Avoiding Post Vacation Stress

vacation

Today is August 1st and tomorrow is my first day back after one week of vacation.  I had limited access to email and voicemail while I was gone, so the thought of sorting through my inbox and messages tomorrow is daunting.

I went online today to see if there were any articles to help make that transition back to work any less stressful.  I found out that there is a name for my anxiety; Post Vacation Stress Syndrome!  Most of the articles I read stated the obvious....get a good night sleep the night before, go in early your first day back to sort through emails and retrieve messages.  However, some of the advice was very counter productive.  One article suggested calling in sick the first day back to give yourself more time, and another article even suggested to avoid going back to work as long as possible and take an extra week vacation!

If you are receiving this eNewletter today, I obviously didn't opt for the extra time off and am back at my desk because there is so much going on this month!  This Friday, Lakewood Hospital will hold their Starry Night Benefit, followed by the Lakewood Arts Festival on Saturday and LakewoodAlive's pARTy on Saturday into the evening.  Then there is the upcoming golf outing, New Teacher Luncheon, the Wing Crawl and a BAH at the Winking Lizard.

Find out about these events and what our committees are up to in the articles below. Also, keep me in your thoughts and wish me luck as I reenter the real world!

July Meeting Recap
Economic Development Update
At the July's meeting, Planning & Development Director for the City of Lakewood, Nathan Kelly, gave a presentation that highlighted many of the exciting new developments in the city, and discussed the city's strategy to maintain and bring in new business.

Mr. Kelly's power point presentation highlighted various economic

development projects recently completed or underway, such as the restoration taking place at the Bailey Building, the new outdoor dining patio at Pepper's Italian Restaurant, the store front revitalization done by new architects at 17306 Madison Avenue, and the upcoming redevelopment that will be taking place at the current Drug Mart plaza.

Nathan Kelly, Planning & Development Director for Lakewood, OH

The overall prognosis is that Lakewood has survived the current recession in good standing with vacancy rates actually dropping on both Detroit & Madison Avenue.  This puts Lakewood in a relatively strong position as the economy begins to rebound. The city is focusing on attracting small to medium sized service sector businesses that can utilize the unique office space available here.

Lakewood's Planning & Development Department also enjoys strong partnerships with the Chamber of Commerce, LakewoodAlive and other community stakeholders in creating a vibrant business culture that encourages entrepreneurship and private sector investment to start and grow businesses.

"Small Businees is Big Business" Brochure
website header
The Economic Development Task Force has been working with LakewoodAlive and the City of Lakewood to develop a user friendly brochure to help entrepreneurs find the resources they need to open a business in Lakewood.   The three part brochure titled: Small Business is Big Business in Lakewood, covers the topics: why to choose Lakewood as your location, where to find financial resources, and how to work with the building department to obtain a certificate of occupancy.
The brochure is now available in hardcopy at the Chamber office, LakewoodAlive office, and City Hall. There is also a PDF version available on our website.

The next West End Merchants meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 18 at 3:00 pm at the Beck Cafe at 17823 Detroit Avenue.  Anyone interested in attending should rsvp to Val Mechenbier at vmechenbier@lakewoodchamber.org or phone 216.226.2900.

Membership Task Force
Reinvest in Your Business. Renew Your Membership
Renewal invoices were mailed in June for the 2010-2011 membership year.  Hopefully you don't need convincing to reinvest and get involved in the Lakewood Chamber, but if you do; consider this excerpt from an article by Dr. Ivan Misner, author and founder of BNI (the world's largest networking organization) in a recent addition of Entrepreneur magazine.

"Join your local chamber. Chambers conduct social and business events where you can socialize and develop relationships.  Becoming a member of a chamber of commerce provides opportunities to give back to the community and capitalize on significant member benefits; serving in the leadership raises your recognition, visibility and credibility, as well as that of your business."

Take it from an expert, there is tremendous value in your membership. Membership is an investment in your business.  It's far less expensive than traditional advertising, and the potential savings from our various benefits program often help cover the cost.

Call our office at 216-226-2900 or email me at pryan@lakewoodchamber.org if you have any questions regarding your membership, and remember....we're in business for your business!
