Welcome to the first Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, online only, monthly eNewsletter.  I'm sure many of you are wondering, "what is the difference between the monthly eNewsletter and the Weekly Updates I'm receiving every Monday?"

The focus of the eNewsletter will be primarily on Chamber Task Force updates.  Weekly Updates will communicate events and breaking news. Of course there will be some overlap, but the goal is to communicate information on a timely basis and engage our membership in the hard work our task forces do behind the scenes.

As you read the following updates, consider joining one of the Chamber Task Forces.  We are always looking for talented members to share their expertise and knowledge and weencourage your participation.

Contact me at pryan@lakewoodchamber.org or call the office at 216-226-2900 for more information.

Economic Development Task Force's Engineering Incubator Launches E-Bike Project
E-cycle teamThe Economic Development Task Force has been collaborating with the students of West Shore Career Tech, The Lakewood City Schools, Cleveland State University and manufacturers in the region to develop an Engineering Incubator in the City of Lakewood.

The premise is to give students in our area the opportunity to solve engineering problems for small businesses.  Not only does this benefit both the student and business, it highlights the field of engineering as both as a career choice and as an entrepreneurial venture.

After 2 years of planning, the first Engineering Incubator project has been brought to the classroom.  ModTech, a manufacturer of lithium ion batteries, approached the incubator committee about testing the life span of their batteries on electric bicycles sold by Forever E-bikes, LLC.  A presentation was given to the students in the pre-engineering classes at West Shore Career Tech last week and students could begin running tests on the batteries and E-bike as early as this month.

Congratulations to the entire Economic Development Task Force and our partners on a a great collaborative effort.
Education Task Force Wants Input
Participate in the Educational Work Shop Survey
In an effort to bring you relevant topics that relate to your business, the Educational Task Force will be hosting educational workshops beginning in 2010.  To do this effectively, we need your input.

An online Educational Work Shop Survey will be sent out to all Chamber members during the week of October 12.  Please take the time to participate in the survey. The results will determine the topics, frequency, and cost of these workshops.

Marketing  & Public Relations
halloween window paintingThis October marks the 5th year that the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and The Beck Center for the Arts have hosted the West End Halloween Window Walk.  This event is a great way for the Chamber and The Beck to reach out to the children in the community and to promote businesses in the West End.  The event has doubled from 64 painters in 2005 to over 130 painters in 2008.  It is also an affordable and fun way to market your business.  We have 6 prize divisions with a 1st prize purse of $100!  Any business interesting in sponsoring a prize, contact the Chamber office.

Advertising in the eNewsletter is an affordable way to reach over 600 local businesses. Call the chamber for more details!

Membership Task Force Focusing on Retention & Growth
static clingYou probably have received the new Lakewood Chamber of Commerce Membership static cling in the mail recently.  The colorful decal was the first of many new membership retention and growth strategies recommended by the Membership Task Force.   The group is also in the process of developing a new Membership tri-fold and website improvements to enhance and grow our membership.

The Community West Foundation of Fairview, Lakewood and Lutheran Hospitals honored Curt Brosky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lakewood Senior Citizens (LSC) Service Corp; Mayor Edward FitzGerald, Mayor of the City of Lakewood; and Lucy Sinagra, founder of the Lakewood Arts Festival with Community Service Awards this week for their contributions to the West Shore community. All are outstanding recipients for the work they do on a daily basis to improve our city.

Lake Erie CrushersThe Lake Erie Crushers capped off a remarkable inaugural season by winning the 2009 Frontier League Championship by virtue of a 13-10 win over River City in game five of the championship series at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.  The Crushers took the best of five series three games to two.

The Lake Erie Crushers are the newest expansion team in the Frontier League, an independent professional league with 12 teams throughout the Midwest. The team plays its home games at All Pro Freight Stadium, a new 5,000 capacity ballpark located at the intersection of I-90 and Route 611 in Avon.
