Jan Business Photo Message from Jan Dwyer Bang

Happy new year to you!   I wish you the most boundless of years - rich in relationships and productive in terms of your work lives.

Like so many of you, as a new year is upon us, I envision the kinds of goals I want to accomplish in my business and my personal life.  What a year of endless possibilities!  With this in mind, this edition is focused on ways to make your dreams a reality.  But first, let's not forget about the previous year.  What are you most proud?  How did you do in relation to what you planned?  What surprised you?  And what did you learn?  Personally, this last year was fruitful - in ways that I did not anticipate!  With my fiancé integrally involved, I was engaged, planned for the wedding, and two reception celebrations, and enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon.  My husband John, and I are thrilled with how wonderful our wedding and reception events turned out and our honeymoon in Kauai was beautiful.  And we are still overwhelmed with the amount of support that we had in our journey.  We feel very grateful!

To view a 5 minute video of the wedding taken from my new sister-in-law's cell phone, click here - Jan & John's Big Day 101009

Professionally, my new logo and website launched (check it out at www.JanDwyerBang.com) and though I have a new look and last name - my business philosophy remains the same: Creating boundless results for teams, managers, and staff members in their communications, relationships, and service.

Lessons from It's a Wonderful Life

The Christmas season seems that much more special when you can watch (for perhaps the 100th time!) Frank Capra's movie, It's a Wonderful Life,  starring James Stewart as George Bailey, who spent a lifetime giving up on dreams in order to help the people of Bedford Falls.  He always longed to travel, but never had the opportunity to do so.  When a guardian angle named Clarence saves George from jumping off a bridge, he shows him what life would've been like had he never been born.   It seems contradictory to learn about accomplishments from a character who did not achieve his dreams, but we actually can learn a lot!

Here are five learning's from George Bailey:

1.  Be grateful for what you have.   On Christmas Eve, when everything looked bleak, George Bailey was despondent and even contemplated ending his life.  We too can become hopeless when we lose faith and only see the negatives in our lives.  If 2009 was a hard year for you, you are not alone.  Sometimes the best way to feel energized about the future is to be grateful for what you do have.  Spend some time being thankful for your life, health, family, job, career, or relationships. Sometimes it is the smallest things that we take for granted.  And it is only when we don't have them that we realize how blessed we really are.

2.  Don't underestimate your value.  Like George Bailey, we can dismiss the impact that we have on others around us.  We do make a difference - just our presence can have a positive influence.  Our value is not based on how much money we make or the success that we achieve.  Many of my clients have lost jobs or have had to change their careers.  Money problems, economic stresses, and just the anxiety of not knowing what will happen can cause us to feel powerless to make a difference.  Don't think that you can't make changes in your life.  Approach this upcoming year with some hope and excitement. Don't allow yesterday's mistakes get you down.  Sometimes it is just those bad times that give you valuable lessons to help you deal with new challenges and opportunities.

3.  Our choices affect others.   Certainly one of the take-away's from watching It's a Wonderful Life is that we don't operate in a vacuum.  George's life choices positively impacted his family and the entire community, sometimes at great cost to what he originally wanted.   Indeed, our choices can have ripple effects in our lives, and in the lives of many around us.  As you contemplate your goals for this New Year, it is important to remember that you don't live life alone.  Sit down with your spouse or significant other and talk about your goals.  Share your dreams with your master mind group or like-minded people who are a part of your "dream team."

4.  Our wealth encompasses more than money.   At the end of the day, George discovered the wealth he really had as so many in the community reached out to him and provided him with what he needed.  His wealth was not money but it was in those relationships that he had touched.  As you think about your goals for the new year, expand your definition of success to include more than material accomplishments.  Make sure to allow time for those relationships in your life that add emotional value.

5.  Be willing to be flexible.  George realized that his plans for traveling the world were not realized in the way he had anticipated.  Perhaps his character discovered that he didn't need to travel to experience the richness in life  - with his family, with those who loved him, with standing for his principles.   There are many things in our lives that necessitate us to "tweak" our original goals and plans with changing circumstances.  Be willing to be flexible with your plans since "life" happens.

Boundless Boosters for your Business

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Neither can go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our relationship, or a bad business decision.  But we always have the choice to move forward.

Here are three "boundless boosters" designed to leap you forward in your life and in this new year:
.

Jan Business Photo Never Stop Learning - Learning moments abound don't they? Whether you are reflecting upon what you learned last year or are already experiencing some bumps in this new year, never stop looking at life and circumstances without a learning frame of mind.  If we are constantly learning, we are continually growing and in this type of economy, our ability to learn - about ourselves, from those around us, from books we read, from our mentors or bosses, or teammates, even from our customers, can enable us to achieve our goals.

Jan Business Photo Get Away and Plan - My husband and I have already had 2 personal retreats in 2010 and plan a number of others.  These retreats are focused times of planning - away from emails and phones and the list of daily activities. Our retreats are opportunities for us to plan as a couple our new year.  Sometimes this is the most ideal way to plan - getting away from your computer and turning off the phones and taking the time to sit and think.  It is too easy to get caught up in "life" when we make plans in our current surroundings.

Jan Business PhotoCreate Goals in Several Categories of your Life  - When you plan, think about your life in several "buckets" or "categories."  We may have business and career goals, but I suggest including personal goals, such as exercise, nutrition, relationships, and all those things that can nourish us spiritually and emotionally.  Our ability to get refreshed can enable us to achieve what we want out of our lives.
