Jan Business Photo Message from Jan Dwyer Bang

Boundless greetings to you during this Fall Season!  Happy Thanksgiving!  If you can believe it, this is my 1st edition for 2011!  One of the goals I had for this month was to finally get this edition out - and here it is!   I can tell you all sort of reasons why my editions for 2011 are so spotty - but the main thing is that I'm back in the saddle.  What about you? Perhaps you are feeling good about what you set out to do in the beginning of 2011 - or perhaps like me, you feel like you need to "get back in the saddle." Here's the encouragement - the saddle is there, reachable - do-able - one step at a time.   In fact, this edition is focused on small, do-able actions you can take to help you reach 2011 feeling good about what you accomplished and excited for your future!

In October, I had the privilege of serving as one of the concurrent session presenters for the Washington State Employees Credit Union's (WSECU) annual meeting.  I was amazed by the positive enthusiasm, employee recognition, and engaged and motivated employees and leaders.  Truly, this is an organization that has been able to create and maintain a highly effective service culture.   What about your organization's service culture?   I have created a new assessment that will help your organization assess your strengths and gaps in your service culture.  I've spoken on "Creating a Service culture" for organizations, non profits and small businesses for years (and recently my article entitled, "A Service Culture" was printed in the fall 2011, Outcomes Magazine, the Magazine of Christian Leadership Alliance).

This new service assessment will be launched on my website in December and you can go to my website at www.JanDwyerBang.com/Products to find more information.

Moving Forward Despite the Setbacks

I can get overwhelmed with the myriad of things that are on my to-do list.  I bet you can too. I've got things that take a few minutes to get done, several hours to complete, and whole days to finish.  Some of these items would fall into single doable actions, (i.e. getting back to a customer about a quick question); others of these items would fall into project work (i.e. going through boxes in my garage and getting rid of old materials).   Unfortunately, those things I have deemed "project work" - can keep getting put on the back burner because I perceive them to take a long time to complete.  Here are a few ideas I am implementing to help me move forward in my "to do's':

1.     New York City-based time-management expert Julie Morgenstern, author of Never Check E-mail in the Morning, And Other Unexpected Strategies for Making Your Work Life Work, suggests planning a "three-day arc" that enables you to plan your time, meetings, and to do's that allows room for emergencies or surprises that inevitably arise in our work day.   It's a great resource.

2.     I break my to-do list into 4 quadrants (Work/personal/Calls/Other).  Taking a few moments to think about "high value activities" that need to get done that day can be a time saver and effective for assuring that important things get done.

3.     Take the time to organize!  Being organized is great - you can easily find what you need. Getting organized can be tedious.  Try a 30-minute timer to get through one bit at a time.

Boundless Boosters for your Business

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Neither can go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our relationship, or a bad business decision.  But we always have the choice to move forward.

Here are three "boundless boosters" designed to leap you forward in the area of end of year cleaning:

Jan Business PhotoCompare your achievements with your goals -
How have you met or exceeded what you set out to do?   With the remaining time in the year, what can you realistically get done that will make the most significant difference in your busies? Your relationships? Your family?

Jan Business PhotoAre you GROWing? -
As you reflect upon 2011, assess how you grew in these areas: intellectually (what books did you read?), financially (what did you learn about your finances?); relationally (what relationships did you learn the most from?), and professionally? (What did you learn in your professional field?)

As you assess your growth in these areas - you can discover what you would like to focus on in the next year.

Also GROW is a great way to remember how to achieve what you desire:

G  = Goal  (Write your goal down)
R  = Resources (What resources do you need?)
O =  Obstacles (What obstacles do you anticipate? How do you overcome those obstacles?)
W = Win (Are you taking time to celebrate your Win's?)

Jan Business PhotoSchedule time away -

I said it last year - and I say it again this Fall - this is the perfect time to schedule a day (or a weekend) away where you review your last year and plan for the new year.  Many people do this in the month of January - an ideal time to create goals (not resolutions) and move forward with your dreams!
