From the Bishop

A Relationship With the One Who Blesses
For the last several weeks we have been talking about living the blessed life. Living the blessed life means walking under the continual favor of God each and every day. However, we must fully understand that for the prophetic blessing of the Lord to be fully released in our lives, a relationship with the one who commands the blessing is necessary. Too often people want the blessings of God but fail to acknowledge the one who blesses. They want the gift but reject the giver. However we must understand that it is the Lord who blesses us. He is the one who has saved us from the worst of ourselves. Therefore we should be willing to give Him the best of ourselves.
Praise should flow from out of our hearts to Him because He has been so good to us. And God loves our praise. It even causes Him to want to bless us more. But often times we are unappreciative. We receive the blessings of God and never look back. When God blesses us and we don't pause to say thank you, it is almost as bad as stealing. This is not good; neither will it allow God's blessings to flow freely in our lives. However, when we have a personal relationship with God and understand that He is our Father, we begin to better understand the blessings of God our Father and its power in our lives.
The blessing of a father over the lives of his children is very powerful indeed. We see this illustrated in Isaac's blessing of Jacob instead of Esau. When Esau realized that his father's blessing had been given to Jacob he cried bitter tears and planned to kill his brother because he realized that everything that belonged to his father would now be bestowed upon his younger brother instead of him. When we begin to understand that our Father is the Sovereign King and we bear His name, we understand that everything that belongs to God belongs to us and we begin to act like the King's children. We think more positively, speak more positively and are willing to be a blessing to others. Living the blessed life, means walking in the continual, perpetual blessings of God which flows from generation to generation. This kind of blessing, this kind of blessed life can only occur when we are walking in genuine relationship with Him.

Unstoppable Youth
Important of Academic Achievement
Elder Rene'e A. Johnson

Academic achievement is one of the most important qualities for the successful development of our children in contemporary American society. Research has shown that students who do well in school are better able to make the transition into adulthood and to achieve occupational and economic success. Today's youth need to know a great deal more than reading, writing, and arithmetic in order to succeed. According to key business leaders in the US, students who are to succeed in 21st century America must be:
- able to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information;
- able to effectively communicate with others;
- proficient in science, mathematics, computer/technical skills, foreign languages, as well as history, geography, and global awareness;
- capable of collaboratively working in culturally diverse settings;
- leaders who see projects through to completion;
- responsible decision makers who are self-motivated and active political participants;
- ethical individuals who are committed to their families, communities, and colleagues (Nidds & McGerald, 1996, Corporate America looks critically at public education: How should we respond? [Electronic version]. Contemporary Edu., 67, 62-64).
Every child has the power to succeed in school and in life. Every parent, family member, caregiver and child can help. The question is: How can we help our children succeed? The answer comes from a combination of common sense and research about how children learn and about how to prepare them to learn.
We know, for example, that children tend to do the same things their parents do. What we say and do in our daily lives can help them to develop positive attitudes toward school and learning, as well as build confidence in themselves as learners. Showing our children that we both value education and use it in our daily lives provides them with powerful models and contributes greatly to their success in school.
Success in academics is a series of decisions and actions. It requires persistence and patience. As our children's first and most important teacher, it's important that we as parents build and keep strong ties to our children's schools. Parent involvement is considered to be a very important positive force in a child's life. When parents and families are involved in their children's schools, the children do better and have better feelings about going to school. We help our children to succeed by working and communicating frequently with teachers to make sure that they provide up dated curricula and use teaching methods that work best in helping students to learn.
Check back next month for additional tips on how to help your child succeed in school.

Your Spiritual Life
The Importance of the Modern Day Christian Family
Elder Johnny Clements

Throughout the Bible, we see a myriad of references to the family as a whole. The concept is of vital importance both physically and theologically. In Genesis 1:28 we see the first instance of the family concept being introduced when the scriptures record the following: "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." God's plan for creation was for men and women to marry and have children. A man and a woman would form a "one-flesh" union through marriage (
Genesis 2:24
), and they with their children become a family, the essential building block of human society.
As we continue to research the scriptures, we also see that family members were to look after and care for one another. When God asks Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" Cain's response is what so many of us would say today... "Am I my brother's keeper?" The implication is that, yes, Cain was expected to be Abel's keeper and vice versa. Not only was Cain's murder of his brother an offense against humanity in general, but it was especially egregious because it was the first recorded case of fratricide (murder of one's sibling).
Consider how important the family was to God when the whole of the earth was flooded. God sent Noah AND his family into the ark. So, it wasn't an individual case salvation, but a salvation for him, his wife, his sons and his sons' wives. In other words, his family was saved (Genesis 6:18). When God called Abraham out of Haran, He called him and his family (Genesis 12:4-5). The sign of the Abrahamic covenant (circumcision) was to be applied to all males within one's household, whether they were born into the family or are part of the household servant staff (Genesis 17:12-13). In other words, God's covenant with Abraham was familial, not individual.
When we are born physically, we're born into a physical family, but when we are "born again," we are born into a spiritual family. To use Pauline language, we are adopted into God's family (Romans 8:15). This spiritual family is not bound by ethnicity, gender or social standing. As Paul says, "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:26-29).
So what does the Bible say about family? The physical family is the most important building block to human society, and as such, it should be nurtured and protected. But more important than that is the new creation that God is making in Christ, which is comprised of a spiritual family, the Church, made up of all people who call upon the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. This is a family drawn "from every nation, tribe, people and language" (Revelation 7:9), and the defining characteristic of this spiritual family is love for one another: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35).
The Life's motto is Advancing the Kingdom of God One Family at a Time. As family members of the Kingdom of God, let us take up the mantle of Christ and embrace one another in true love espousing the principle that we are our brother's/sister's keeper. Become intentional in reaching out and embracing each other, for we have been called into a ministry of reconciliation.

