Supply Chain Ethics 
In today's increasingly global economy, most companies outsource much of their manufacturing to a collaborative network of external suppliers -- what is known as the "supply chain." Recently, U.S. consumers have been inundated with headline-grabbing stories about unsafe cars, toys, food, medicine and other products emerging from extended supply chains. These stories highlight the serious risks to the health and safety of consumers and to the reputations of global companies that outsource much, if not all, of their manufacturing to an external supplier network.

Part of the problem is that while many large U.S. companies have implemented ethics and compliance programs and training to some degree, most have not extended these programs and practices to their supply chain. Many companies around the world are unaware of how effective supply chain ethics and compliance programs can help them avoid costly recalls and damage to brand and company image resulting from a supply chain ethics scandal...

Ethical Corporation magazine's pick of ethical leaders of 2008 who have done most to advance the cause of responsible business over the year feature:
 
Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and philanthropist, was selected for outlining the opportunity side of responsible business with his vision for creative capitalism.
 
Richard Lambert, director-general, Confederation of British Industry, was picked for his proactive business leadership in setting the UK climate change agenda.
 
Barack Obama, U.S. president-elect, was chosen for starting to address the world's biggest challenges in 2009.
 
Donald MacDonald, chairman, UN Principles for Responsible Investment, was selected for leading the UNPRI through the most significant year of its history.
 
Jessica Sansom, sustainability manager, Innocent Drinks, for turning the Innocent founders' commitment to sustainability into tangible results in the supply chain.
 
Howard Pearce, head of environmental finance and pension fund management, UK Environment Agency, was picked for proving that asset owners can call their fund managers to account on ethics - provided they are committed enough.
 
Chris Wille, chief of sustainable agriculture, Rainforest Alliance, was highlighted for helping to take ethical food and drink into the mainstream market.
 
Patrick Alley, director, Global Witness, was included for well-chosen campaigns on corporate complicity in human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
 
John Ruggie, UN special representative for business and human rights, was chosen for getting the business and human rights agenda back on track.
 
James Hansen, climatologist and head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, was selected for outspoken and informed criticism of government and business inaction on climate change.
