Greetings!
Rod never fails to teach his students in the Missions School at Christ For The Nations his motto for missions: always be flexible and fluid. He also teaches there are times when you must press in and contend for the ministry the Lord has given you to do. So, in light of these teaching principles, we'd like to tell you about some very significant events that just took place that changed the dynamics of the mission trip Rod and a group of men were going to take earlier this month. One day before they were to fly down to the Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, a tragic accident took place. Here is part of that news from the Associated Press.
...the airport was closed after a Grupo Taca jet carrying 124 people overshot the runway and slammed into a busy street Friday [May 30. 2008]. The crash left five people dead and dozens injured, including seven Americans, two Canadians and four Europeans. The airport re-opened only to planes carrying 42 people or less because there are questions about the safety of its short runway. larger flights are being re-routed to San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras. As a result, the San Pedro Sula airport was being flooded with passengers, more than 6,000 a day compared to 1,000 before. The accident raised renewed questions about the safety of Toncontin Airport for larger planes. President Manuel Zelaya ways the U.S. Soto Cano air base will be used as a civil airport in two months and will take over larger flights that have gone to Toncontin. The airport's short runway, primitive navigation equipment and neighboring hills make it one of the world's more dangerous international airports. It was built on the Southern edge of hilly Tegucigalpa in 1948 with a runway less than 5,300 feet (1,600 meters) long.
Though they have been delayed, they have rescheduled the trip for June 21-29, 2008. Because of the planning it takes to facilitate these trips, the medical portion of ministry will be re-scheduled for a later time. A smaller team is preparing to continue with the plan to build a church. Please contend with us in prayer for this trip. We value your prayer support as we remain focused on the goal!
Philippians 3:12-14 (The Message Translation) "I'm not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am will on my way, reaching our for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don't get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I've got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward - to Jesus. I'm off and running and I'm not turning back."
Remaining Flexible and Fluid!
Celeste
