"First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do. -- Epictetus

Blue Sea

Thank You, Blue Sea Development Company!

Les Bluestone has been involved in the real estate development and construction industry for over three decades, focusing almost exclusively on residential development in the New York City area.  Since forming Blue Sea Development Company in 1999, he and his partner have dedicated themselves to the development of green and sustainable affordable housing. As a part of this commitment, the Blue Sea Development Company developed the first affordable Energy Star certified homes in New York State (Sunflower Way 2001), the first affordable LEED Silver homes in New York State (Morrisania Homes 2007), and the first affordable LEED Platinum multifamily building in New York State (The Eltona 2009).

The list goes on...even their website is under construction!...but what we really want to focus on is what they've done helping develop Leadership Huntington. Personally, professionally, the Bluestone Family and Blue Sea Development have offered critical support to our operations, to our tuition fund, to helping Leadership have a visible presence at events and to encouraging us to share our work regionally and nationally. We are not the only ones to benefit from their generosity and community commitment. The support is critical and we are grateful. Thanks!

Increase Your Voting Prowess by Coming Out to Meet The Candidates on November 3rd!
There are few resources that fully cover the platforms and practices of local elected officials. This is by no means because these elections are meaningless. Rather, we think it's because as citizens, we can and should be observing, questioning, and engaging with them regularly. This is where government starts. These folks directly effect our lives in more ways than many understand, This is where we, as individuals, have the greatest impact.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, volunteer organization working to promote political responsibility through the informed, active participation of citizens in government. Leadership is proud to work with them as a cosponsor of the Huntington arm of the LWV's upcoming "Meet The Candidates Night":

Calling All Graduates: Develop, Connect & Engage with Leadership!!!
As Leadership prepares to celebrate 16 years of experiential training and fellowship in the Town of Huntington, we want to hear from you -- you who have come through our program, and who have continually supported it and helped shaped
it's ever evolving form.

Tell us! What impact has the Leadership program had on your life, on your business, in your community? What would you expect from membership, and what you are able to give to make that possible? Can you help grow our facebook presence, our newsletter reach, the strength of our connections between one another? We want to earn your financial support and otherwise strengthen our capacity through your valued consultation and volunteer pride. Mostly, we want to know -- What are you into these days? How can we work together to better serve you and your community?

Leadership is a somewhat deeper-than-the-average network. We like to think that the investment it takes to become one of our graduates means that our numbers include better-than-the-average people. Heaven knows seeing you folks around, involved in so many different efforts, and aware on so many higher levels makes us  deeply proud to be associated with our graduates. We look in these newsletters to share a little bit of what we're experiencing, and to invite you to contribute something more.

So reach out, call us, email info@leadershiphuntington.org, come to our socials, and let us know what's new, what you're involved in, what's important, what's possible. Our mission is centered on supporting the good work of ordinary people who act as extraordinary citizens. This means you. Thanks.
Jim Ryan  Jim Ryan Talks

Profile in Leadership: Jim Ryan
Prior to joining Leadership, Jim Ryan began laying groundwork on which to build a dream business of encouraging people to open their eyes to the possibilities inherent within.
In 2000, he began serving as a counselor with the Diocese of Rockville Center Prison Ministry. He still serves, helping inmates work through their challenges and identify opportunities for a better life.

When Jim Ryan, Class of 2002, came to present at a Class of 2010 Skills Workshop, he brought proof that he, too, has been inspired -- by Leadership! In that workshop, Jim shared his personal story as an alumni who was inspired by the curriculum to set goals and "follow his bliss," expanding this motivational work to the general public. After all these years, he still uses those goals (pictured above) to encourage clients to seek out and live their own passion.

Jim now serves anyone seeking to open their eyes to opportunities, harness their inherent goodness, and lead a happier more productive life. Check out his website, www.jimryantalks.com, sign up for his short, sweet "A-Ha Moments," and consider the possibilities! His YouTube videos have a way of being shared, and his books have helped more than one Leadership Grad navigate challenging times. He offers motivational keynote presentations, and invites you to join his "Inner Circle." Contact Jim to find out about a special offer -- priced for any ability -- available just for you!

"An empowering and encouraging experience." "Your combination of humor and sincerity made this workshop" -- Theresa Leuffen, Director, Brookhaven Women's Services
 Pinks and the Yacs

Profile in Leadership: Prafulba "Pinky" Vaghela
When Pinky, Class of 2012, invited us to join the Indian community at the Suffolk County celebration of  Diwali, the "Festival of Lights," she didn't tell us that she was one of the five distinguished honorees!

