Message from Jan Dwyer Bang
Happy Spring! We are in the season of Lent - which is the period of the liturgical year leading up to Easter and traditionally, it is a time to prepare ourselves, through prayer, reflection, and sometimes even self-denial, for the Holy Week that includes the death and resurrection of our Savior Jesus Christ. Your denomination (like mine), may not choose to celebrate Lent in the traditional sense but it is my belief that these 40 days is an ideal time we can do some reflection. And what a perfect opportunity for us to do some "spring cleaning" in our spiritual and professional lives. This edition is dedicated to helping you "make room" for God as you work in your ministry and personal and professional lives.

Getting Ourselves out of the Way
Ever feel like if you just got out of the way - God could do a more amazing work in your life? Sometimes the first spring cleaning starts with ourselves - asking the Holy Spirit (minute by minute) to fill us with His wisdom and strength for us to accomplish more than we can ever imagine in our ministries. Sometimes one of the most challenging areas where we need to depend on the Holy Spirit is when we are dealing with people who just "rub us the wrong way." Though Scripture encourages us to "live in peace" with everyone - sometimes relationships can be the most troublesome areas of our lives. As we think of Spring Cleaning, let's talk about some of the ways we can "clean out" some of our attitudes that can be contributing to the situation.
Here are some ways we can clear the way to making things work:
· Be aware of our own negative filters. When we have a problem with someone else, it is very easy to immediately go to the negative when something happens. We see a behavior or even observe an action and we find ourselves assuming the negative - even when we rarely know the "whole story." Next time something happens with our "problem person" - step back and see the situation with fresh eyes. Perhaps we need to ask the Lord to help us see things from that person's eyes - or better yet - from His eyes. · Be clear on our responsibility. I have a running mantra in my mind with problem people in my life. "This is mine - that is their's." Remember -we are responsible to people - but rarely are we responsible for others. When we take on burdens that were never meant for us - we can be weighed down by a lot of negative energy and anxiety. What we are responsible for is our own choices, attitudes, and actions. Other people are responsible for their own choices, attitudes, and actions. Problems occur when we confuse the two. One of the best books on this topic is entitled "Boundaries" by Dr. Henry Cloud and John Townsend. · Be the Solution. Next time you are complaining about your problem person, ask yourself - what percentage of the time am I venting and complaining vs. spending time on finding the solution? Sometimes we've made no room for creative problem solving because we have expended valuable energy and time on complaining about the problem. One of the best ways that I have found that I can "be the solution" - is to better understand the person that I'm having trouble with.
There is a great tool that could be useful for you as you try to understand challenging people in the workplace - it's called the Everything Disc Workplace profile that can be used with everyone in an organization, regardless of title or role, to build more effective relationships, one relationship at a time, and improve the quality of the workplace. For more information on this product, as well as a complete list of all the Inscape Products go to http://www.jandwyer.com/products/inscape.
As Christians, may our attitude be such that the aroma of Christ is what people experience, especially with those troublesome people in our lives.

Boundless Boosters for your Ministry
What do kangaroos and successful people have in common? Neither can go backwards. Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our relationship, or a bad ministry decision. But we always have the choice to move forward.
Here are three "boundless boosters" designed to leap you forward in your life and in this new year:
Don't use excuses - Surely, your ministry has been affected by the economy - but whose hasn't? The last thing we want to do is to make the bad economy (or any number of excuses) be the reasons why we are not thriving. Next time you find yourself blaming something or someone for the less than ideal situation you find yourself in - reframe your mind with the attitude that can propel you to move forward. Instead of "I can't hire any staff with budget cuts," You can say, "What creative things can I do in my team so as to get the work done?" Church leaders need to be examples of taking responsibility - Paul says in 1st Timothy 4:12..."Be an example (pattern) for the believers in speech, in love, in faith, and in purity." (Amplified)
Throw out the old - I hate to admit it - but my garage holds more than 20 boxes of training materials that I have developed and designed that go all the way back to the mid 90's. I have to ask myself - "how much of this is really useful?" Sometimes the best thing we can do in our spiritual and ministry lives is to throw out the old. We can get weighed down with what made us successful in the past and not have "room" for the new. Paul says in Philippians 3:13, "one thing I do (it is my one aspiration): forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead." (Amplified)
Make room for the new - What new technology can you integrate in with what you do that could make a huge impact to your work lives? There is a host of new things to learn and to develop. Is there a class you can attend that could help you be more productive at work? And certainly as important as growth as a leader can be, God is concerned about our growth in study of God's word, increasing our knowledge of God, deepening our faith, showing love, developing Christian character, and by growing and bearing fruit. (Some scriptures include: 1 Peter 2:1-2, Colossians 1:10, Ephesians 4:13, Ephesians 4:15-16, II Peter 1:5-8, Psalms 92:12-15).
