Opulent Opaque Gemstones or Rocks in my Head?
| | Kyanite & Freshwater Pearl Necklace |
Honestly, sometimes when I am working in the jewelry studio I think I'm nuts. Why? You ask. Well, let's see; is it normal for a person to actual gasp when she sees a piece of pietersite? Does a sane person swoon over kyanite or labradorite? Does a woman with even a modicum of commonsense get giddy over a pile of rocks? Honestly, I'm not sure. But I do know this - what other people might see as just rocks, I see as opulent opaque gemstones in so many varieties that no one person has counted or seen them all.
I'm not quite sure what the draw is for me. I do marvel at the fact that many of these "rocks" are millions of years old. Millions - as in 35 to 50 million - and in my mind, that's amazing just in itself. Does my obsession with these stones have to do with the beautiful colors and patterns that are unique to each and every stone? Am I captured by the fact that these gemstones were created by the most talented of artists...Mother Nature herself? Is it the energy I feel when I touch them, hold them in my hands and work with them? They say the energy of the artist is passed through the stones - so maybe in some way I have the good fortune to touch Mother Nature when I work with them. To tell the truth, I don't think it is any one thing...I think it is all of these things that boggle the mind at times. When I hear someone jokingly say, "but Tanya, it's a pile of rocks" I cringe inside. It baffles me and then I wonder if I have rocks in my head!
| | Flourite & Aquamarine Sterling Necklace |
Luckily, I don't have anyone in my circle that really feels that way - at least not that I know of; although I have heard it said in other circles. Luckily for me, I hear back from all of you about how much you love the piece, how smashingly beautiful the gemstones are, how you get a sense of calm when you wear it; and, honestly when I read or hear those things, my heart soars. To know that we share a love for something as basic as a rock and that we enjoy beautiful jewelry that captures its essence is a wonderful thing. I do know this - when I see a rock of any type, I treasure it. It is filled with life and all things that came before - so that is the least I can do. When I started using these opaque gemstones in my jewelry designs all those years ago - I'm not quite sure I understood the true meaning behind it all. Today, I do get it. I do understand and it warms my heart to be able to share that with all of you. It's my hope that you too will come to see opulent opaque gemstones and not just a pile of rocks. Oh, and of course, the beautiful jewelry that showcases the treasures that are truly gifts to us from Mother Nature. |

Green Mist Jasper & Freshwater Pearl 3-Strand Bracelet
I bought these stones as green mist jasper in Tucson earlier in the year. This is the first chance I've had to work with them since then. Under the glass they are so interesting - they have the rolling ball look that you find in rhyolite. Lovely, really lovely. (Did I just quote Bridget Jones?) I partnered them with green baroque ringed freshwater pearls, an interesting contrast to the jasper, I think. And to spark it all, I added Czech glass in a baroque nugget shape and a highly faceted and very glittery round bead. You know me...I love the unexpected...in jewelry, that is! |

Red Aventurine & Copper Bracelet
I don't know about the healing properties of copper; but I do know that when I look at this bracelet I feel happy! Not sure if it is the natural red aventurine oval beads or the beautifully detailed copper beads; I just know that mixed with the textured copper round link chain it all comes together and makes a happy statement. Believe it or not, this bracelet can be considered a neutral and will go with most colors in your wardrobe. OK, so maybe not purple but you never know until you try. |

Mocha-Rose Freshwater Coin Pearl Sterling Bracelet
Heavy sigh - that's what you'll do when you unwrap your little gift and see this beauty for the first time. The color of the freshwater baroque coin pearls is a cross between mocha and rose - feminine but not too fluffy. While they look very brown in the image, they are a mocha-rose color. The pearls measure about 10mm and are a perfect complement for the big clear crystal quartz faceted and polished nuggets. Think of the crystal quartz nuggets as worry stones - they are so smooth - just rubbing them will take you to another place. Well, at least for a second or two. Can't wait to hear how you like it. I have been wearing mine layered with some bold textured sterling silver link bracelets from another designer. Just lovely - alone or playing with others. |
Freshwater Pearl Cross, Citrine and Peach Moonstone Bracelet
| |
It's a beautiful, petite thing - well, petite by my standards - meaning this bracelet incorporates components that are slightly smaller than those I usually use. When I saw these fancy golden-creamy freshwater pearl crosses, yes crosses, in Tucson they just jumped into my hand. The texture is similar to that found on baroque coin pearls. The citrine beads and peach moonstone beads play off the golden color of the pearls and the light beige color of the finest Czech glass pearls are a nice contrast to the lighter colored cross pearls. A center gold oval link brings all five strands together and is anchored with charms of 10mm Czech fire-polished faceted glass beads that glitter with golden hints of light. Two styles of top quality gold-plate link chain add interest - you know me...I love things that complement but are not matchy-match. Lovely, really. Soft, feminine and interesting.

Bottom line? The decision is up to you. Opulent opaque gemstones or rocks in my head? I hope you'll take some time to scout around my site and just perhaps, if you were thinking "rocks" before this; just maybe, after spending some time sharing my passion for these beauties you might come over to my side. Trust me - it's not a bad place to be - totally in awe of Mother Nature and loving the beauty found in these beautiful gemstones.
