"Before speaking, T-H-I-N-K:

Is it True?

Is it Helpful?

Is it Inspiring?

Is it Necessary?

Is it Kind?"

-Barbara Moses, Philadelphia Mennonite High School principal, in an address at Mennonite Health Assembly, March 2009
Coming in timbrel

Don't miss the next issue of timbrel which focuses on Seasons of Marriage.  It is our hope that this issue will facilitate older women sharing some of their wisdom on this topic with younger women in the church. Those who are single, widowed, divorced, or remarried can all benefit from the stories in this issue, so we may all work together as women strengthening marriages within the church.

SuterIn the May/June issue, Donna Brunk Suter shares a bit about forgiveness following a spouse's infidelity. While we don't like to think so, researchers find infidelity is so common, especially in younger people's marriages, and rising precipitously among women. The data is no different for evangelicals than for the secular population, which indicates the church is failing its young people, especially its young women, in a significant way.

Barbara Reed shares a new season of marriage she is beginning with her spouse who has Alzheimer's disease (pictured right). Indeed, caring for a spouse as couples age is a reality many of us do not wish to acknowledge, yet it is quite common. Also in this issue Kirsten Klassen shares a personal experience in which she and two other married women discuss what-to-expect information with a friend soon to be married. This, too, is something that would be beneficial in our churches.

In preparation for the next issue on "Kitchen Table Theology," consider:

As women visit and share our stories informally with one another, we often share our faith journeys; this is kitchen table theology. How have you participated in such informal exchanges that have had a positive impact?

Send response to Patty by May 5.

Chatter, Chow, and Cheerful Service
 Chatter
With quarts of vegetable beef soup brought by participants and mixed together a once-in-a-lifetime pot, women and girls from Atlantic Coast (ACC) and Lancaster Conferences gathered at the MCC Material Resource Center in Akron, Pa., for the sixth annual Chatter, Chow, and Cheerful Service event. The women's gathering shared about their ministry through a video conference with the ACC and Eastern District area conference meeting happening on the same day. (See TV screen in photo.)

T-shirts were cut into rags, kit bags were filled, comforters knotted, and quilts quilted - cheerful service with lots of chatter and unforgettable chow.

"Nighty-Night"

-a prayer remembered by Esther Keener's ten children at her funeral in March 2009. Esther lived in Lancaster, Pa. and died at the age of 91. Shared by daughter-in-law, Rhoda Keener.

Nighty-night, yes nighty-night.

Up come the covers, out goes the light.

Mother dear will put a kiss

on each little cheek, just like this.

Nighty-night, yes nighty-night.

Jesus is with you; close your eyes tight.

He will keep you in his sight

Safe until the morning light.
