Six Ways to Avoid Emotional Eating

When stressed out or anxious, some people turn to food as a way to comfort themselves. However, what may be soothing at the time can make you feel worse - and weigh more - in the end. If you tend to turn to food as a way to cope with a stressful situation, consider the following nutritional tips:

  • Don't drink caffeine or alcohol (and don't smoke) when stressed. These can heighten or prolong your anxiety and worsen its side effects.
  • Drink plenty of water - between six and eight glasses per day. This can help quell the pangs of an empty stomach and promote a healthy digestive system.
  • Keep your blood sugar levels stable by eating several small, nutritious meals rather than three large ones.
  • Make sure your meals or snacks incorporate omega-3 fatty acids. Include walnuts, salmon and freshly ground flaxseeds into your diet.
  • Incorporate foods rich in magnesium, which helps relax muscles, into your diet. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables, nuts and seeds are good sources.
  • Above all, be aware of your eating habits. If you find yourself eating to combat stress, limit yourself to small portions, enough so you can savor the taste or texture. Then go for a walk or practice meditating: both are proven, healthier ways to address stress.

At Saylor Medical we can teach you techniques that have proven to be extremely effective in stopping emotional eating.  Stress control is very important in losing and maintaining a healthy weight.  Call today to find out how you can quickly get you stress under control.  727-938-9966

Report: Excess Body Fat Linked To Cancer
Staying slim, avoiding processed meats and alcohol lowers risk, study finds
The following is a summary of the report
LONDON - Keeping slim is one of the best ways of preventing cancer, as is avoiding excessive amounts of red meat and wine, a landmark study has revealed.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) said the link between body fat and cancer is closer than generally realized.

It found convincing evidence of a link to six types of cancer, five more than in its last report, 10 years ago. Among the new types are colorectal (bowel) and post-menopausal breast cancer.

Professor Michael Marmot, chair of the panel of 21 eminent scientists who compiled the report, said: "We are recommending that people aim to be as lean as possible within the healthy range, and that they avoid weight gain throughout adulthood."

The report, which selected 7,000 studies from a worldwide pool of 500,000 written since records began in the 1960s, includes five key findings.

Processed meats, alcohol
They are that processed meats, such as ham and bacon, increase the risk of colorectal cancer, and should be eaten sparingly.

Another is the link between red meat and colorectal cancer, for which the evidence is stronger than ever. People should not eat more than 500g (17 ounces) of cooked red meat a week.

A further finding was the strongest evidence yet that alcohol is a cause of cancer. If people must drink, the report said, they should limit their intake to two units a day for a man or one for a woman. A unit is a half pint of beer or a small glass of wine.

"This report is a real milestone in the fight against cancer, because its recommendations represent the most definitive advice on preventing cancer that has ever been available anywhere in the world," said Professor Martin Wiseman, project director of the report.

Reducing risk
Scientists believe there are several reasons for the link between body fat and cancer.

One is the relationship between excess fat and the hormonal balance in the body. Research has shown that fat cells release hormones such as estrogen, which increases the risk of breast cancer, while fat around the waist encourages the body to produce growth hormones, which can increase levels of risk.

Evidence of a link is most convincing for cancer of the esophagus, pancreas, colorectum, endometrium (womb), kidney and post-menopausal breast cancer.

The report makes 10 recommendations including 30 minutes of moderate activity a day, rising to 60 minutes; drinking water rather than sugary drinks; eating fruit, vegetables and fiber and limiting salt consumption.
Five Fast Food Suggestions
Even if you are diligent about packing healthful foods when traveling, or finding restaurants with nutritious choices when eating out, there may be times when your healthy dining options are limited. While we suggest you avoid eating fast food entirely, if you must, please keep the following in mind when ordering:
  • No matter how hungry you are, you are better off ordering a small amount of food and making up for it with healthier foods later. Don't super-size or add on items.
  • Opt out of cheese and mayonnaise, both of which can add unnecessary calories and fat. Instead, pile on lettuce, tomato and other vegetables, if possible.
  • Toss the bun or at least half of it.
  • Avoid anything deep-fried. From chicken to potatoes to onions, deep-fried foods contain altered fats that are detrimental to the body.
  • If you order a salad, choose the low-fat dressing, and add sparingly. One serving of full-fat dressing can be equal to the amount of fat in a cheeseburger!
  • Finally, ask to see a list of the nutritional content of menu items. Some restaurants have them posted - if they don't, ask for them, and ask yourself if you really want to eat there!
