Eva Munoz is a long time business owner starting La Tapatia in 1996 at the T-Anchor flea market along with help from her sister Silvia Rendon. It only took two short years for her business to increase to the point that she needed her own store and she did just that, moving her goods to a store that she still maintains on Grand Street.

Her target market is the Hispanic community who want personalized items for wedding and quinceaneras. She sells items individually as well as event packages and all of the personalization on her items, whether it's napkins or photo albums, is done in-house.

The sisters regularly travel to set-up memorable events for clients in the Texas Panhandle and have even traveled as far as New Mexico.

Eva originally came to the SBDC in 2008 and met with David Dickerson to get some help with bookkeeping. In 2009 she decided to enter the Enterprize Challenge grant competition and PJ Pronger spent time with her helping with a business plan, financial projections and the presentation for the judges. Eva and Silvia gave a remarkable presentation and La Tapatia was awarded $75,000 in the competition which Eva used to purchase additional equipment to better serve her clients and to take her business online.

She now has a beautiful website and has expanded her business nationwide. If you're in the market for a more personal experience when shopping for your event, give Eva and Silvia a call!

The Entrepreneurial Mindset
by: Gina Woodward, WT SBDC

I've just spent the morning reading through Gary Hoover's book Hoover's Vision and am in awe of his intuitive and down-to-earth view of successful business practices.

I'd like to share with you a few excerpts from the book about his insights on entrepreneurial thinking.

Where you find institutions, you find rules and regulations printed up and widely distributed. By contrast, at the entrepreneurial end of the scale, you find power and initiative distributed well down into the organization.

What's more important: entrepreneurship or industry?
  • Paying people based on quality of service or years of service?
  • Being efficient and conserving resources or developing and following procedures?
  • Trying new things and being proud of failure, or avoiding embarrassments and mistakes?
  • Serving the customer or following the rules?
  • Doing your best or meeting minimum standards?

If a manager with an institutional mindset sees a mosquito in his office, he will fill out a form (in triplicate) to start the process of hiring a pest-control company. A request for bids will be sent out to the leading exterminators, and - with luck - someone will be on the job with mosquito spray six months down the road. If a manager with an entrepreneurial mindset sees a mosquito in his office, he runs to the corner store and gets a can of Raid.

Intriguing thoughts from a man always well ahead of his time.

Please read the column to the left to learn more about Mr. Hoover and how you can RSVP for his two upcoming events in Amarillo this month.
