Success Story Beatnik
James Lloyd
James came to the SBDC with experience owning a hookah bar and organic medicinal herb business in California. He's originally from the Panhandle and wanted to return to his roots. His dream was to open a business like no other in Amarillo, offering folk music and organic foods.
Through trial and error, he's perfected the art of creating new dishes, all of them using plants and herbs he grows himself. He prides himself on offering dishes that "fill the stomach and soothe the mind."
James has an eye for business and located an empty taxidermy storefront that he converted into the restaurant. He kept costs low by using many of the existing appliances and doing most of the renovations on his own.
If you're in the area we encourage you to stop by to enjoy some of James' music and try a dish or two. It's an out of this world experience and you won't be disappointed!

Are you required to have a business license? by: Gina Woodward, WT SBDC
It's one of the most commonly asked questions we get at the SBDC. If you're in the Amarillo area and most of the surrounding cities, the short answer is no.
Texas is one of the most small business friendly states in the U.S. and there is no general business license required by the State. There are a scattered few local cities that have business license statues, but the Amarillo & Canyon area requires no business license.
Even though no general license is required, there are some industries that are required to have licensing specific to the work they do. For example, businesses that work in food preparation, construction or health services will have to obtain specific licensing before they can begin operating.
All places of business that are open to the public are required to have an Occupancy Permit posted. These permits can be obtained from the local Fire Marshal's office and generally require an inspection by one of their employees.
If you have any questions about whether or not your business needs to be licensed, check out TexasOnline.com to view a complete list of state licenses sorted by industry. |
