Bubba's Networking Corner

Networking effectively means building a relationship. This means finding a connection between you and the other person. Find a need and connect the person with a possible solution. Many times the solution comes from someone you know and not directly from you. The goal is to find the solution to as many needs as you can.

5 Secrets to Attracting (and Keeping) True Followers to Your Business
The article I originally wrote for you changed when a mad gunman opened fire at a Safeway in Tucson. Almost before the gunman was subdued and taken into custody, the injured whisked away for treatment, the mourning for the dead begun, the tears wiped and the shock somewhat eased, the deconstruction of the tragedy in the press began.

The Sheriff blamed the media. Republicans blamed the Democrats. Democrats blamed the Republicans. Pundits of all sorts pointed fingers of blame at vicious campaign words; words that cut as deep a swatch across our country as a single bullet cut through a vibrant congresswoman's brain.

Enough. We cannot change the past. We can, however, learn from it.

Many will dissect the Tucson tragedy; people who are tasked with making laws will do so. Alterations will be made by those we entrust to enact change. And what about the rest of us? What lessons can we take away? Are there changes on a lesser scale that we can enact?

At the risk of being accused of diminishing a tragedy, let's bring this back into the realm of what is possible, back to the world where our choices can make a difference.

You are growing a business. Online, home-based, local retail, bricks-n-mortar service-the type of business is not as important as is the fact that you are doing it; your business exists so that people who are really interested in what you have to offer will find you and take advantage of what you have to sell. One hopes that you are passionate about your business, but that's a topic for another day. Did you catch the key phrase in what I've said so far? People who are really interested in what you offer.  These are your true followers, the customers who will stick with you, the kind of customer in whom you can and should invest.

A lot of importance is put on the list, on creating networks and working our networks-with good reason. A healthy, happy, and growing network of customers, of true followers and potential customers has a direct effect on your financial bottom line.  This kind of customer equity is invaluable.

How do you attract true followers to your business? I have a few thoughts on that.

Trust in your passion

I know, I said that would be another day's topic. But, when it comes to your business, you've got to love it or it never really works out.

Value People's Time

So, you've been frustrated by the cable guy, right? Give some thought to how you feel when your time is not respected; when your preferences are ignored. Don't return the favor; treat your customers' time better than you treat your own time. Make the process of buying from you easy, uncomplicated, and pleasant.

Don't Promise if you Can't Deliver

If your product is tangible, then keep the quality up. If your product is service, make it the best experience your customer has ever had.

And please, let's not forget what might be the most important lesson we can take away from the events in Tucson-be kind to each other.

Loosen Your Focus

There is no doubt that it takes a tight focus to be successful in business. This is a good thing. And yet...balance is equally good. Your customer, no matter your product, is ultimately buying the expertise that rises out of your years of tunnel vision. Take care. Focus without balance is obsession. Go on vacation with your family. Volunteer for a local charity. Learn to dance....you get the idea.

Join a mastermind group

Interact with the world outside of your business. A mastermind group exposes you to cutting edge business ideas and divergent points of view. A mastermind group provides a safe environment for brainstorming, for problem solving, for critique, for strategic planning, for business help that could cost you thousands in consulting fees otherwise, and outside accountability. A trusted outsider may spot what you miss by being too close or too focused. Often simply talking about a problem within a mastermind group will open your mind to innovation that eluded you until then.

As business owners, we serve our true followers. And if we don't pay attention to what those true followers need from us, we don't stay in business. Trust. Value. Deliver. Focus. Interact. These are the secrets to attracting and keeping true followers to your business. Are you using all five?

Maximize Profits Using a Virtual Assistant
Karen Schatzby Karen Schatz, Virtually With You

As a solopreneur or small business owner, you have probably struggled with (and maybe pulled out a few hairs over) how to play all roles necessary for managing and running your business successfully.

You are the service/product provider, business strategist, marketing expert, web developer, cart manager, bookkeeper, administrator, etc.  You've learned to do all of these jobs but have mastered none very well and that's because your time is divided in too many directions.  You are spread too thin.  How you really want to spend your time is by providing your services, selling your products and generating revenue.  You would happily hand over these other "hats" to other people but the quandary is "who" do you hand them over to?

At some point, you may have decided to hire an employee only to find out that you now have to manage their time and work tasks, provide them with benefits, manage payroll (which requires more administrative tasks - UGH!), and you may even have decided that you want them to work out of your home office space where you now have to provide them with the proper equipment necessary to fulfill their duties.  So, instead of sharing the roles to alleviate the pain, you have effectively created more work and more aggravation for yourself.

Luckily, there is a better choice that is growing in popularity ... outsourcing to a qualified Virtual Assistant.  A Virtual Assistant is "a professional independent contractor who provides expertise, skill and assistance to other professionals to help them build their business and generate more revenue."  Virtual Assistants (also known as VAs) operate on a professional level and "partner" relationally with their clients to bring expertise and skills they already possess to the partnership.  You do not need to payroll your VA nor do you need to manage her/his time.  VAs work independently from their own home office and use their own equipment.

If you haven't considered working with a VA, you should.  Outsourcing projects and tasks that are weighing you down will free you up to focus on the areas of your business that only you can provide and will allow you to generate revenue for your business, thereby maximizing your profits.  As an added benefit, working with a VA in a collaborative and long-term relationship will give you freedom you never realized you could experience.
