Krystal O'Mara - ReMain Eco Design

A passion for design and sustainable living led Krystal O'Mara to begin a business that has taken off in ways she never imagined.

ReMain Eco Design and Consulting was founded in 2010. Krystal saw the potential for life in old discarded bicycles and through trial and error, taught herself how to shape and weld these pieces into art that double as functional pieces of furniture and decor. Her upcycling talents have garnered national attention and she was recently featured in the Entrepreneur Magazine's August issue!

Julie Attebury worked with Krystal to assist her with marketing efforts and inventory. After her magazine piece was published, interest in Krystal's products exploded and she's putting the inventory tactics she and Julie discussed to good use to keep pace with orders. Items listed on her website are generally available for immediate shipping, but she takes custom orders as well for many different designs and items besides her signature tables and light fixtures.

In addition to her design services, she also dabbles in artwork, some of which is on display at Butler's Martini Bar on Polk Street. She also offers consulting services that go hand-in-hand with her eco friendly designs. Krystal can help families as well as businesses who want to go green and her services can not only benefit the surrounding environment, but can save clients money through saved energy costs and less waste.

Krystal's work was recently on display in St. Louis at the prestigious FORM Contemporary Design Show. The annual show is a mecca for contemporary art admirers from across the nation and her work was featured alongside some of the world's most innovative designers. You don't have to travel all the way to St. Louis to view her designs. In addition to artwork displayed at Butler's, you can view other pieces in Amarillo at the Ground Cafe in the Chase Tower and the Gray is Grey gallery at 15th/Lipscomb.

Although Krystal says demand for her designs and consulting has steadily increased in recent months, she wisely anticipated and planned for the demand and expects continued growth in the future as upcycling and going green become increasingly important parts of our modern lives.

10 Tips for Marketing Your Business With Daily Deal Sites

Daily deal sites like Groupon and Living Social have recently exploded in popularity among small business owners. These sites give business owners the ability to offer a coupon for their services or products to the public at a one day discount of generally at least 50%.

Groupon, Living Social and Amarillo Daily Deals are three of the most used here in the Texas Panhandle. These sites all accept submissions for a wide variety of products and services. Consider these 10 tips before jumping in on the craze:

1. Find the right site. Daily deal sites are location-specific, so look for sites that promote businesses in your area. In addition to the big names, there are niche sites targeting specific cities or industries. Search online for sites or visit daily deal aggregator Yipit.com.

2. Join in. Subscribe to the daily deal sites you're considering so you see what types of deals they offer and what kinds of businesses participate.

3. Investigate site demographics. Like any marketing venue, daily deal sites maintain data about customer demographics. Ask for information about the typical customer profile to see if the site's audience matches your target market.

4. Learn how it works. Customers sign up for daily email offers to buy vouchers for products or services at discounts of 50 to 90 percent. Vouchers can be purchased for a limited time (typically 24 to 72 hours) and may include a social element (such as requiring a certain number of people to buy). Customers must redeem the voucher within a set time frame.

5. Apply to be included. You have to apply for inclusion on daily deal sites. Visit each site you're interested in, and fill out the application form. For popular sites or those with many businesses like yours, there may be a wait.

6. Read the contract. Understand the agreement you're entering into with a daily deal site, including such factors as when you will get paid and how the deal site is paid.

7. Figure out financials. Typically, daily deal sites receive a percentage of the sales-sometimes 50 percent or more. Calculate whether you will earn enough to justify participating, and whether you are financially prepared to fulfill all the vouchers you sell.

8. Be prepared. Daily deals can trigger overwhelming demand, so be sure your business has enough staff to keep everyone happy and enough product to fulfill orders. The deal site's staff can suggest ways to manage demand, such as extending the deadline for using vouchers or capping the number sold.

9. Provide stellar service. Many customers who buy your deal will be new to your business. Make a good first impression so you can turn them into repeat customers.

10. Follow up. To maximize your deal, encourage new customers to connect with you on Facebook or Twitter. Get email addresses and send them special offers. Give them discounts or vouchers for their next visit. Do whatever you can to keep them coming back.

Grant Opportunities

Although grants for businesses are few and far between, there are a couple of good opportunities available right now.

Enterprize Challenge

Funded by the Amarillo EDC and administered by the WTAMU Enterprize Center, the Enterprize Challenge is one of the best grants available to Amarillo area businesses. $500,000 total is available to recipients who may receive up to $100,000 each. Learn more about the qualifications and deadlines to enter.

Value Added Producer Grant Program

A total of $37 million in grants is currently available through this grant program through the USDA. Planning and working capital grants are available to commodity producers who can show that they'll increase their revenue through "value added" activities. A maximum grant of $100,000 can be awarded for planning and $300,000 for working capital. These are matching grants so recipients must be able to match the amount requested from the USDA. Visit westartrade.com to learn more about this program or contact Cindy Thyfault at cindy@westartrade.com.

Tips & Tricks

Is your business a non-profit 501(c)(3) looking to buy new software? Check out TechSoup.org before paying retail prices. Eligible non-profits (take their quick eligibility quiz) can purchase donated and discounted software from them at deeply discounted prices.
