Greetings!
 | | Betty Ford |
The mission of the National Association of Mothers' Centers is to create a community of women, who through mutual support and public advocacy, explore, enrich and value the maternal experience. Mothers' Centers empower women to value their work as caregivers and value who they are as women. Betty Ford, who passed away on July 8th, exemplified what it means to be a powerful woman in her own right. She raised four children. She spoke up for women's rights, even when it had a negative impact on her husband's popularity. She demonstrated strength in the face of her personal battle with cancer. She dealt with insecurities and confronted addiction that lead her to create The Betty Ford Center to help others through their addictions. In the prologue to her first autobiography, Betty Ford wrote, "I am an ordinary woman who was called onstage at an extraordinary time. I was no different once I became first lady than I had been before. But through an accident of history, I had become interesting to people." May her life and story continue to inspire many. How has another woman inspired you? Share your stories with us. Best wishes,
Linda Lisi Juergens Executive Director 516 939-MOMS X101

NAMC Welcomes Kate Fineske to its Staff
We are excited to introduce our newest staff member, Kate Fineske. Kate maintains and provides the content to the Mothers Central Blog - the official blog of the National Association of Mothers' Centers. She is also responsible for organizing our National Mothers' Center Leadership Council with the goal of building strong connections to and support for Mothers' Center leadership.
Kate joined the Mothers Center of Greater Toledo in the fall of 2005. As a member of her local chapter, she initially got involved at a leadership level as the Programming Chair at the Toledo, Ohio chapter. She became Facilitator of her chapter and currently still participates in a leadership role as Website and BigTent Chair with the Mothers' Center of Greater Toledo. In 2009, she was a guest webinar presenter discussing unique ways to successfully organize, maintain and pass the torch of leadership roles within the local Mothers' Center Organizations.
Kate has always been the "creative type" - enjoying art, creative writing, and music. She graduated from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio with a Bachelor of Arts and a personalized degree focusing on graphic design, advertising, marketing and communications while also concentrating in music by participating in the university's orchestra and jazz band as a string bassist and pianist.
Kate and her husband have 3 children and 1 very loved (and very patient!) Shitzu dog. To read more about Kate, click here.
Please join us in welcoming Kate to NAMC!

NAMC in the National Flexibility Dialogue
The NAMC was proud to be involved in the final National Dialogue on Workplace Flexibility event that was hosted by the Women's Bureau of the Dept. of Labor on June 30th at City University of New York in Manhattan. This session was the last of ten regional events that followed the first forum hosted by the White House. A diverse group of nearly 200 attended the discussion on flexibility challenges and solutions for professional workers. Women's Bureau Director Sara Manzano-Díaz, who spoke at the conference, stressed that workplace flexibility is both a family and economic issue. NAMC's Executive Director, Linda Lisi Juergens, assisted in a breakout session focused on employees' perspective, and the NAMC helped identify employers, work/life experts and other advocates who also attended.

'Fat Talk' Amid Obesity: Dianne Neumark-Sztainer
Article from Daughters.com from New Moon
Today's teenage girls struggle with body image issues and unhealthy eating habits that can lead to health problems ranging from anorexia to obesity. It is difficult to know how to support our daughters in developing a healthy life style with respect to food, especially if we struggle a bit ourselves. Our beliefs, the messages girls receive and the media often conspire to put our daughters on the defensive around food that leads to some form of dysfunctional eating.
In this article, Diane Neumark-Sztainer, a mom of four and a public health professor at the University of Minnesota, provides insights and very sage advice on what parents can do to support their daughters in developing healthy eating habits.

Mother and Child Research Project
In support of research that will be helpful to mothers and families, the NAMC is sharing this research study from the University of Maryland. If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, contact the researcher directly.
Dear Parents,
I am looking for mothers and their 6-7 year old children to participate in my dissertation study on how mothers and their children respond to social and emotional experiences. The study involves a two hour visit to the Maryland Child & Family Development Lab on the University of Maryland's campus, and parking is free during the visit. During the visit, we will use small sensors to record the mother's and child's reactions to different social and emotional tasks, including creating stories from word sets, watching some short picture presentations, playing a computer game, and answering some questions. At the end of the visit, mothers receive a picture of her and her child at the lab and children receive a certificate of participation.
If you are a mother of a 6-7 year old child and you are interested in participating or would like more information about the study, please email Brandi Stupica, call her at 301-405-0009, or check out the lab's website www.cassidylab.org.
Thank you! Brandi Stupica
