As we are welcoming a new year here in America there is an ongoing struggle for survival in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.

On December 16, a huge tropical storm ravaged the island cities, leaving more than 376,000 people displaced by the storm and almost 55,000 huddled in crowded makeshift evacuation centers, according to the disaster council of the Philippines.

On Christmas day, Rod heard from Pastor Chris Florita, whom he had met in 1998 while developing pastor's conferences in Cagayan de Oro City. Pastor Chris was desperate to find help and began contacting friends from all over the world to help aid in the relief efforts. Rod immediately sent a financial gift from GeoBound in order to purchase food for 50 families. Here are some of the ongoing struggles Pastor Chris is facing:

As of January 20th, the storm hit the city of Iligan in Mindanao, Philippines. It damaged or destroyed more than 50,000 houses.

  •  Tropical storm Washi hit two major cities, Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in northern Mindanao, and 800 neighboring villages on 16-18 December, triggering large-scale flooding and landslides that affected more than 1 million people. The confirmed death toll reached 1,453 according to the Telegraph News.

Even with such catastrophic circumstances, Pastor Chris continues to serve his church and community with all can he can do.

Here's Pastor Florita's words:

Pastor Rod,

The relief operation will continue until the Local Govt can relocate the evacuees to a permanent place. That will be sometime in March as they (Govt) have promised, and they are not very good in fulfilling promises.

I am more incline of giving them cooking pots, and eating utensils so they will have something to start with. Blankets and mosquito nets will also be a good idea. I am sourcing out for some medicine. We have 7 dead of Leptospirosis, and more are in the Hospital. Diarrhea, Bronchopneumonia, Fever, Sour eyes, Cough, and Skin infections are among the common problems in the Evac center. I am coordinating effort with our Social Welfare, and they are grateful for the Christians' heart to help. We have 2 stages to address this: 1st is the Relief Operation, and the 2nd is the Rehabilitation. The 1st stage will take us about 3-4 months, sustaining them with food, clothing and medicine. The 2nd will be building them a shanty. We are beginning to see some social ill-behavior among the evacuees.

We plan to train and mobilize our workers next week for trauma debriefing... After our church service, we prepared some food for the flood victims at a village called Macanhan. 200 packed lunches were distributed. This is in a village called Baikingon, with some volunteer doctors and nurses, we were able to conduct 7 free medical & dental clinics this week. Hope more help and service to come. This is medical mission we conducted in a village near the port area called Macabalan. We served about 120 patients.

Thanks for keeping us in your Prayers,

Pastor Chris
