Although it can't be said that the Amarillo area has a shortage of Asian cuisine restaurants, the father and son team of Mike and Colby Newman knew that their business venture was a unique one. They recently opened The Happy Plum and 34th and Bell in Amarillo and they've been busy ever since with a great deal of the credit going to their fresh take on Asian cuisine. This isn't the usual fried food you're used to! Everything they make is prepared fresh in the small drive through restaurant and the rich taste is thanks to their commitment to using fresh ingredients.  

 

Colby and Mike worked with Rick Palmer to tweak their business plan and complete financial projections as well as compile research on the restaurant industry in Amarillo. Many of the staff from our office have stopped by to grab dinner at The Happy Plum and we give Colby two thumbs up for the great food, generous portions and quick service (their plum puffs and egg rolls are favorites!).   

 

Since The Happy Plus is located just down the street from Amarillo High, they offer a discount for students! Once they're settled in their current location, Mike and Colby have plans to open additional locations across Amarillo. We hope to see more of this fresh food and convenient drive-thru combination from them soon.

32 Low Cost Promotion Ideas

This month's feature is a blast from the past! We came across this article while digging through some old files and even though it was probably written in the 90's, most of the information still applies today (minus the phone book and fax tips we omitted!). 

 

Written by Coco Duckworth of Encourage Consulting and the late Don Taylor, former Director of the WT SBDC, below are some of their best promotion tips, but please read the full list of tips here (PDF).     

   

1. Develop a mailing list of your customers. By having an accurate mailing list you'll open doors to all sorts of marketing possibilities.  

 

2. Start a frequent buyer program. Prizes for frequent buyers may be discounts of their next purchase free. This helps build loyalty.

 

3. Forward articles of interest to customers/prospects. Taking the time to share knowledge shows your thoughtfulness as well as your understanding of your customer's needs.

 

4. Send out a quality newsletter on a regular basis. It's a prime vehicle to share case studies, testimonials, new product information and toot your own horn regarding ......

New Contracting Procurement Center
We are very pleased to announce that WTA&M University has been awarded a grant to operate a new Contract Procurement Center for the Texas Panhandle! What does this mean for you?

 

We will be the point of contact for government and taxing entities needing Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) suppliers, contractors and subcontractors. If you are a minority/woman/veteran owned business or contractor seeking to hire one of these HUB owned businesses, the CPC can assist you!

Our emphasis will be on locating, training, certifying and aiding all Historically Underutilized Businesses, including minority owned businesses, women owned businesses, service disabled veteran owned businesses, veteran owned businesses, and HUBzone located businesses.

In 2010, Texas alone awarded $987 MILLION in contracts to companies certified as Historically Underutilized Businesses. There's a good chance your business may qualify for these contracts.
