A happy fall to you!  This season is rich with vibrant leaves, crisper temperatures and a cacophony of color - the environment prompts us to enjoy life!  Much like what happens when an organization creates a culture of open and honest communication.  People enjoy their jobs and each other when they engage in communication that builds trust.  This edition will explore the benefits of assertive communication and the transformation that occurs when staff members are able to assert themselves more confidently in their teams.

Assertive Communication

One of the most transformational classes that I am privileged to teach is my 2-day assertive communication class. Assertiveness is not rude but rather, a direct, honest, and appropriate expression of one's own thoughts and feelings and opinions.  Participants learn how freeing it is to say what they mean which in turn enhances mutual respect and leads to "unclouded" communication.  Regardless of whether you are a manager or staff member, these skills will increase your ability to engage in communication that respects others as well as yourself:

Be clear on what you want - Many people aren't assertive because they are not clear on what they want or need.  Some people have not given themselves permission to express a want or need for fear of getting it ignored.  Assertiveness all starts with choice - and the first choice you can make is to decide to be assertive - regardless if anyone approves of you or not.  Start with baby steps and at the next staff meeting, share an idea or opinion.  If you are a manager, step more into your authority by asserting yourself with your staff members.  Make the choice today to start living your life free from other people's expectations.

Review your beliefs -Many people aren't assertive because they feel they don't have anything of value to say. What beliefs are keeping you from asserting yourself?  The belief that you don't matter? That your opinion doesn't count?   Choose instead, these beliefs that support assertiveness:  I matter. My opinion counts.  What I say matters.

Develop a support community - When people attempt to change ingrained habits that have been a part of their life, they need support.  One of the best ways you can create support for your staff is to sponsor learning events that help people learn in community.  After your staff completes the assertiveness class,  consider sponsoring lunch-and-learn sessions so that people can share best practices and success stories.   Rick Warren's latest book, Better Together: What on Earth Are We Here For? points out that the word "support" means "lend strength to."  How appropriate since this is exactly what these learning events and communities can provide for each other!  Another way you can provide support is to take a look at how your systems are aligned with the principles of direct, honest communication. Is feedback a part of your culture? How are decisions being communicated to your staff?  Are staff members being told the truth during their evaluation meetings? Do people have an incentive to change to a more assertive style?

Boundless Boosters for your Business

What do kangaroos and successful people have in common?  Both cannot go backwards.  Sure we all have our moments, hours, even days when things seem to be going backwards - whether it is a rejection from one of our best customers, a communication misunderstanding that is causing havoc in our work groups, a leadership challenge that keeps us up at night. But the difference is that successful people are able to "break through" and learn from what happens to them.  After all, why not get as much out of a "bad situation" as you can?  Yes, it is a fact that kangaroos don't go backwards.  But you don't have to.

Here are three "boundless boosters" related to communication that will help you and your staff leap forward:

roo bullet pointKeep communication open and communicate often. If you are a supervisor, model clear communication with your staff.   If you are a leader, share honestly some obstacles you have that can prevent you from being honest with others.  Gather success stories and make sure to share these with your staff. Every time there is a leadership meeting with decisions that affect the staff, let your team or department know what was discussed and how the change affects them.

roo bullet pointInvolve the staff!  One of the ways you can engage your staff to the benefits of assertive communication is by forming cross-functional teams with committed staff members who share ideas.   If your organization has core values related to open communication, allow your staff to suggest and implement ideas to better create a culture that helps employees more easily live the values.

roo bullet pointEmploy a coaching model in communicating with staff.  A command and control communication style saps the energy and vitality right out of a team or an organization. Rather, hone your coaching skills to help employees express their feelings and have their thoughts acknowledged and validated.   A great book on coaching is called Co-Active Coaching by Laura Whitworth, Karen Kimsey-House, Henry Kimsey-House, and Phillip Sandahl.  The intent with coaching is to leave the power of decisions in the hands of your staff members, and by employing the skills of active listening and asking powerful questions, you can help expand a person's ability to make decisions for themselves. This frees you up to lead!