It was a privilege to learn about the diversity within the Indian community -- including how different regions explain the significance of Diwali, a five day celebration that prays for success in business, strength against inner demons, intellectual, social financial, and spiritual wealth, and that honors new beginnings and brings families together. We were delighted with the traditional dances and delicious food, and were inspired by the significant accomplishments of the community members recognized.

For her part, Prafulba ("Pinky" for short) was honored for her work with local youth. These young people she mentors named themselves "The YACS" and designed their own logo. Inspired by her conviction that they can do anything they want for the community, they help businesses and organizations island-wide. Pinky offers a college financial aid seminar, and advises students on their responsibility to mold themselves into well-rounded individuals. She is a proud member of the Leadership Class of 2012, on the membership committee of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, volunteers at Island Harvest and for EMS Services, and is working to bring NIH research to Long Island. Back home in India, she is a mountain climber. The book she is writing, "Rajput History of India," will benefit victims of domestic violence, raising funds to help educate women to make a better living on their own and not suffer due to lack of education or skill.
 Irene Moore

Profile in Leadership: Irene Moore
Irene Moore, Class of 2010 was recently honored at the Town of Huntington's 10th Anniversary of Women's Networking Day & Awards Ceremony. More than 400 people attended the Oct. 26 event, run under the auspices of the Town's Division of Women's Services, which this year carried the theme "...And Finally YOU! Ultimate Living," and focused on enhancing Health and Well Being in daily lives. The event, held at Larkfield Manor, included 50 informational booths, where experts provided information, advice and demonstrations on a range of topics. The others honored included Michele Martines, Marian Layer, Marie L. Rouse and Barbara Samuells.

As chair of the Town's African American Historic Designation Council, Irene Moore is a retired administrator at Medgar Evers College, from which she graduated (she also received a master's degree from Baruch College) and currently serves on the board of directors of its alumni association. She is also Second Vice President/Program Director of the NAACP's Huntington Branch, a former member of the Highview at Huntington board of directors and a charter member of Friends of the Huntington Train Station.

We, at Leadership, were tickled to find that this honor came from one Leadership Grad to another, Town Councilwoman Glenda Jackson (Class of 1999) was given the honor of presenting this award to Irene.

Larry Kushnick
Profile in Leadership: Larry Kushnick
Larry Kushnick, Class of 1998, has often
credited Leadership with giving him the tools and inspiration to refine and attain his business goals and objectives. For that we are grateful. We'd like to think we've also helped him find good people to connect with and engage in doing great things throughout the town. Heaven knows he's amassed an impressive track record of instigating and supporting good works. More, we suspect, than he'd ever let us give him credit for.

Larry currently serves as Vice Chair of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, and has chaired the Fall Festival for seven years now. He is also a member of the Leadership Huntington President's Council, through which he has provided us substantial volunteer, financial and moral support. He was instrumental in the founding of the Huntington Station Enrichment Center, as well as re-launching the Unity in the Community parade and festival. He helped launch the Kids Kafe, an after school program for local youth, and provides pro bono legal services to the Huntington Historical Society. Larry's most recent endeavor is joining together with Leadership notables and other great community members to found the Moonjumpers Charitable Foundation. Check out their first great event below!

The Long Islander's Danny Schrafel Asks: Please Support the Dolan Center through "Betty's Dream"
Many have been following our coverage of the challenges faced by the Dolan Family Health Center. While we have no update at this time, Danny Schrafel, a staff reporter for Long Islander Newspapers wants to honor the memory of his grandmother, Betty Lund, by encouraging the whole community to contribute online to support the Dolan Center. What better way to honor a wonderful woman's legacy of caring for those in need of help?

WHAT IS A MONEY BOMB?
According to a Wikipedia entry dedicated to the topic, a Moneybomb (money bomb, money-bomb, fundraising bomb) is a neologism coined in 2007 to describe a grassroots fundraising effort over a brief fixed time period... by dramatically increasing, concentrating, and publicizing fundraising activity during a specific hour or day. The term was first applied to a supporter-led fundraiser on behalf of presidential candidate Ron Paul, in which context the Mercury News described a moneybomb as being "a one-day fundraising frenzy".] The effort combines traditional and Internet-based fundraising appeals focusing especially on viral advertising through online vehicles such as YouTube, Myspace, Meetup, and online forums... Moneybombs have been used for grassroots fundraising and viral activism over the Internet by several 2008 presidential candidates in the United States. It continues to emerge as an important grassroots tool leading up to the 2010 midterm elections and 2012 presidential election in the United States.

By the way, Terry Smith of the Dolan Center wants to thank you. He says many came out in support of the Dolan Center, and had clearly read the op-ed of his that we shared. He and his staff are proud of the work they do, honored to serve the Town of Huntington, and grateful for their community's warm support.

