Happy 2012 to you!   It's hard to believe we are already a month in the new year.  One of my new year goals (I prefer goals rather than resolutions),  is to get back to writing this ezine at least on a quarterly basis.  I've recently joined a Master Mind group where I now have accountability (with fines for not doing what I said!)  We can all support each other with our own goals as we all have a desire to move our lives and work forward.    What about you? Are you seeing some opportunities in your ministry for more support in making your goal become a reality?    This edition will focus on practical ways we can create, manage, and execute on those goals that if implemented, will make a significant difference to our ministry lives.

One of the services I offer to ministries is coaching.  People can experience transformational results through the power of questioning.  To enhance my skills, I am  enrolled in the Coaching program at Western Seminary, pursuing a second Masters with an emphasis on coaching.  To find out more about how coaching could be of value to you or your ministry leaders, you can go to http://www.jandwyerbang.com/services/coaching.

Feature Article - Analyzing the Why before you get to the What

So many of us want to get more things done, with limited budget and resources. We may have dreams that we see ourselves accomplishing...someday.  We may even have goals that are written (specific, measurable, and realistic).  But at the end of the day, or the week, or month -we see those same goals still written down with very little forward motion.   This may be a clue that you need to analyze the "why" before pursuing the "what."  Here are some ideas about pursuing the "why" before you can get to the what:

o     Why do you want to accomplish this goal?  Most of the goals that we have accomplished had a strong, emotional "why" to them.  In Simon Sinek's book, "Start with Why," he uncovers the power of the "why" and how getting in touch with our purpose can get us more motivated, enthusiastic, and determined to succeed, despite obstacles.  Ask yourself - why do you want to accomplish this particular goal? What is the hidden or unhidden motivation?  How can you align this goal with your ministry's goals or a higher calling?

o     Why do you think the goal isn't getting done?  We have all had times where we don't accomplish as much as we would like.  It is helpful though to understand why week after week, the goal continues to be on your "to do list." Does the goal need to be divided into smaller doable chunks?  Do you need to enlist the support of others in your team?  Are you waiting on responses from your boss or other leaders in your organization?  Is this a "just nice to have" but if accomplished, will not make a significant difference to your ministry?

o     Why the goal now?  We can have great goals but the timing may be wrong.  Why this goal -now - during this present time? Rather than a month from now, six months from now?  A year from now?   Ask yourself why this present time?  Perhaps you need to obtain more funding or finances. Or you need to put other things in place for this goal to be successful in your ministry or team. Perhaps you need to collaborate with others before you move forward with this goal.

Though the "why" question is not as common a coaching question (It tends to put people in a defensive mode), these why questions can get beneath the surface motivators and help us uncover the real underlying inspiration to propel us to get what we want.  When I coach with clients, I lead them through a powerful discovery process that helps them overcome obstacles, create awareness, and accomplish their goals. The kinds of questions I ask in my coaching practice lead to self-discovery, inner awareness, and forward motion.

 Boundless Boosters for your Ministry

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Neither can go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our relationship, or a bad ministry decision.  But we always have the choice to move forward.

Here is one "boundless booster" designed to leap you forward in your life and in this new year:

Jan Business PhotoBe Hopeful -

Hope does not disappoint us!  Where do we get our hope? From the promises of Jesus Christ.  As you start out this New Year -have "expectant hope" as you prayerfully, in faith, lay out your dreams, your goals, and your plans before the Lord and ask Him for His help in doing "more than you can imagine."

It may take longer than we anticipated - but with Christ, we are making progress!
