When Energize began in 1977, the U.S. relinquished the Panama Canal and Amnesty International won the Nobel Peace Prize. Star Wars broke all box office records and ABBA's "Dancing Queen" ruled the airwaves. Annie Hall swept the Academy awards while Alex Haley's Roots broke TV viewing records.
In a small Philadelphia office, Susan J. Ellis put ideas to paper with an IBM Selectric typewriter which, with its revolutionary ability to change fonts, distinguished amateurs from real businesses. Thus, Energize was born. From its inception, our company was an innovator.
Energize, Inc. grew because the volunteer management field barely existed; leaders of volunteer programs were isolated and scrounged for information. To meet their needs, Energize created volunteerism resources. Publishing led to workshops and training. Training expanded across 48 states into Canada, Ecuador, England, and eventually a dozen other countries. Books were adapted for video tapes in the 1980s, followed by a quantum leap to the Internet in 1997.
Opening our Web site was a crucial milestone. Disseminating information now knew no geographic boundaries. We began serving leaders of volunteers with more resources than ever, virtual roundtable discussions, and even online trainings. Energize pioneered the field's first electronic journal,
e-Volunteerism; we offered e-books enabling international volunteer leaders to learn from us; and recently we launched Everyone Ready®, an online volunteer management staff development plan for national organizations.
Continually re-inventing itself, Energize relentlessly pursues opportunities to empower leaders of volunteers. You can count on us to blaze the trail into the next frontier.