The Summit is Coming, and Leadership is Going!!!
Vision's Executive Director, Eric Alexander is a Leadership Graduate (Class of 1999). Their co-founder and Board President, Ron Stein, is a Leadership Graduate (Class of 1998). Their Vice President is our own Trudy Fitzsimmons (Class of 1998, Current Program Director). In fact, since 1998, no less than 10 board and staff members have gone through our Leadership program. They don't have a candidate this year, so instead they're inviting the entire class into their world!

Why??? Because they believe that our broadly based brand of experiential civics and leadership development is just the kind of thing you need to really "get" the diverse interests taken into consideration when planning "Smart Growth." We deeply value the education they provide as well, and are thrilled that Vision Long Island is hosting the entire Class of 2012 at the next Smart Growth Summit -- What a donation! We hope you will join us:

2011 Smart Growth Summit
Thursday, November 18th, 8AM - 4PM
The Melville Marriott, 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road

There is no other parallel to this conference on Long Island. You will get to hear from Long Island Town Supervisors on their views about land use and what's going on in their backyards. The keynote lunch is always interesting. Approximately 15 interactive workshops, moderated and participated in by key professionals from the business, nonprofit, civic and government worlds across Long Island cover a broad diversity of economic, environmental and social concerns, as well as projects in process across Long Island. This is great learning, and exceptional networking!!!

Words from MJ Fitzgerald, Current Chair of the  Huntington Community Council
MJ was invited to speak at the annual Governmental Reports Breakfast of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce on October 27th. We thought her words as fitting for our audience as they were in that context...

Good morning. It is an honor for me to be speaking to you on behalf of the Huntington Community Council. We are a not-for-profit committee of the Leadership Huntington Foundation, founded in conjunction with the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce.

We are an organization of 47 not-for-profits in the Town of Huntington that work together to serve our community. In my many years being affiliated with this group I have rarely heard the word, "no." Each and every one of our members are truly dedicated to public service and are dedicated to helping those in our community that truly need our help. In my experience, if they personally cannot help, most will find the person or agency that can.

Our members get together monthly for a working brown bag lunch at Pederson Krag . We discuss our challenges, try to identify solutions and opportunities and share information. This is an invaluable tool for us all.

Two years ago we saw a void, which was really an opportunity to outreach to the Huntington Station community. Recognizing its ongoing challenges, we sought an opportunity to do something positive for the community while trying to build trust. Over this time span, we have held 4 community dinners with roughly 125- 175 people at each meal. It's a respite of sorts for many, as well as a good healthy meal for local families.

We initially funded these dinners through our membership dues and private donations but then a Huntington Community Council member reached out to Bethpage Federal Credit Union. They saw the value in this program and gave us a generous grant that, going forward, will allow us to provide 3 additional dinners.

We still take donations of time and food. Many people in the community have stepped up and prepared lasagna for 50 or homemade baked goods. Local restaurants have prepared and/or donated food. People brought their bbq grills on trucks to cook. Others brought crafts to do with the kids. Some came to serve the food or just visit ...and the list goes on.

The untold stories of many will remain that way at their request. However, our mission is ultimately to educate our community about all the services available in the Town of Huntington. These, by the way, in their depth and breadth of services are far and above what most towns on the Island are able to provide.

This is only possible with the funding support of the Suffolk County Legislature, the Town of Huntington, and the generosity of individuals and companies that see the benefit of a healthy community.

The Importance of the role which nonprofits play within our community cannot be ignored. Without our community, the greater community would be in a much different state of affairs.

I ask you all on behalf of the Huntington Community Council, all of the nonprofits in the Town of Huntington, and all those we serve within the Town of Huntington that you as individuals and representatives of local businesses and government continue to step up and help us support those that are truly in need and help us help our neighbors. I also ask our elected officials to be vigilant in your decisions that affect our most vulnerable populations.

*  Our services have never been at such a high level of demand and the funding has never been so tenuous. We are all doing everything we can to continue to provide the continuum of services to our community with what we have.

*   You can help support our efforts by donating money, or food (according to the most recent census, 22% of children on long Island are in poverty and might eat 2 meals a day), or donate clothing, coats in particular at this time of year, or donate your time.

At this juncture we all are in the same boat... it might just be a dinghy but we but we are all still afloat! Please support your local organizations that support our community.

Thank You!
We seek in these messages to continually thank and support the multitude of people who fuel Leadership Huntington and give this organization reason, purpose, and deep satisfaction. There's no way to ever do it all at once, but we hope you know that every bit of financial support, guidance and volunteer effort is deeply appreciated and has impact beyond what any of us can know.

We love to hear your feedback and to find out more about what our grads are up to. Please send your comments and submissions to info@leadershiphuntington.org

Sponsorship opportunities are available

Sincerely,
Katheryn Laible, Newsletter Editor
