Why did Arnold Schwarzenegger cheat on Maria Shriver? Did he feel like he could? Was it because he was the boss of California and the power that comes with being in such a visible position drove him to do it? Did he also drive a big car? Nothing seems like a good enough excuse. And the excuse, "well, all men cheat" isn't true either.
Some of our inherent and often misconstrued expectations about sex and marriage include things like, "all men cheat," or "it doesn't count if it's online" or "its not really a threat to my marriage if I never plan on leaving my wife for her" or "what's the harm if its only a strip club?" or "paying for sex doesn't really mean I am having an affair" or the ultimate: "marriage kills your sex life."

 Did Weiner Text his Weiner?
Most of you know that Anthony Weiner, our Congressional Representative from New York, got caught with his pants down; literally. He texted or "sexted" photos of his penis to several people that were followers on his twitter account. This is not a surprise, is it? We hear about people sending photos of themselves every day over the internet. But you would think that the public figures - politicians, congressmen, actors - would all pay attention to the possible consequences of there actions - their behavior affects their families and their followers.
Is Weiner going to sex addiction rehab a way to avoid the fall out of his actions or does he have a real problem?
The one question to ask is "Has he tried to stop and cannot, regardless of the consequences?"
Only Anthony knows the answer to that question. If he has tried to stop and found he cannot do it on his own then he definitely needs treatment. His exhibitionism may be out of control and he really may need a place to feel safe to do the work he needs.

The sex life for couples throughout the lifespan of a relationship can include a wide range of positive integration as well as physical and emotional dysfunction. Many times working on the sex life of a couple can mean dramatic change in the rest of their lives. Issues around sex addiction, Internet and pornography use, affairs and infidelity and open marriage will be addressed. This workshop will include direct interventions to facilitate erotic recovery and a deeper, more rewarding intimacy and connection.

Studies show that more than half of all women and over sixty percent of men will cheat at some point in their marriage. This seems like a whole lot of people are having affairs.
But it depends on how you define cheating. New concepts for marriage are popping up all over. Polyamory, from the Greek, 'poly' meaning 'many' and the Latin 'amour' meaning 'love,' simply means 'many loves.' Couples are negotiating their monogamy in new ways, defining fidelity through transparency and disclosure rather than by maintaining sexual fidelity to one partner.
What does this mean? Is marriage changing to accommodate a new definition of fidelity that includes loving more then just your primary spouse or is it just a new way to have your cake and eat it, too?

It seems like in the news every day someone famous is cheating - mostly famous and powerful men cheating on their beautiful wives. From the outside, these couples look privileged and happy. They have good looking kids, fame and fortune, and a big house. So how come they can't stay faithful?
Can love and desire really work as the glue that keeps couples together? Men and women marry to express a meaningful commitment of sexual fidelity to each other, in the eyes of their family, peers, and community. As a couple's therapist, I see marriages every day that struggle to maintain this love and desire throughout a committed lifetime together.
