This or that? That or this?

Do you want this red velvet cupcake or that ginger lemon cupcake? Do you want that Mayan truffle or would you prefer this extra bittersweet truffle? Do you want to date this man or that man? As with many things in life, it's just not fair that we have to choose one or the other. Well - I say pooh to that way of thinking. While I might think twice about choosing and eating two cupcakes or two truffles at one sitting today, the good news is that when it comes to jewelry I don't have to contain myself. I just exclaim "I'll take this and that, please. Oh, and maybe some of that too! Thank you very, very, very much." as I smile and pile the bracelets up my wrist or layer the necklaces one after the other around my neck. Just a side note - do you think it was intentional that I completely overlooked the dating two men option? Let's just ignore that oversight for the moment...okay? Here's a scary thought -- do you think I have watched too many seasons of The Bachelor and The Backelorette?

TRL Charm Bracelet
High School Memories

Back to the topic of jewelry. I do know that there was a time in my life when I wore very diminutive pieces of jewelry - a single pearl on a fine gold chain was my choice for my senior photo in high school. First of all, I think it's amazing that I can remember a fact that took place all those years ago! (Okay, I'll admit I cheated...I looked in my year book to boost my fading memory!) And, a single strand of basic pearls and pearl earrings was my choice for bridal jewelry. (A far cry from the bridal jewelry I design now.) My original engagement ring was a single pearl with two tiny, tiny, tiny diamonds on each side. I did layer that ring with a small, small, small diamond engagement ring and unadorned wedding band. There was one exception to the petite jewelry in my collection - a big, heavy sterling charm bracelet that was my pride and joy that told the evolving story of my

life through my teens. Luckily, I still have that piece - in fact, here it is, a little tarnished and worn; but in my mind it's still a beautiful thing. And, the one to the right is "life goes on" -- second in the series of charm bracelets. Perhaps it was that bracelet that was the underlying inspiration for the big, bold, handcrafted pieces I started crafting and designing in undergraduate school. It all just seemed to click for me and when fellow students wanted to buy the chunky pieces off my arm, I knew I was on to something.

Here are a few "layering" looks to get you going in a "this and that" direction! Honestly, the possibilities are endless -- so just get out your jewelry and have a ball.

Red Poppy Jasper, Aventurine, Smoky Quartz and Carnelian Making Friends with Strangers

Red Poppy Jasper Carnelian Bracelet

I never said you can only layer my designs with my designs -- while it would be great if you were a Tanya Lochridge Jewelry snob and only wore my stuff, I know that is totally unrealistic. Heck, I wear lots of other designers along with my things so why would I expect you to do overwise? And, I love the looks I get by doing so. Here you can see one of my favorites -- red poppy jasper, aventurine and smoky topaz of my doing layered with an early...and I mean early Joan Rivers enamel bangle.
Rainbow Hickoryite, Smoky Quartz Rope Style Bracelet Looks Great with Turquoise of Another ColorTurquoise and Rainbow Hickoryite Bracelets

More to the point of mixing my designs with the pieces from other designers. I love the look and feel of my rainbow hickoryite rope style bracelet partnered with this beauty from the Jay King Mine Finds Collection. While each bracelet is unique and stunning on its own -- together they really make an impression. I get more compliments on this combo -- it just makes it that much more fun. And, in my mind...it's just a happy look.
Crystal Quartz, Rutilated Quartz, Smoky Quartz Rope Style Bracelet Whoops it up with Bangles of a Different Designer

Smoky Quartz Rope Style Bracelet

Another glowing example of my "this and that" thinking. I love my rope style bracelets -- I know, I know...not very humble thinking; but I do love them all. For those of you R.J. Graziano fans; maybe this will give you an idea of how you can make your collection stand out from others. This combo looks mysterious -- with crystal quartz, rutilated quartz and smoky quartz -- the sensational quartz cousins take on an attitude with the dark metal of these bangles.
Boho-Goth Mixes it up with Sparkle,  Allure and a bit of Mystery...No?

Red-Black Lampwork Bracelet

It doesn't get more alluring than this combo -- one of my favorite bracelets layered with one of my favorite duos from Joan Boyce. What can I say? A bit mysterious, a bit Victorian, a whole lot interesting and impressive. This is the combo I wore on my birthday this past year -- somehow it just seemed like a party -- in an unusal kind of way. Try it...you might find yourself dancing on the table at your own celebration! But don't say I didn't warn you.
"Sea Glass" Freshwater Pearl BraceletAll these years later - I am still creating big, bold, beautiful pieces (at least I think they are all those things) and I am still stacking them up and encouraging others to do the same with their jewelry. Maybe it's because in life I just never liked to be fenced in and made to choose this or that - I always wanted this and that and, honestly, that thinking still rings true for me today. Would you look at the softest of all combinations in those two on the left. Sigh...makes my heart feel happy.