Young Adult Life
Where are the Young Adults in the Church?
Elders Charles & Pamela Hyman
Where are the Young Adults? Studies show that Young Adults between the ages of 18-24 are leaving the church at alarming rates. As these Young Adults transition to a new phase in their lives, church becomes less relevant. Careers, college, finding a spouse, children, finding the right job, transportation, etc. begin to take priority. Many find that traditional church has become irrelevant to their lives. Is this you?
As Young Adults you desire the truth. You want relevant discipleship and biblical teachings that can be applied to daily living. You need a church with a message that translates into real meaning in your lives now. As Young Adults you can remain connected to the church.
The Young Adult Ministry (YAM) has programs to meet the needs of Young Adults. YAM is a relational ministry that offers virtual Bible Study, real discipleship, teleconferences, encouraging text messages, and fellowship to keep you connected and growing spiritually. We are to edify, equip, disciple, educate, and evangelize.
Tips to stay connected:
- Attend the worship service or participate via the live stream.
- Demonstrate God's love to others by meeting their needs and healing their hurts in the name of Jesus.
- Study God's Word daily and attend Bible Study. Remember virtual Bible Study is an option.
- Fellowship with others.
- Help to mentor and develop others to spiritual maturity.
- Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul. (Matt 26:37)

Evangelizing For Life
Elder Michael Sessoms
 Life Outreach Ministry Have you ever asked yourself, "Why should I witness?" Several reasons should come to mind. First, because Jesus commands you to: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit," (Matt. 28:19). Also, Ezek. 3:11 says, "and go to the exiles, to the sons of your people, and speak to them and tell them, whether they listen or not..." Second, you must witness because you love the unsaved (if you don't, you should). The most loving thing you can do is present the gospel in hopes of bringing others to salvation. Galatians 5:22 lists love as one of the fruits of the Spirit. It is love's nature to give. Take for example John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son..." Love gives, and if you have only a small portion of His love, you will want to give to others. Third, witness because it is a wise thing to do. Prov. 11:30 says, "...he who is wise wins souls." Now, I know I am not a very wise person. But, since God says I'll be wise to win souls, or try to, then great, let me at it. I want to be wise in God's sight. Fourth, witness to keep people out of hell. Hell is a terrifying place of utter anguish and eternal separation from God. Those who are not saved go there. Witnessing is an attempt to keep them out of hell. Fifth, witness because it pleases God and brings glory to His name. Sixth, witness so people may find the love and fellowship of God (1John 1:3), the greatest of all treasures. I can think of no greater gift than salvation. It frees the sinner from sin, it delivers the lost from damnation, and it reveals the true and living God to those who don't know Him. The angels of heaven rejoice greatly when anyone passes from judgment into salvation (Luke 15:10). Shouldn't we as Christians rejoice too? Shouldn't we weep over the lost? Shouldn't we ask the Lord of the field to send laborers into His harvest (Luke 10:2)? Certainly! The salvation of others is the goal of your efforts. The love of God is your motive. Is there anything greater? I think not.

New Dimensions Learning Center
Getting Ready to Read: Preschool Reading Skills
by Kim Hammond
Director, New Dimensions Learning Center

Before children learn to read books, they must first make sense of those "funny squiggly lines" on the pages of the book. It is important for children to understand that people read words, and the words they see are related to how we speak and what we hear.
At New Dimensions Learning Center we understand that the key components of reading readiness include: Letter recognition, Sounds of speech, Familiarity with print and books, and Phonemic awareness. Each of these areas are addressed in weekly lesson plans and through daily activities in the classroom.
Here are a few ways to interest your preschoolers in books, to help them learn skills that will lead to them becoming successful readers.
10 Tips for Parents of Pre-School Children (Age 2-4) Source: Scholastic Parent Magazine
1. Read aloud to your child every day even before they can talk, playing with the sounds and voices of the words.
2. Create a print rich home environment by having a wide variety of books available and setting family reading time.
3. Model reading and writing letting your children see you reading
4. Use grocery shopping to encourage reading by having children help you search for specific product brands
5. Cook with your child to develop literacy by reading recipes and labels together and creating a family cookbook with words and pictures
6. Explore books together by pointing to new vocabulary words and asking questions
7. Tell stories together
8. Sing and rhyme with your child
9. Write with your child providing a variety of writing materials such as chalk, markers, crayons and pencils and encouraging them to write thank you notes and cards
10. Visit the library often and tak advantage of programs they have to offer
