Hereford Hardware and Supply
Three things in life are unavoidable; Death, taxes....and home repairs. David Smalts can't help you avoid the grave or taxes, but he can help make your home repairs and projects a little easier. After working in the hardware business for 38 years, David knew that he had the industry knowledge and experience to provide the growing town of Hereford with a hardware store that met locals' needs and kept their money local. In late 2010 he opened Hereford Hardware and Supply. The SBDC was introduced to David through his banker and we were able to help him complete his financing package. He was able to take advantage of the EDP Plus grant program, a little publicized matching grant for small businesses that's funded at the beginning of each year and can help offset costs for a building, machinery and equipment as well as closing costs. Thanks to his hands-on approach and desire to know his customers, he's stocked the store with items that have meant a solution to most home problems customers initially walk in with. Hereford area residents no longer have to make the drive to Amarillo to buy from a big box supplier, David has brought them what they need to take care of most projects.David's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to be prepared, patient and ready for hard work and he certainly does business by those words. He doesn't spend his days in a cushy back office, instead, he's up front running a register, cutting custom lumber for customers and answering the phone all while keeping up with inventory, processing payroll and a host of other tasks that small business owners face each day.
