Thank you,
Covanta!
Covanta Energy is an internationally recognized owner and operator of Energy-from-Waste and power generation projects.  Their facilities convert municipal solid waste into renewable energy for numerous communities, predominantly in the United States.

We at Leadership Huntington are grateful to Covanta for opening their doors to our class and providing a tour of their facilities. Their informative presentation on connecting waste management with energy generation, as well as their warm hospitality, were greatly appreciated by all.

Covanta has been a valued supporter of Leadership since 1995, and we look forward to working closely with them going forward.
For this, and all they do for the Town of Huntington, THANKS!!!

Citizens Police Adademy

Leadership Vice President Joins "The Force"
Once or twice a year, the Suffolk County Police Department allows county residents the opportunity to join the Citizen's Police Academy. Scenario role playing, emergency vehicle training and firearms demonstrations are just part of the program.

"The Citizens Police Academy is a natural fit for Leadership Huntington graduates as well as anyone interested in the workings of the Suffolk County Police Department, particularly with the gun violence now taking place on our streets that prompted the shuttering of Jack Abrams school and its ripple affect across all communities," says Leadership Vice President, Mark Mediavilla. "I highly recommend the program."

Mark and others graduating from the program were featured in a Times Beacon Record article. Information directly from the SCPD is here. Enrollment starts again in February 2011.

Art Day at Usdan
After a recent workshop starting at Usdan center for the Creative and Performing Arts, Leadership Board President Sara Bluestone offered thanks to their Director of Development, Patrice Frank:

"Usdan is a perfect one stop arts day showcase for LHF. Our participants not only get to experience art in an inspiring setting but also to see the value of a vital organization in our community and the important role you play in nurturing creative young minds. Bravo for providing leadership in the arts!" "

Of course we did not stop there," says Trudy Fitzsimmons, Leadership Huntington Chairman of Curriculum, "the next destination on Arts day was Walt Whitman's Birthplace and visitor center where we were welcomed by the Executive Director Cynthia Shor and surrounded by the art of words from Walt Whitman. The Curator gave us an informative tour and we luxuriated in the surroundings for a time, even staying after class, because no one wanted to leave!"

You can enjoy USDAN, too! From the brochure: "For one glorious Sunday in September, Usdan Center, Long Island's premier arts camp, will be alive with the sights and sounds of grownups at play. On Sunday, September 26th, 2010, come to camp and leave the kids at home!" For more details, contact Patrice Frank, Usdan Director of Development at pfrank@usdan.com or call 631-643-7900.

Unity in the Community
Leadership has been working with the Huntington Awareness Community Partnership in planning the Unity in the Community Parade and Fair, to be held Saturday, October 2nd in Huntington Station. They are seeking participation from a variety of community groups.

The purpose of this new parade and fair is to create a pageantry of the many dynamic groups, individuals and organizations throughout the Town to publicly demonstrate their unity, diversity and solidarity. It will be held in Huntington Station and will include a parade, fair and sidewalk sales.

For more information, please contact Dolores Thompson at 631-425-2540, huntsec@aol.com. To volunteer on behalf of Leadership Huntington, please email Sara Bluestone at info@leadershiphuntington.org.

Exhibition of Vietnam War Memorial - The Dignity Wall
Leadership Graduate and Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cutherbertson, together with Supervisor Frank Petrone, US Representative Steve Israel and other Town Board Members have announced that the Dignity Memorial Wall - the traveling Vietnam War Memorial - will be in Peter Nelson Park (aka Oakwood Park) from October 1-3. The Wall, a three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., has been touring the nation since 1990. This 240-foot long, eight-foot high, faux-granite replica contains the names of more than 58,000 Americans who died or are missing in Vietnam. To see the memorial, to touch it and experience its magnitude offers unforgettable moments of reflection and healing to thousands of visitors.

The Town is seeking volunteers to assist with tasks including setup, hospitality, security and dismantling. The Town is also seeking sponsors who can help defray some of the costs of bringing the Wall to Huntington. Interested persons should contact Stephen Jimenez (also a Leadership Grad!) at 631-351-3171.
We hope you enjoyed this edition of the Leading Edge. We love to hear your feedback and to find out more about what our grads are up to. Please send your comments and submissions to info@leadershiphuntington.org

Sponsorship opportunities are available

Sincerely,
Katheryn Laible, Newsletter Editor
