A New Breed
What kind of workers will be successful in today's economy? Those who are willing to take risks. And yet every day we are bombarded with so much "noise" and negative news that can leave us straight-jacketed. We become paralyzed, insulated, and in survival mode. What can we do to stand apart from the crowd?
- Staying positive. It seems like nay-sayers are a dime a dozen right now! How many times has negative news propelled you forward? Unusually, it pulls me down! Negativity can thwart my efforts - how about you? Have you ever noticed that negativity can spill out in all areas of our lives? Be aware of your own language and speech. Watch what you say about others. Watch what you say to yourself. How many times are you saying "I can't" vs. "I will" or "It can't be done," vs "Let's try it out?" Staying positive can arm you with hope and forward momentum.
- Keeping the human connections. Yes, we should all be familiar with social networking (LinkedIn, Face book, MySpace, Twitter) - and yet it is the connection - person to person - and human to human that makes us alive. Try structuring your day with some form of human connection - a five minute phone call with a friend or loved one can help you remember why you are doing all this work-and why!
- Getting re-tooled. This is the time to take that class, learn that skill, and enhance your expertise in your field or perhaps outside your field. With my work in outplacement and career development, I have seen time and again the resilience that people have when they lose their jobs. Some go to school; others go develop new skills in their field. If you are working, don't just PIT (Put in time) - endeavor to learn and grow. Take advantage of your company's professional development opportunities. Later this year, I'll be launching my teleseminar series. This may be an excellent opportunity for you to learn some skills without leaving your desk. So many times organizations and governmental agencies cut back on training in a downturn when they should be doing just the opposite - empowering staff and leaders to learn new skills to stay competitive.

Boundless Boosters for your Business
What do kangaroos and successful people have in common? Neither can go backwards. Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, or a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our lives.
Yes, it is a fact that kangaroos don't go backwards. And you don't have to either. Here is one "boundless booster" designed to leap you forward in your life:
Hug Bootsie - What's a Bootsie you ask? Someone who loves you unconditionally - for me - Bootsie happens to be my cat. For others, it is a dog or anything furry. Even now as I'm writing this edition, Bootsie has climbed up in my lap and her purring is something that adds a beautiful dimension to my day. For some, it is simply to take a walk - getting away from your computer and office and enjoying nature. For others, it is talking to and hugging a loved one. There is probably nothing more important than enjoying the "Bootsie's" of our lives, especially during this downturn. |
