A Very Different Valentine's Day
Imagine this ... it's Valentine's Day and I'm sharing it with 12 individuals I don't know - who just happen to be homeless. Not very romantic, is it? No, it isn't but it is very rewarding ... for me that is.
Every winter, my church provides shelter for one week to give the homeless a respite from the cold harsh winter (and we have had a heck of a winter with over 54" of snow falling in the past 8 weeks). We call this program Safe Nights and it requires volunteers like myself to spend either the evening or the night with these individuals to ensure that they have a meal to eat, a hot shower to clean up and a warm and safe place to lay their head.
The shift I chose was from 11pm to 7am and it was my job to stay awake all night in case anyone needed anything, plus it gave the other volunteers a chance to sleep since they had been there all day. Given that I can be a bit of a night owl, it wasn't difficult for me to stay up all night. Besides, good movies and good company can make it quite enjoyable ... (oh, did I forget to tell you that I shared this evening with my honey who also has a heart for serving others?).
In the morning, I had the opportunity to greet these folks with a smile and offer them some breakfast or coffee. There were men and women from many stages in life ... a young couple expecting their first child, two young single 20-something women and 8 single men ranging in ages from 30-something to 60-something. So what went through my mind was "what has brought them to this place in life?" and "what will it take to bring them out of this place?"
I can't say that I have answers to those questions but it did provide me with the opportunity to reflect on how blessed I am to have a career that allows me to volunteer my time by serving others who have a need. This servant-hearted quality comes naturally to me.
So, what does this story have to do with being a Virtual Assistant? As a VA, I am in the business of serving others. It is my job to make sure that my clients' administrative needs are met and their expectations exceeded. It's my job to listen to their ideas and to implement them. It is also my job to celebrate their successes and comfort them during the times when they feel low.
As I have worked with business owners, I have become aware that businesses have a tendency to flourish or produce more results as they have identified ways to give back to their clients or communities. If you would like to explore these ideas together, feel free to contact me.

Little Boy Running
I was at a Starbucks the other day in a strip mall and got the thrill of the week from a toddler with a brand new ability - running.
He was outside and I watched him through the window...tirelessly running up and down the sidewalk while his mother monitored him from her table on the sidewalk. He'd race down to the end and turn around.
Then he'd ball up his little fists, bring them up to his side in a running pose, and then lurch forward, taking a few awkward steps before he got up to speed and ran back down to mom.
Wheat-gold hair, bright red shirt, blue-jean shorts and obviously new shoes ("I'll be faster in these!"), just running up to a spot on the sidewalk, stopping to feel the excitement, and then running back. And again, all the time with this incredible expression on his face like it was all brand new, and it was the best thing ever!
No holding back, just ripping along enjoying the speed and his ability to run. His tongue sticking out in fierce concentration, then a big smile on his face as he turned and saw his momma watching.
I couldn't hear her, but I could imagine her words and voice helping him find the joy in all of it..."You're so fast!"
People got in his way and he actually ran into a few...bounced off and kept going. Didn't worry about how fast he was actually going, or whether he was beating anyone else, or whether he was supposed to be running there...just running and feeling the pleasure of the act, no thought at all for anything around him.
Hey...you.
Stop worrying so much about what people will think. Stop worrying that you'll bump some people. Stop worrying about getting it just right or going fast enough.
Look down at your new shoes (the marketing thingy you just learned, or the connections you just made, or the idea for a new way to get someone's attention) and BELIEVE, like a 3-year old, that you'll be faster in these.
And then just run. Stick your tongue out, ball up your little fists, and go. Enjoy it! And when you stop and turn back, smile! You're doing it! You're fast and you ARE doing it.
Don't stop. Bounce off people that get in your way. Listen to encouragement and absolutely ignore discouragement (especially from inside yourself).
Run!

Skin Facts 101: Become a Smart Product Consumer
A good percentage of consumers will believe the information printed on a label of their favorite lotion, potion or cream. What you read is not always what you get! Take the time to look up the products you buy. Does the website support marketing claims of all natural or so-called organic ingredients...where are you getting confirmation about the benefits claimed? Ask yourself "Is this marketing research or marketing hype?"
In most cases, many consumers never bother to do their homework and verify the claims made by their favorite cosmetic products.
Be a smart savvy shopper. Take the time to log into a company's web page and find out if there are any scientific documents, third party or controlled studies showing results to back their claims. Or even use an independent source such as www.totalbeauty.com If your products claim ALL natural, check out the source. If your products claim to have certain miracle skin changing ingredients, ask yourself where's the data to back it.
Be smart, do your homework. Did you know that most products that claim to have some miracle ingredient only have to have 0.1% to claim it? Did you know that over half the so called natural products had some synthetic material...No??? Did you know there is a big difference between 'Dermatologist tested' and 'recommended'?
As to my credentials, I manufactured cosmetics and personal brands for over 10 years. I was a project coordinator, oversaw quality control on production, reviewed new raw materials with vendors for the latest in new technology and did the research/marketing write-ups on various well-known brands.
I have had my own skin care issue. My biggest issue was with cystic acne (it's a hard painful infected bump under the skin's surface, that doesn't form to a regular white head). This type of acne usually is around the chin, and lower cheek area. It is usually hormonal and very hard to get rid of. Most women get this type later in life usually around age 30-something. Mine started at 36, up until then I had flawless skin. First, it started out with a bump here or there but as I aged, it became 2-5 break outs at a time. It left me with scars no matter if I attempted to pop them or not.
I did seek lots of help. I saw the best dermatologist, used the natural supplements, took antibiotics, I used the skin care you see being pushed on TV by certain celebrities; Jessica Simpson & PDiddy (we won't mentioned names) used injections (very painful) and used various topicals. Nothing worked. At age 43, it was really becoming a nuisance and unsightly. My current dermatologist who had exhausted all traditional and some natural treatments, finally looked into my tearing eyes and informed me that Accutan was about my only option left.
Now if any of you have done your homework, not only do you have to have two forms of birth control and sign a waiver but the side effects are very scary.
I declined...but don't lose hope...I actually found a "REAL Solution", now I know you're wondering what it is, you're perhaps asking yourself, what does she use???
