Happy Thanksgiving...
Community leadership is truly a community effort. As we pause to reflect on all we have to be grateful for, our Leadership community ranks high on many lists. We thank all who joined us in our 15-year celebration, where we honored incredible community trustees and celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2010 -- yet another Best Class Ever. Moreover, we thank all those who this year, and in those before, gave of themselves to make this program not only possible, but a greatly rewarding success.
We hope in this newsletter to continually thank and support the multitude of people who fuel Leadership Huntington and give this organization reason, purpose, and deep satisfaction. There's no way to ever do it all at once, but we hope you know that every bit of financial support, guidance and volunteer effort is deeply appreciated and has impact beyond what any of us can know. We in the Town of Huntington are truly blessed to have so many great citizens who value and support each other as we work -- each in our own way -- to understand and address the complex challenges facing our communities. We wish you all our heartfelt thanks. May you be blessed with health, wealth and happiness, be surrounded by friends and family, and take the time to enjoy the season and all it's meaning. We wish you the best. |

As You Plan Your Holiday Festivities...
We hope you shop local, supporting our beautiful downtown communities, and please consider those who catered to Leadership this year. We can vouch for their deliciously good service and their commitment to our community. Please give them your support -- and don't forget to tell them 'Thanks!' on behalf of Leadership!

15 Years of Leadership - A Gala Celebration!!!

THANK YOU, everyone, who has offered their time, their money, their unique talents and personalities to making Leadership Huntington what it has become. There was standing room only as over 130 citizens gathered on October 26th at the Harbor Club to celebrate our 15th Anniversary Gala and Class of 2010 Graduation. Honorees, representing a legacy of community leadership included Founding Trustee, Arthur Goldstein, Esq, Community Trustee, James Kelly of JVKelly Group, and Outstanding Graduates, Nancy Engelhardt (aka Nancy Pagano) of the Energeia Partnership (Class of 2000) and Eric Alexander of Vision Long Island (Class of 1999).
It was truly a great place to be. Board President, Sara Bluestone, served as Master of Ceremonies. Many of the group's founders, including Vaughan Spilsbury, Lee Kilbrith, Jon Ten Haagen, and Elisabeth Hubbard attended, as did our original Leadership Council President Carol Rubin (Class of 1995). A video of Ken Christensen, fellow founder and now Chair of the Leadership Huntington President's Council was played. Attending elected officials included Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, Justice William Rebolini, NYS Assemblyman Andrew Raia (Class of 1997), Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone, Councilwoman Glenda Jackson (Class of 1999), and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (Class of 1995). Key attending sponsors included Robert Scheiner, H2M Group, Tracey Edwards of Verizon (Class of 1997) and National Grid's Bob DeMarinis (Class of 2007, current Leadership Trustee). Of course, the main VIPs were the Class of 2010:
Cailtlin Apostoli · Rhiannon Beauregard · Michael J. Davies · Lynda Furey · Ronald J. Gulmi · Dragan Kolanovic · Richard Koubek · Debre Ann Letourneau · Mark McAteer · Irene Moore · Pilar Moya-Mancera · Gina M. Pellettieri · Andrew Persich · Genevieve Sloup · Jessice Nicole Saskil · Matt Spirn · Diane Teets · Judith Thompson · Elissa Ward · Pamela Winikoff

Mike Davies of the graduating class, pictured with Susan Hayes, (both of Verizon) presented a video created by fellow grad Gina Pellettieri, which can be seen on YouTube. He noted the current class has coined a catch phrase for the organization, "Ordinary People, Extraordinary Citizens: Leadership Huntington". "Use it all you want," he quipped, "just make sure you give me credit"
In a world where the tenor of civil discourse too often seems to have devolved past the point of anything one might call "civil," Leadership Huntington brings citizens together to explore the issues and resources of their community, participate in thoughtful debate, and consider how best to approach the region's most complex concerns. Started 15 years ago as a partnership of the Huntington Chamber Foundation and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the program has been an independent 501(c)3 since 2007. Its unique Flagship Program has yielded over 250 graduates holding leadership roles in every sector - government, business and not-for-profit -- within the Town of Huntington and well beyond. In addition to the nine-month Leadership Huntington Flagship Program, LH has introduced community roundtables, networking and socials, held state of the town events, and hosted hot topic forums designed to develop, connect and engage a broad range of citizens in active community stewardship. Leadership Huntington is a non-partisan, independent, member supported organization that is exceedingly grateful for the warm support they have received from individuals, local businesses, community organizations and local government. Special gratitude is offered for the long term, consistent and very generous support of Verizon, the H2M Group, Huntington Hospital, National Grid, The Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, and The Town of Huntington. |
A Few Words from our Honorees...

