Declare your independence...in jewelry, that is!

Chrysocolla Bead BraceletThis time of year, we're all thinking about independence -- well, maybe in the back of our minds we are always thinking about independence; but we seem to pay more attention to it in the summer months. Since you are charged and ready to celebrate America's independence, just maybe it's the perfect time to celebrate your style independence. I say, a good place to start is with some interesting indie design jewelry. I understand that it might be fun to be a bit on trend with your jewelry, but personally I dislike jewelry that looks "trendy" that will be oh-so-last-year tomorrow. As you might remember, I'm not much into wearing anything that someone else is also sporting. (Need I remind you of my issue with the Brownie uniform all those years ago?) It bugged me then and it still bugs me today when I have to choose something off of a rack that houses hundreds of identical items. Does that make sense? Well, back to my point -- one thing I am pretty sure of is that we all want to stand apart from the other 500 or so people we encounter throughout any given day...and a fun and interesting way to do that is with the jewelry we choose to wear. Seems simple enough, doesn't it. When it comes to articles of clothing, I'm a believer in choosing the most basic and best quality that I can afford; and, yes, I do buy those off the rack today. Classics...I say. Why? Classically styled clothing provides the perfect canvas for smashing "get-noticed" jewelry...like the pieces highlighted here.

Peitersite Five Strand NecklaceTo kick up your "indie jewelry design" creative session a notch or two, I've highlighted a few ideas from the new web site; and yes, I said new web site. I'm thinking you might enjoy seeing a sampling of some of the more than 200 designs that you have to choose from when shopping with me. The chances of you seeing yourself coming and going in the jewelry are pretty slim since I never make more than five of any one design. As for the brand new site, it's easy to navigate, pretty to look at, and in my mind makes for a fun way to spend some time getting some smashing new ideas. And, as a reward for those of you who actually read to the end of this tome and as a celebration of the new site of sorts, there is a special treat that you can enjoy on your shopping adventure. No, it's not a cupcake...but I think you'll like it just as much...or maybe even more since it is guilt- and sugar-free.
Green Mist Jasper and Freshwater Pearl Sterling Silver Bracelet  Green Mist Jasper Freshwater Pearl Gold Vermeil Bracelet

I bought these stones as green mist jasper in Tucson earlier in the year. This is the first chance I've had to work with them since then. Under the glass they are so interesting - they have the rolling ball look that you find in rhyolite. Lovely, really lovely. (Did I just quote Bridget Jones?) I partnered them with green baroque ringed freshwater pearls, an interesting contrast to the jasper, I think. And to spark it all, I added Czech glass in a baroque nugget shape and a highly faceted and very glittery round bead. You know me...I love the unexpected...in jewelry, that is! An adjustable sterling silver toggle clasp gives you a fit that is just right. Hey, kind of like Goldilocks. Soutache Braid Bead Czech Glass Rope Bracelet

Soutache Trim Bead Rope Bracelet
This design, because of the one-inch fabric wrapped bead, looks like you plucked it off of the table at a vintage flea market in Paris. Get ready to do the Charleston...yes, that's a dance en vogue in the 20s! The rope measures 3/8" in diameter and Czech matte and high-polished glass beads nestle in with the shimmery fabric bead and Swarovski crystals. The crocheted part of the bracelet is made up of a mix of Jablonex Czech glass black beads - some matte, some transparent, and others looking like magical hematite. They are a perfect complement to the "charms" that dance from the rope. The unique design of this bracelet means that you simply (and carefully) roll it over your hand and onto your wrist. I love these bracelets layered with metal bracelets from my jewelry box. Be creative, you can have a different look every day of the week. That's the fun part. From the Tanya Lochridge Jewelry Trunk Show Collection. You can learn more...presto!

Three strands of subtle beauty. The brown of the mother-of-pearl coin beads is so rich looking - not deep or dark in color, just really rich.  I'm thinking it has to do with the fabulous glisten on the mother-of-pearl itself. Ivory and brown swirly mother-of-pearl coins are lovely companions of the other beads. Freshwater baroque ringed pearls in a soft cocoa are the perfect complete. Of course, not to be outshined, beautiful gold vermeil round coins mimic the design of the mother-of-pearl rounds. Three strands of yummy come together with a twisted rope gold vermeil double ring toggle clasp. The double ring lets you get the perfect fit. The bracelet is not as orange as it looks in this image -- the earrings below give you an idea of the real color of the bead. Brown-Black Mother of Pearl Gold Filled Earrings

Brown-Black Mother of Pearl Earrings
Not usually one to make an earring to match a necklace or bracelet, I was surprised when something kept saying "make an earring...make an earring." Okay, so now you know that I hear voices! Anyhow, I followed the voice and this is the final piece. Very pretty, I think. Of course, you don't have to have the necklace or the bracelet for these to look pretty. In fact, sometimes, I think it's best when things stand alone. But I know there are some of you out there that like when pieces match. So here you go - simple but very pretty. Oh, I didn't notice this until I was photographing these beauties -- looks very ethnic in a soft, sophisticated way. Reminiscent of animal print? Read more...
Milky Aqua, Crystal Quartz and Freshwater Pearl Necklace

Milky Aqua, Crystal Quartz, Freshwater Pearl NecklaceSmall, yet bold. It starts with the Italian-made Bambato sterling silver chain. The chain alone is worth the price of admission. A lovely 12mm textured ring embraces a milky aquamarine 12mm polished nugget gemstone, a large faceted and polished clear crystal quartz stone and a gorgeous 10mm cream baroque freshwater pearl. Two Swarovski crystals are the icing on la torta! The chain measures 16" and the removable drop measures 1 3/8" long. By the way, the drop would look great on a cord of some type too. Molta bella collana. See all the details...
Hip Chick Sterling Silver Charm Necklace
Hip Chick Crystal Sterling Silver Necklace
Well, well, well. I am on a roll with the black cord these days. Maybe because I just want to feel hip and happening (or not); who knows? A variation of glitzy faceted and baroque-shaped clear glass beads (8mm to 12mm in size) lined up with small sterling silver charms - a fleur-de-lys for tradition; a star because you are the star in your movie; and a key to open any and all doors you encounter. Quite cute, actually. Cord is waxed cotton in black. Why would you want to look like just one of the flock when it is so easy to take something from here and then make it your own? Jewelry is fun...and I hope it makes you happy when you mix it up every day. So play away. And, if you're so inclined I would love to hear how you style it. It makes me happy to know that you are enjoying each and every piece.
