The Shoe Doctor

The Shoe Doctor
Bobby Jones, The Shoe Doctor

The Shoe Doctor is Amarillo's newest spot for all of your shoe upkeep.

Proprietor Bobby Jones is located in the lower level of the Happy State Bank building at 7th & Taylor just across from the SBDC. Monday through Friday he's hard at work offering his talents for those who work in the building as well as

the many who just happen to be passing through. Since opening for business just a few weeks ago, Bobby's services have steadily become more in demand and he stays busy most days putting a shine on once dull shoes.

Happy State Bank recently located an antique shoe shine stand and had it shipped from Michigan just for Bobby. When he's not busy putting a shine on the shoes and boots that have been dropped off for an afternoon polish, Bobby stays busy with clients who stop by for a few minutes of relaxation with a shoe shine and to sit in the comfortable plush vintage seats of the stand.

Rick Palmer at the SBDC worked with Bobby to complete his business plan and crunch the numbers to give him the best chance of being profitable. Bobby's determination and knowledge of the business made it easy to complete a set of projections that both he and Rick felt were accurate.

With his many years of experience, Bobby has seen that this inexpensive upkeep not only improves the appearance of shoes, but lengthens their life, saving you money in the long run. Shoe shines are $6 and boots are $7. Bobby invites you to stop by and relax while he puts life back into your shoes, or when your schedule is too hectic to stop, drop them off and they'll be ready when you return.

Awards Reception

What do an immigrant from South Africa, a fired physical therapist and an 84 year old Amarillo cheerleader have in common? Each has been awarded prestigious recognition from the Small Business Administration's Lubbock District Office.

The West Texas A&M University Small Business Development Center is hosting a reception honoring these award winners.

The reception will be held Thursday, July 14th from 5-7pm at Bar Z Winery, 19290 FM 1541 (Washington just north of Hunsley Rd.) and is open to all who wish to congratulate the winners. It includes hors d'oeuvre and locally bottled wine from Bar Z Winery.

Honorees are:

  • Dirk van Reenen of Expio Consulting and Caprock Auctions, Young Entrepreneur of the Year
  • Karen Day of Specialized Therapy Services, Small Business Person of the Year
  • Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, Financial Services Champion
  • Pantex, Eisenhower Award (additional recognition will be given from the SBA)
Mileage Reimbursement Change

Does your business reimburse employees based on the IRS's standard mileage rates? Rising gas prices have prompted the IRS to issue a mid-year increase from 51¢ per mile to 55.5¢ per mile beginning July 1st. Don't forget to update your reimbursement forms!

Did You Know?

The price of a gigabyte of storage has dropped dramatically over the last 30 years.

YEAR - Price of a Gigabyte

1981 - $300,000

1987 - $50,000

1990 - $10,000

1994 - $1000

1997 - $100

2000 - $10

2004 - $1

2010 - $0.10

In 1981 it would have cost $2.4 million for an 8GB flash drive that we commonly carry today!
