Speaking Roses of Amarillo
  Rhonda Haywood
"If you can imagine it, we can print it on a rose."

Rhonda owns one of Amarillo's most original floral services! only a few short months later!
She came to the SBDC in December asking for assistance in purchasing the new business. Speaking Roses is a franchise that prints words and pictures on roses to express that special sentiment.  The SBDC gave her guidance on determining a legal structure, state permits, and getting her tax ID number.

All of the hard work put into setting up the business paid off because it was up and running only a few short months later!

Speaking Roses of Amarillo will have a booth at the Business Connection on May 5th at the Amarillo Civic Center where there will be many examples of Rhonda's work on display. Of course, roses always make a great Mother's Day present so contact Rhonda to order!

5 Strategies to Grow Your Business for FREE!
By: Todd Dean

1. Media is your friend - by positioning yourself as an expert in your community, you will be able to garner media attention for free well in excess of what you could afford to buy. As you become known as THE expert in town, customers will seek you out.

2. Team up - stop looking at everyone as the competition and find other businesses that complement yours. By providing clients a wider range of services, you will garner a larger share of the market. If you are a florist, team up with a bridal shop and offer package deals. If you own a car repair shop, team up with a car wash and offer value added for your customers.

3. Selectively Expand - the services you offer, and focus on those that bring in higher revenue or add perceived value for your customers. If you own a women's dress shop, consider adding a vendor who is a make up artist. If you own a graphic design business, add photography or copywriting.

4. Rebrand Your Business - this can help if you are not growing or growing slower than you would like. Review your company image and think of how you can change that image in the mind of consumers. If you own a pest control company, create a new logo that catches the eye and conveys the benefits of what you do. When someone hears your name they should see dead bugs!

5. Reinvest in You and Your Business - by continuing to improve your knowledge and acquire the tools to keep your business on the cutting edge, you can make more profit over the life of your business. For example, if you have resisted the idea of using the internet to attract more customers, you have removed yourself from the competition no matter what type of business you have.

Learn about these strategies and much more at
Todd Dean's seminar at the WT SBDC on May 21st!

America's Weirdest Businesses
By: Inc. Magazine Staff

1. Afterlife Telegrams - New Athens, Illinois
Service for contacting the dead. Terminally ill patients memorize messages and deliver them when opportunity permits.

2. Prairie Tumbleweed Farm - Garden City, Kansas
A large tumbleweed goes for $25, which sounds about right.

3. Season Shot - Bloomington, Minnesota
It's ammunition and a taste sensation in one! Why fill tonight's dinner with buckshot when you can shoot it with a biodegradable pellet packed with lemon pepper, honey mustard, and other yummy flavors?

4. SomethingStore - Huntington, New York
Pay $10, and it will ship you something. No telling what.

5. You've Been Left Behind - Harwich, Massachusetts Subscribers create e-mail messages for loved ones ineligible for the rapture. We note the founders' confidence that at the End of Days, the Internet will be up and running.

Our favorite websites this month....

Can we read Dutch? No. Are they selling anything? We think. Do we like their website. Yes!

Just for Small Business blog
Short and sweet. This blog has lots of information business owners need to know, but all the fluff has been taken out and it gets straight to the point.

Happiness Factory
Coke's website is one of the most well designed flash websites online. They use clever games to keep us...err, other people who play at work...occupied while encouraging players to drink what else, Coke, to keep them energized. Very clever marketing!
A bit of patience is required for the site to load, but it's well worth the wait.
