Happy Holidays From Leadership Huntington!
"Tis a season of deep giving and reflection. For us at Leadership it is an opportunity to acknowledge the distinct privilege we have to be associated with so many who strive for success in all aspects of life -- personally, professionally and in their community. We are grateful for all who come at this world with open minds and hearts, ready to assume responsibility as members of their community and to commit to a life of continual learning and engagement.
The length that people in our network go to are inspiring and deeply meaningful. When we hear their stories of giving and receiving, they touch us professionally, as a community and often on deeply personal levels. We are exceptionally grateful to have people like this in our community, honor your many contributions, and hope you are enjoying a most joyous Holiday Season.
Thank you for all you do. We wish you all a New Year filled with health, prosperity and happiness for you and all you care for.

Thank you Matthew Spirn (Class of 2010) and the Northport Tasting Room
More than a few times we have shared a laugh, heard a great story, or made a new friend at the Northport Tasting Room. It has been the place for socials, the site of meetings, and even served as the unofficial "Clubhouse" of the Class of 2010. We are ever grateful to the establishment's proprietor, Matt Spirn for his insights, his wit, and his warm generosity. His contribution to Leadership has been substantial. We offer our humble thanks.

Pilar Moya-Mancera Inspires Young Leaders
We were recently moved to hear of Pilar Moya-Mancera (Class of 2010) bringing three high school freshmen -- future community leaders! -- to the December 10th "Ready to Lead" (R2L) Program put together by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI). It is our understanding that most of those engaged come through their high school but Pilar, motivated by the program's promise, took individual initiative to make sure that kids she cared about were involved.
The program motivates Latino high school students to complete high school, empowers them to serve and lead in their communities, and instills the belief that a college education is achievable. What she found particularly helpful in engaging her young charges was the program's use of well-known artists who shared poignant stories of their own creative and persistent efforts to achieve success. She also deeply appreciates the CHCI's commitment to staying with these kids over the long term -- through high school, college and into career placement.
We sure appreciate her!
Programs interested in learning more about the R2L Program other CHCI activities should contact Pamela Cervera, CHCI High School Programs Specialist at pcervera@chci.org or (202) 548-8780.

Jon Ten Haagen Wants Wise Investments, Both in Your Life and in Our Waterways Long-time friend of Leadership, Jon Ten Haagen, a Registered Investment Advisor, Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Retirement Planning Consultant (RPC) established Ten Haagen Financial Group in 1993. He lectures extensively, has been featured in many prominent publications and can often be seen on News 12. His primary professional mission is to go beyond the sale of products to in-depth consultation regarding how to make wise investments in all aspects of a client's financial life.
Jon has been deeply active in the Huntington Chamber of Commerce for many years and serves as the Commodore of the Greater Huntington Council of Yacht and Boating Clubs, which acts as a liaison between the area's 5400 boating families and elected officials. It helps support the Huntington Light House and orchestrates the boating parade that we featured last Thanksgiving as part of our overall appreciation of the Chamber's community-oriented approach to the holiday shopping season.
The most important issue to Jon, however, is getting our community and its elected officials to understand and address water quality. Given half a chance, Jon will explain the need for dredging in Northport Harbor and talk at length about the severe and highly toxic Red-Tide that threatens prized natural resources and our quality of life. The Red Tide is caused by an extreme imbalance of Nitrogen in the system, which the Boating Council believes must be addressed by repairing and upgrading the Northport's sewage treatment system. A wise investment here, he suggests, will yield great returns for us all.

Dolan Center Update: Challenges and Hard Choices, Yes, but Mostly Hope and Gratitude
Many have been following the challenges faced by the Dolan Family Health Center in 2011. We are pleased to cap off the year with this latest update provided by Dolan Center Administrator Terence Smith:
FY 2011 was the busiest and most tumultuous in the 16 year history of the Dolan Family Health Center. As increasing numbers of uninsured Huntington area residents sought access to affordable healthcare at the Dolan Family Health Center, the outgoing Suffolk County Executive repeatedly targeted Huntington's health center for elimination of public funds.
Almost daily, patients inquired about how long their center would remain open, and "when should I transfer my records to another doctor." The staff of the Center who provide quality healthcare to the community, did so while living with the possibility of unemployment for much of the year.
During this time, the community responded to financial threats to the Dolan Center with advocacy: concerned citizens wrote letters; not-for-profit leaders made calls to elected officials; and elected officials repeatedly stated to the leadership of Suffolk County that program-sustaining funding must be found for our community's health center. In the end the Suffolk County Legislature united to re-work the County Executive's proposed budget and fair and reasonable funding for all health centers that serve Suffolk's working poor and uninsured, including the Dolan Family Health Center, was assured.
For 2012, there are enormous financial challenges facing our County, however, things may be looking a little brighter for the Dolan Family Health Center and those who depend on us.
- A new County Executive takes office on Jan 1. He has stated that he knows the value of health centers to Suffolk's healthcare safety network and has pledged that he will maintain it.
- Federal and state governments are increasingly identifying funding opportunities that help to expand the capacity for providers of affordable primary care.
- The Dolan Center has been designated as a desirable future site for expanded programs in academic medicine.
- The widespread community advocacy of 2011 on behalf of the Dolan Center made an impact on Suffolk County healthcare decision-makers who better understand that all communities have a right to fair and equitable public funding for care of their uninsured residents.
- Suffolk County policy makers have become increasingly aware of the "best practices" in place at the Dolan Family Health Center and our successes may be increasingly emulated in other communities.
- As painful as it was to implement, the Dolan Center did what every other business in Huntington has had to do to remain viable, we reduced costs, we increased revenue and efficiency, and we positioned our Center to be more productive with fewer resources.
We at Leadership Huntington have appreciated diverse feedback on this issue, and the community initiative it has inspired. One of the most prominent has been Danny Schrafel of the Long Islander's 'Betty's Dream' campaign. Others -- whether contributing time and money, coming to meetings, engaging in thoughtful discussion or even applying the information elsewhere -- are also critical. We love learning what grads and others do to address issues they care for. Please feel free to share your news by emailing us at info@leadershiphuntington.org. Thanks!!!
