Sunny Days and Blue Skies
| | Amazonite Cuff Bracelet |
In most parts of the world, when it says summer on the calendar it means blue skies and sunny days. Well, I've learned, after living the Pacific Northwest for a few years now that just because the word "summer" is printed on a calendar doesn't make it so. No matter what Mother Nature says - I have always thought that summer officially begins on June 1st - must be a mindset from my school days as a kid - when we couldn't wait for summer vacation to start. (To this day I feel sorry for kids that go to school year-round. I do understand the thinking behind the policy; but I still think it takes out the fun of it all.) Living in New York City for several years - the Memorial Day weekend was the official start of summer; and one of the best east coast ideas, "summer Fridays." For those of you who are not familiar with this tradition - from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, the majority of businesses in NYC operate with skeleton crews

after noon on Fridays, thus (did I just say "thus") allowing people to get out of the city and head for the beach or the country. Now that sounds like fun for some. Me? I'm afraid my weekends have always been a bit lackluster (at least in the eyes of others) since I have always been a homebody so my weekends were enjoyed in the quiet city.
On another note, for me, summer is a time to lighten and brighten up your fashions a bit. While designers are showing color, color and more color in clothing, I have always had a struggle trying to wear an orange top or a bright blue (yes, to me blue is bright) maxi-dress. Maybe you are a bit like me and in jeans, khakis, or white jeans (yes, I do), you don't have to ignore color completely - in fact, you can flaunt it in your jewelry. Adding colorful jewelry to your closet is a fun way to get new

looks from existing wardrobe staples. While it might be tempting to buy disposable jewelry for the summer season; if you know where to look and shop you can find real gemstones in well-made handcrafted pieces that you won't toss when the summer season ends. Because they are real gemstones and quality materials you can add them to your collection and in most cases, if you treat them like fine, the majority of pieces will last you a lifetime. I love mixing the gemstone pieces in my collection with sterling silver or gold pieces I have gathered over a lifetime of collecting. And, when you are tempted by the street vendor and buy a stack of bangles for three dollars, those bangles immediately move into a different category when they are layered with unique one-of-a-kind jewelry. That's what makes it all so much fun. I hope the ideas highlighted here will set your creative mind on hyperdrive. |

Blue Chalcedony & Eagle Eye Agate Bracelet
|
I love chalcedony. But unlike many designers, I love the pieces that contain the white streaks that give the gemstone personality. Case in point -- the nuggets on this bracelet. Something about this bracelet makes me think of lace. This design says "confident" yet it is still very soft and feminine. I like that. The eagle eye agate is one of my all time favorites in the agate category and very difficult to find. The smaller coins in this design are the perfect proportion and punctuate the nuggets and Czech glass beads perfectly. |

Chevron Amethyst & Freshwater Pearl Stretch Bracelet
|

Not a very romantic name for this beautiful gemstone; but it is what it is. The puffed pillow beads are translucent in spots, with shots of white and deeper purple throughout. Sparked with the Czech fire-polished glass round beads and freshwater baroque pearls it really is a feminine look but in a bold way. Why not add a charm or two that will long remind you of your summer days? |

Coral & Turquoise & Snow Quartz Soft Bangle
|
| |
Oh so pretty - the colors of coral, turquoise with a smattering of silver. Says "summer" to me; actually it says "wear me all the time!" As you know by now, I just love these bead rope soft bangle design bracelets. Several reasons, I suppose. First, the technique I use to make them is inspired by the women in Nepal - they are well-known for doing this style of craftsmanship. Second, I was inspired many years ago on a little stroll through Bergdorf's jewelry department when I saw a world-class designer selling similar styles for not so similar prices. And, third I love the fact that they are designed to roll right over your hand and on to the wrist. No clasp - no need to ask that cute guy in the elevator to help you with your bracelet. Hm-m-m maybe that's a drawback? You be the judge. |

Citrine, Crystal Quartz & Freshwater Pearl Sterling Silver Necklace
|
| |
I am constantly amazed at jewelry makers who can name each of their designs -- something in my brain is just not wired to do that, I guess. So I rely on simply naming the gemstones, or glass or chain designs hoping that it takes nothing away from the overall effect. This drop charm style necklace makes me think of sunshine and the beach -- citrine and pearls. Try mixing it up and wearing the drop on a colored cord -- looks very pretty that way, too. A bit of sunshine no matter what the weather is outside your window. |

Starfish & Natural Shell Bracelet
|
| |
"I wish they all could be California girls." Classic Beach Boys comes to mind when I think of my youth and the beach. Now you can share in the memories with this whimsical ode to all things beachy. Cloisonné starfish in light pink, lime green and rusty-red are partnered with ivory Czech glass pearls and everlasting natural shells in the buff. Everlasting? Yeah, just the opposite of that summer romance that didn't last past sunset! |

| | Red, White & Blue "In Honor" Soft Bangle |
Of course, it wouldn't be summer without our traditional red, white and blue, now would it? July 4th - the day we celebrate the birth of our country and remember those who had, and have, the courage and the strength to continue to help make it the great place that it is. I hope you all have a fabulous and fun holiday weekend. Does this officially mark the middle of summer? Not sure...but from parades down Main Street and rodeos in small towns all around the country to Macy's Fireworks extravaganza in New York City, I hope wherever you are you make it spectacular as well.
