Success Story
True Texas Designs
 April McDaniel
When opportunity knocked on the door April McDaniel was eager to accept the invitation. Named the 2009 Woman of the Year by the Canyon Chamber of Commerce, April has been involved with fostering businesses in the area for the last six years and knew that business ownership was for her.
When she came to the SBDC she had a jump start on the process and had already written her business plan and leased space on the historic square in Canyon to house the business. The SBDC was able to help her make some decisions about which suppliers were best for her and help her put together a sound set of financial projections.
April features a variety of unique rustic Texas items from furniture to picture frames. It's that time of the year when Christmas shopping is upon us and it's a prime time to stop by and pick up some True Texas Designs for the loved ones on your shopping list!

It's that time of the year again. Time for holiday open houses and Christmas shopping. It's also that time to ask yourself "what can I do to increase my holiday sales?" Here are two of my best tips for local businesses.
1. Offer shoppers something unique. Unique can be everything from an item to an experience. I borrow this tip from my own mother. She catered an area Christmas open house and made a very unique cookie that was easy to spot. When shoppers would leave the store with their cookie they would be approached by other shoppers asking where to get one. Where do you think those shoppers ended up? They went to the store seeking one of the famous cookies and many times left with purchases in tow.
Yes, something as simple as a cookie can increase your sales!
2. Send a holiday email E-mail marketing to an in-house list of customers is widely accepted as being one of the most effective means of marketing.
It's an inexpensive way to contact your customers and now is the time to offer coupons and let them know about holiday specials.
Using an email service like Constant Contact, iContact or MailChimp is the easiest way to go. They offer customizable templates and you can easily monitor important stats like open rates and click throughs. Check out the coupon below for a 25% discount on Constant Contact.
So, does e-mail marketing really work? You're reading this newsletter aren't you!
