Jan Business Photo Message from Jan Dwyer Bang

Boundless greetings to you during this Holiday Season!  This edition will focus on creative ways to move your careers, business, and lives forward.   For so many of us, this past year has been challenging- as we have witnessed a downturn in the economy and with this slowdown, has come the reality of loss of jobs, homes, and the squeezing of budgets.   Perhaps you have experienced hard times yourself.    As we approach the holidays and the end of the year, I thought that a little encouragement, offered in my featured article, could go a long way in how you feel about this past year and look forward to 2011.   And yes, that is me with a real live kangaroo in Arlington, Washington. My husband and I took a day trip to this kangaroo farm - the Outback Christmas Tree & Kangaroo Farm is located in Arlington, WA - and I highly recommend it!  You are up close and personal with a number of wallabies, kangaroos and other exotic animals.

Moving Forward Despite the Setbacks

I recently heard the statement, "A setback is just a set-up!" Indeed many of us can look back on our lives and see how a challenging situation was just a stepping stone to a new opportunity - whether personally or professionally.  Sometimes our vision is so clouded by what we are experiencing that we don't see the positives.  As you know, my tag line in my business is that I help people make great leaps forward at work and life.  So here are some practical ways you can move forward from a setback you may be facing:

In your Career:

If you are in a job - Now more than ever, employers are looking for employees who take initiative, go the extra mile, and have a positive attitude toward their work and their co-workers.  Get involved with networking with people outside of your job.  Take advantage of the company's professional development opportunities.  This is the perfect time to get "tooled up" and take training classes that show you care to grow in your career.
If you are in transition - My Book Real World Career Development Strategies that Work may be ideal for you.  My chapter on finding your passion may be helpful for you as you assess new possibilities.  Get involved in an association affiliated with your profession and build your network since more than 80% of jobs are found  in the "hidden job market."

In Your Business:
Take stock of your product and marketing mix.  Is there a way to rebrand your current products and services?  What about offering your current products to a new customer base?  Or are there opportunities to take advantage of this downturn and create  targeted products and services that meet specific needs?
How is your referral marketing?  One of the ways I've strengthened my business is to focus on building relationships in my local marketplace.

In your Lives:
A downturn presents an incredible opportunity to step back and take stock of what is really important to you.  Revisit your goals (personal, physical, fiscal, emotional, spiritual, and mental) and start thinking about how you can schedule a retreat so that you can create 2011 goals in each of these different areas.  And don't forget to celebrate what you accomplished in 2010!

Boundless Boosters for your Business

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Neither can go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our relationship, or a bad business decision.  But we always have the choice to move forward.

Here are three "boundless boosters" designed to leap you forward in the area of spring cleaning:

Jan Business PhotoCelebrate your accomplishments!
What are you most proud of this year?  Think about your life holistically - career, relationships, spouse, family, friends.  Include your spouse or significant others in your celebration.  What can you celebrate about yourself?  What inner reserves did you tap into that you didn't know you had?

Jan Business PhotoLearn from your mistakes
As you reflect upon 2010, what can you learn from the hard times you experienced?  What would you have done differently?
What goals didn't you accomplish that you wish you had?

Jan Business PhotoSchedule time away

As you are starting to schedule holiday parties and the myriads of activities that this season includes, now is the perfect time to schedule a day (or a weekend) away where you review your last year and plan for the new year.  Many people do this in the month of January - an ideal time to create goals (not resolutions) and move forward with your dreams!
