Too Much Baggage

I've been thinking a lot about baggage lately.  Traveling as much as I do, I've had to readjust my own paradigms of what I really need to take on business trips.  Initially, it took some time and effort to sort through what were my "necessities" but now, after having experienced how much simpler travel can be without checking bags, I will most likely never go back to lugging more things than I need.   What about you?  Some of us are carrying around extra pounds of negative energy that weigh us down and keep us stifled.   Sometimes by stepping back and reassessing our assumptions, we can discover things that get in the way. I recently fired a staff person whose dependability was becoming less reliable.  What a weight off my mind!   And no more draining of my energy!  When we don't step back and reassess, we can find ourselves falling into these insidious traps:

  • Taking the quickest route - A CEO, upon hearing about a new method to provide job equity in performance appraisals, squelched the creativity and initiative of her direct reports by impulsively imposing a simplistic solution.  The result?  A deflated staff and a solution that did not prove to be the most equitable for all involved.  A few moments of asking questions and getting clarification may take longer, but will save us on possible negative consequences later on.
  • Blaming the economy - Wow, this trap can be insidious. Sure things are slow for some of us but so many of us can use this as a reason for us to not market or focus on what we can do.  We can always blame something or someone.  And we can use tough times to NOT take necessary action too. I frequently hear of managers who refuse to fire underperformers.   Not firing an underperformer for any reason, including your concern for that person's welfare in this challenging economy, can affect productivity, demoralize your team, and undermine your credibility as a manager.  When you find yourselves blaming, start looking in the mirror.   Usually the face looking back at you is at least part of the problem!
  • Being busy - Some of us are so busy doing "busy" work that we never get to accomplishing activities that really move our lives forward.  One of the classes I teach helps people use Outlook more effectively.
One tip that will help you work more focused involves turning off your email notifications and task reminders.  Another tip is to only check your email at certain set aside times in your day so that you can focus on what matters most to you.

Boundless Boosters for your Business

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Both cannot go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our work groups, a leadership challenge that keeps us up at night. But the difference is that successful people are able to "break through" and learn from what happens to them.  After all, why not get as much out of a "bad situation" as you can?  Yes, it is a fact that kangaroos don't go backwards.  And you don't have to either.

Here is one "boundless booster" designed to leap you forward in life.

roo bullet pointTake Ten.  Some of us don't move forward because we feel that we "don't have time." Take ten simply means that carve out 10 minutes each day on a goal that isn't reactive, and a goal that doesn't involve immediate gratification.  This tip enables you to focus on goals that can make a significant difference to your long-term goals. What is one thing that you can do today in 10 minutes that could significantly affect your sense of productivity?

Check out my new BLOG - I focus on some of the most prevalent issues that affect people's productivity.
