Letter from the CEO & President
June 30th will mark the end of my first year as your CEO & President and as I look back over the past months, I'm exhausted!  We do a lot of different things here at the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce...it never ends!

In all seriousness, we do have a lot going on and it is all focused around our membership and our mission of advancing the commercial, industrial and professional interests in our community.

In the area of ADVOCACY, we work with our local government to help make Lakewood a great place to do business.  We attend City Council meetings, host election forums, and address issues that concern local business.

We continue to improve and expand the BENEFITS we offer to help save you money. This year we added discounts on Constant Contact marketing programs and acccounts receivables collections.  Check our website for the entire list of discounted benefits available through your membership.

We surveyed your wants and needs for EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS, and have scheduled four quarterly seminars at an affordable price on topics you wish to learn more about.

We published the Lakewood Centennial Map and are in the process of publishing our 2010 Lakewood Magazine. We also offer website advertising and eMarketing through the chamber online newsletter and weekly updates. These are just a few examples of the affordable MARKETING options we offer our members.

For more exposure, you can also sponsor a meeting or sponsor one of our EVENTS. This year we added Bidding, Bidding, Bought, a Holiday Online Auction to encourage shoppers to Buy Local.  And of course, there is the 7th Annual Taste of Lakewood this coming Sunday, June 6 that highlights the eclectic mix of restaurants Lakewood is known for.

We continue to support ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT in Lakewood through our partnerships with LakewoodAlive, the City of Lakewood, PILLARS of Lakewood and most recently with the formation of a West End business group.

On top of all that we also try and host several NETWORKING opportunities through our monthly meetings, and at both the Chamber's and PILLAR'S monthly Business after Hours.

Joining a Chamber of Commerce is an investment and we try and offer you the best return possible.  If you believe there is something missing from the list above, please call me and we can discuss it.

After the Taste of Lakewood, I was going to try and relax, but we just have too much going on!

Our May meeting was our annual scholarship breakfast at Pier W Restaurant.  The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce awarded 4 scholarships to deserving high school seniors; Nathaniel Giffels, Mary Leach & Shannon Walsh from Lakewood High School and Stephen Gacka from St. Edward High School.

The chamber scholarship is unique because of the criteria used to select our recipients.  We ask that a student have substantial work experience in addition to demonstrating academic success and leadership ability. Each of this year's recipients exemplified this standard and we wish them the best of luck at college next year.

City Announces "Buy Lakewood!" Loyalty Program

buy lakewood

Recently, Lakewood Mayor Ed FitzGerald announced an initiative to create a program that would help stimulate Lakewood's economy as well as create a healthy interaction between residents and merchants within the city.  As a result, the Buy Lakewood! Loyalty Program will begin on June 1st.  It is a free program offered to Lakewood businesses and Lakewood residents.  It is dedicated to educating residents on the importance of buying locally and the economic impact it has on our city.

This program is one of the only programs in northeast Ohio that provides an opportunity for each Lakewood merchant to choose any type of discount they would like to offer card holding members.  Merchants within the city limits will have the ability to go online and enroll their business at www.onelakewood.com. Once the business is enrolled, the city will add their business to an online directory showing their participation in the program.  Business owners will receive a window cling displaying their support for the Buy Lakewood! Loyalty Program.

All Lakewood residents are encouraged to register at www.onelakewood.com to receive their card. Once their name, address, phone number, and an email address (if applicable)  is entered, a card will be delivered to the resident's house along with a letter of appreciation and further explanation of how buying locally helps improve our community in many ways.  The Buy Lakewood! Program will provide residents immediate savings that will stay within the community.

Buying locally helps to improve our community in many ways:
·        It keeps dollars in Lakewood's Economy.  For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the city's tax base.
·        Likewise, this program embraces what makes Lakewood unique.  Lakewood is a suburb where we shop, eat and entertain - it is what makes our neighborhood our home.
·        Residents will also be able to have more choices.  A marketplace of hundreds of small businesses helps to ensure more innovation, competition and lower prices over the long term.  Local businesses choosing products based on what their local customers need and desire guarantee a more diverse range of product and service choices.
·        Lastly, local businesses are the lifeblood of our community.  When we keep our dollars in the city, every purchase contributes toward our schools, our culture and the well-being of our friends, relatives and neighbors.

The Buy Lakewood! Program has been implemented to support both the residents and merchants within the city.  This program will provide citizens discounts at no additional charges while providing local merchants a boost in economic activity.

Legislative Task Force
Graffiti Removal
It is the Chamber's mission to provide businesses with the resources necessary to be successful and to maintain a positive image in the community.  Pursuant to our mission, we are responding to recent concerns expressed by Lakewood Chamber Members regarding recent incidents involving "tagging" or graffiti vandalism of businesses in the City.  In fact, after being made aware of these concerns, the Chamber itself became a victim of "tagging." Graffiti is the words, colors, and shapes drawn or scratched on buildings, overpasses, train cars, desks, and other surfaces. It's done without permission and it's against the law.  A "tag" is a graffiti vandal's moniker which is applied quickly and repetitively.

The City has made significant progress in identifying and prosecuting recent graffiti vandals.  However, it is important to note under City Ordinance 68-97, Section 1306.31, private businesses are responsible for removing graffiti on their property and failure to do so may result in a violation of such ordinance.  Education is essential with respect to prevention of graffiti vandalism and in effort to assist in the education of the business community we offer the following information:

What Should A Business Do If It Finds Itself A Victim of Graffiti Vandalism?

Document.  Take photographs of graffiti before it's removed.  Photographs will assist the police in their investigation.
Report.  Contact the police department at (216) 521-6773 (non-emergency number) to report graffiti vandalism.  Make sure police complete an incident report.
Remove. Remove graffiti promptly and completely. Immediate removal of graffiti-within 24-48 hours is key in successful graffiti prevention.  Contact Kevin Kelly (Kevin.Kelley@lakewoodoh.net) at the City's Building Department for additional information on commercial products which may assist with removal.

How Can A Business Prevent Graffiti?
Ongoing Upkeep. Exterior appearance that suggests neglect attracts vandals.
Rapid Removal. Prompt and continual removal of graffiti is the best way for businesses owners to protect the image of their location and studies show removal within 24-48 hours results in a nearly zero rate of reoccurrence.
Control Access.  Incorporate vegetation such as shrubs, thorny plants and vines to restrict access add or improve light around property.
Set Up Security.  Install security cameras and/or install flashing motion sensor lights.

We hope you can use the above information as a resource to assist in maintaining a successful business and positive image in the Lakewood Community.  Check out http://www.graffitihurts.org for additional information on graffiti vandalism and prevention.
