Message from Jan Dwyer

I am hoping that your 2008 is going well and the Lord is very active in your ministry and in your lives.  It is hard to believe we are halfway through 2008! Here are some questions to ask as we reflect upon the first 6 months of the year.  Is your staff feeling supported and affirmed? How is the Lord working in and through your team and ministry?  What new treasure from God's word is God showing you that can apply to your work and life?  This 3rd edition will focus on the importance of authenticity and intentionality - in our ministries and lives.

What do Cirque Du Soleil and one of the fastest growing churches in America have in common?  At first glance - perhaps nothing.  But a closer look at both reveals that each of them can teach us a lot in the way we serve the Lord in our respective ministries.

In April, I had the opportunity of attending a presentation and performance lab by the National Speakers Association in Las Vegas. One of the presenters was Richard Oberacker, the first American director Cirque De Soleil has ever had. Those of you who have had the joy of attending a Cirque Du Soleil performance can attest to the sheer magnitude of the talent of the performers and the almost awe-inspiring experience.  What captures the audience is what Richard calls "truth." In his words, "Everything that occurs in performing arts comes from the concept of truth.  The best art helps the audience step inside the performance and fully experience the event themselves in a very truthful way."  When he directs the actors in a performance, he helps each actor be truthful so that the audience believes what is being felt, experienced, and said.  It is not just the acrobatic skill of the performers but every glance, every movement, and every action needs to be "believable."

In fact, the actual story line of each show is secondary to the audience experiencing the story in a way where each person can step into their own story. What is the result?  An unforgettable, magical experience!

  • In your ministries, as you interact with your donors, customers, and even each other, is your faith in the Lord "believable?"
  • Do your actions and attitudes express what you say you are committed to?
It is a shame that so many Christians don't want to work in a Christian organization or ministry setting because of their fear of being hurt by their brothers and sisters in the Lord. As Bob Seiple, Former President of World Vision used to say, "It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of Christians." Let this never be in our ministry! We can guard against this by consistently asking the Lord to help us "live out our faith" so that our walk with the Lord is ever fresh, authentic and radiant.

Recently, I attended a Real Life Ministries conference in Post Falls, Idaho. Jim Putnam, who serves as Senior Pastor and his pastoral team, have seen their church grow to over 8,000 members in less than 8 years. How did they do it?  Certainly all glory goes to the Lord and if you talk with any of the leaders of the church, they would say that any success is all because of God's favor and grace.  However, they would also share that their church, from the very beginning, has been intentional in the command of Jesus to make disciples.  As Jim Putnam says, "God did not call us to make converts, but rather, to make disciples," and so every decision the leadership makes is filtered through the lens of making disciples. In short, Real Life Ministries is intentional in their mission.

  • How intentional is your ministry?
  • Is every team member absolutely committed to a targeted purpose?
  • Does every staff member even know what your mission's ministry purpose and vision is?
Ken Blanchard shares a story about the Make-A-Wish Foundation where every staff member, from senior management to the landscaping crew, knows how his job fits into the mission.  When a sick child walks through the grounds, the landscaper shuts off his mower so that the child and the family can enjoy the grounds in peace. That is an organization dedicated to living out its mission!

One of the services I provide clients is to help as a service consultant in equipping ministries and organizations with services, resources and training and consulting.  A 1 to 3 year journey allows organizations to have "staying power" so as to literally transform a ministry with average service or ministry potential to a ministry that consistently exhibits God's best to the world.

Boundless Boosters for your Business

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Both cannot go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our work groups, a leadership challenge that keeps us up at night. But the difference is that successful people are able to "break through" and learn from what happens to them.  After all, why not get as much out of a "bad situation" as you can?  Yes, it is a fact that kangaroos don't go backwards.  And you don't have to either.

Here are two "boundless boosters" designed to leap you forward in life.

roo bullet pointAssess your own Service   In my fall issue, we talked about creating a culture of service - but this booster focuses on you personally. How are you doing in providing great service?  What are you doing personally to maintain an attitude of service to anyone you meet?  What do you do when you don't feel like focusing on other people - particularly if that person is a disgruntled customer, a demanding co-worker, or an exasperating boss?

roo bullet pointAct as if you are  C.S. Lewis says, "Very often the only way to get a quality in reality is to start behaving as if you had it already.  When you are not feeling particularly friendly, but know you ought to be, the best thing you can do very often is to put on a friendly manner and behave as if you were feeling more tolerant than you really do feel that day.  And in a few minutes, as we have all noted, you will be really friendlier than you were."  Though I'm not a big fan of the adage, "Fake it until you make it," this method works wonders!  I tried it myself a number of times and ended up feeling happier because of the response of the person I was talking with.