Fellow founder Jill Tane, who now lives between retirement homes in Vermont and Florida, made a special appearance with her husband Stu Tane, to introduce the Founder's Award recipient, Arthur Goldstein, Esq. Both are pictured here with Leadership President, Sara Bluestone. In addition to his strong support of Leadership, Mr. Goldstein has been central to many civic endeavors, including serving as a founding member of the Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center Board of Directors, where he now serves as President-Elect. The love, gratitude and respect felt for Mr. Goldstein at this event was palpable.
In accepting his award, Mr Goldstein reflected on his experience and lamented at how negative the world has become. He said, "While it would be wonderful to bask in the glory of what we did, I'm even more delighted to see you up and coming...It's much harder today than it was for us, but you guys are moving forward. That's good, because we can't turn back the clock."
Nancy Engelhardt, Director of the Energeia Partnership, pictured here with long time Leadership sponsor, Bob Scheiner of H2M group was introduced by Leadership Vice-President Mark Mediavilla (Class of 2006). She spoke of "Divine Moments," crediting her Leadership experience as one of them. She later said, "Nurturing my passion for helping to build functional teams and collaborative communities, my experience as Director of LH has served as the catalyst for me to help create the regional leadership program at Molloy College. The Energeia Partnership is the answer to a regional need, LH is a best practice for community leadership on Long Island and in the country...Our combined impact is in its infancy, and the legacy of our efforts will live on in ways that cannot be measured or weighed right now."
"It is good works and faith that keeps us working towards our most humble goals," Nancy continued, "Equal opportunity, housing, education, health care and nutritious food for all. It doesn't seem a lot to ask.....so we carry on! Please join us and BE THE CHANGE you want to see on Long Island and in the world!"
Katheryn Laible (Class of 2001), introduced Eric Alexander, who said, "Leadership Huntington is a the only program on Long Island that pulls together folks from all segments of the community to gain skills, understand the Town and learn from each other with any level of depth. My experience at Leadership connected me with an eclectic group of community and business leaders, historic preservationists, human service and government professionals along with artists, poets and musicians. "On a personal note," Alexander continued, "my role at Leadership Huntington helped prepare me for community work in Huntington and across Long Island. This is just one reason why we have had we have had five staff and six Board members complete the program. On an Island where most decisions are made on the local level the Leadership Huntington training program is invaluable."

President's Council Member Larry Kushnick (Class of 1997) introduced James Kelly, who said, "Whether you work with the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Arts Council or any other group that serves your Community, Leadership Huntington builds the foundation for bringing your strongest talents to the area in our community where it is needed the most. Talent, trust, instinct, boldness and effort are instilled in this program. Those in this class, as in classes before it and classes still to come, are very ready to climb and bring their neighbors to a higher level."
We, at Leadership, bask in these warm words that validate our effort and our cause. Even more than words, was the feeling of deep community connection within the room. Maybe it's the common experience of the program, or maybe it's the kind of folks this thing attracts. Whatever it is, this event and the people who came together for it, made for a tremendous success. We are delighted at the possibilities to come.

Time Sensitive Advice! 2010 - The Year of Charitable Giving By Mark Palios, CFP®, Raymond James & Associates
Without your support Leadership Huntington would not be enjoying the success it has had over the last 15 years.
How many of us give because our accountant tells us to? How many of us give because it's good to give to worthy causes?
Now, getting back to the first question, how many of us like that we get some type of tax relief because of contributions to non-profits?
In the past, if we gave to a non-profit we received a tax deduction that we could use to lower our tax liability. However the higher your income, the less benefit you received because the IRS would "PHASEOUT" these types of deductions.
I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER PROFESSIONAL, and I am going to share with you some very valuable and timely information that I give to my clients that are philanthropic within the scope of their financial plan.
2010 may go down as the best year to give to Non-Profits/Charities because there is NO PHASEOUT OF ITEMIZED DEDUCTIONS this year. It's hard to imagine charitable giving being more advantageous than this year especially considering the new tax legislation that is being proposed in Washington for next year.
In fact, I have advised my philanthropic clients if they can afford it, to consider accelerating the next five or ten years worth of annual gifts into this year because the tax benefit may not be better. I will tell you that some clients are hesitant to give a large sum of money over to their favorite charities in one year.
Here is the solution to that hurdle - rather than give the money directly to the church or Leadership Huntington or the United Way, take the money and donate it to a public charity which offers a Donor Advised Fund. Once the money is donated, it can only be disbursed as a grant to non-profit organizations. You will get the charitable contribution for what you invest for this year, and then you control the timing and the amounts of the disbursements. Another benefit is you can "donate" appreciated securities instead of cash to some funds. Best of all, there are no legal costs and no cost to set up any trusts or foundations however, the Trustee of the Fund will charge management fees for day-to-day management of assets. Obviously, talk to your tax, legal and investment advisors to see if something like this makes sense for you.
If you would like more information give me a call. 631-367-3598
