Success Story
Bar Z Winery
 Monty Dixon
Monty and his wife Amber originally contacted the SBDC in 2004 when they decided it was time to make their wine making hobby a lifestyle. The SBDC was able to assist them with a business plan and financing for a new building along with information and contacts regarding the Texas wine industry.
Monty is primarily responsible for running the winery and has been making wine since the 70's. He's developed a taste for the best and knows what it takes to make superior Texas wine.
The Dixon's had plans to move the winery from its original location in Morse to Amarillo and expand to offer additional varieties of wine as well as event hosting. After selecting a location and building a state of the art new building, they opened in Amarillo in early 2007. The facility houses not only the wine and a laboratory, but has a venue for events with a spectacular canyon view.

I've written about this before, but one of the most common questions we get at the SBDC is regarding permits and licensing. Texas is one of the easiest states to open and operate a business in because the state and local agencies generally requires few permits for most businesses.
I recently came across a website that does a great job narrowing down requirements for your business based on location and business type. Business.gov maintains a list of licenses and permits that's searchable by zip code and free to access. Searching before opening your business will bring up an inclusive list of requirements for everything from tax registration and occupational permits to workplace poster requirements. Your business and you personally can receive large fines for not following the required guidelines listed. When in doubt, check a website like Business.gov or give the SBDC a call. We're here to help and can guide you in the right direction to help your business succeed! |
