Thompson's Gift Shop
Thompson's China & Gifts

A landmark in retail that's been in business for over 100 years has been transformed into one of Canyon's most visited downtown shops. What began as hardware store in 1908 has seen many transitions over the last century that included furniture, windmills and even funeral directors, but always kept the famous Thompson's name. Today, Thompson's has morphed into its present day status as a gift shop and remains a landmark for locals who shop there year round and visitors who flock to Canyon's historic square every summer.

Melissa Wright began working part-time at Thompson's in 2000. When the previous owners who had owned the gift shop since 1988 decided it was time to sell, Melissa was an obvious choice to take over the next phase of the business' rich history. She and her husband Jason purchased the business in January of this year and after completing extensive renovations that brought back much of the store's original features, they reopened on March 7th.

Thompson's offers a variety of items from handbags, jewelry, home decor, collegiate items and candles as well as tuxedo rentals and bridal and baby registries. Melissa has made sure she stocks the store with items totally new to the area and if you check in on Facebook you'll receive an additional 10% off of your purchase!

Holiday Marketing Tips

Christmas is right around the corner, but it's not too late to get the word out about your business this season. Here are a few tips for easy promotions that almost any business can offer:

  • For every $50 spent, donate $5 to the charity of your customer's choice (provide a list of options).
  • Give a 10% discount for each customer who checks in on Facebook.
  • If you have mailing list of your best customers, send out coupons with a special thank you message.
  • Offer free signature gift wrap with any purchase (think men who want to give a beautifully wrapped gift!).
  • Give customers a reason to stop at your store: free apple cider, cookies or coloring kits for weary kids.
  • Offer a 15% discount for using your store's reusable shopping bag. Be sure to have plenty on-hand to sell.

If you have holiday marketing tip you'd like to share with everyone, reply to this email and let me know what it is as well as if your business has Facebook and Twitter pages. I'll pass your tips on via Facebook and Twitter so other readers can benefit as well!
