Letter from the CEO & President
As I look at my calendar for the month of February, I realize there are a lot of cool things going on in Lakewood right now!

With the bleak weather and even bleaker economy, it's hard not to have a bleak outlook. It's easy to lay low and hibernate like this month's animal star, the groundhog.  Instead, Lakewood businesses and organizations are pushing forward and creating opportunities to get informed, support great causes, socialize and network!

Be part of that push and attend an event or fundraiser this month.  There are several listed in today's newsletter, and more to come in this month's Weekly Updates. Get out, get involved, get connected and make February the shortest and most productive month of the year.

January Meeting Focused on Federal Reserve Bank
Hal MitchelltreeTraditionally, the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce starts out the new year with a presentation from the Federal Reserve Bank.  This year's topic was "Demystifying the Federal Reserve" presented by Hal Mitchelltree, an administrative support team leader at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Mr. Mitchelltree opened his presentation explaining that he had given this speech for 15 years, and it had always been the same information year after year, until now.  He went onto explain that the Federal Reserve Bank is creating monetary policy the organization has never considered before in an effort to bring the country out of the current recession. "It's uncharted water, but the risk is too great to do nothing." stated Mitchelltree.

Thank you to Hal Mitchelltree for his informative presentation, The Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank and especially...

Economic Development Task Force
Sets Goals for 2010
website header
The Economic Development Task Force held a strategic planning session in January to identify economic development projects for 2010-11.

The outcome of this session defined 2 achievable goals for the upcoming year:
 1)  Work with LakewoodAlive and the City of Lakewood to finalize a user-friendly brochure for new businesses that includes information on business start-up, city guidelines and procedures and financial resources.
2)  Work with merchants to develop a West End business district using the National Main Street approach.

The next meeting will be a presentation from Mary Anne Crampton on the Main Street approach for creating a merchants association.

"Selling in a Tough Economy"

The Education Task Force announces the first educational seminar of 2010:
Selling in a Tough Economy
Thursday, February 4, 2010
8:00-10:30 am
$15 Members/ $20 Non-members

How do you keep your services relevant to your clients when there isn't that much business out there?  Where do you invest your time and resources?  Diane Helbig of Seize this Day Coaching states, "Many of my clients have realized that they were not selling as much as just taking orders when the economy was booming.  Now the phones aren't ringing, and they're scrambling for business."

Sound familiar?  Diane's presentation, Selling in a Tough Economy, will help you rethink how to sell your product, your services, your business & yourself in tough times.

Legislative Task Force Held Reception for Lakewood City Hall

Lakewood City logoThe Legislative Task Force held a reception at the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce for our Board of Directors and all Lakewood City Council Representatives and Department Directors on January 12th.

The informal gathering was catered by Gatherings Kitchen and was well attended by both our Board and City Hall. Nicole Farley, the Legislative Task Force Chair, hopes this reception will become an annual event and continue to strengthen the partnership between the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and City Hall.

Marketing  & Public Relations Task Force
Lakewood Centennial Map
The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce offers many affordable marketing opportunities to its members and one of our most popular is advertising on the Lakewood Map!

An ad on the Lakewood Map is an excellent way to reach new customers and great Public Relations.  The map is given out to all new residents and employees in Lakewood and is available for free to residents at various locations through out the city.

We are currently running very low on maps so it's necessary to update and print a 2010-11 Centennial version.  Spaces are going fast on this historic Lakewood publication. Contact Scott Hughes, our independent map sales agent, at 440-327-8499 for pricing and contract information.  Map ad rates and sales contracts area also available on our website at www.lakewoodchamber.org.

Membership Task Force

January MeetingThe Membership Task Force would like to thank all our members who brought a guest to the January Meeting. We had 8 guests at our meeting and we already have new member as a result!  Each member and their guest received Sweet Designs chocolate from the Chamber.

Based on the success of the January "Bring a Guest" Breakfast, the committee is considering repeating the concept at another meeting later this year.
