Back to School!

Bishop Reeves

The month of August is always known for hot and humid days and back to school for the children. However let's take this as an opportunity to start fresh.  As it is a new year for the children to start a new school year let us also take this as an opportunity to start fresh with life.  So many times we wait until the start of the calendar new year to think about fresh starts for things like finances, cleaning out that storage room or getting started with a healthy lifestyle.

Let's take this time to begin making changes in our lives we know we need to make.  As the children march off to start the school year let's take inventory of what needs to change in our lives.  After making this list sit down and decide what we can change first, then commit to making choices one by one until we see change.  Many times we never start because we feel it can't be done or it is too difficult to accomplish. Instead of pretending it will go away, how about tackling it the same way children take on the new school year -- head first with a new attitude.

Don't be afraid to face new challenges, to finish school or complete those projects that you never got around to doing. Take this opportunity to take inventory of your life and dare to make a change in an area that will make a difference.  The school of life is in, face it, acknowledge it, and then change it.

Maintaining A Personal Relationship With God

Minister Sonia Mayo

Stay In The Word

Luke 9:23-24 - Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it." )

In order to keep a relationship, you must put time into it, and invest in it in order for it to remain.  In a relationship it involves more than just yourself.  You are agreeing to join together with someone else. You can choose at anytime to stay in the relationship or not.  The choice is yours, but you must remember, if you stay, it will require some action, and some work on your part as well.

God gave us his only son as the scripture says, that we would have life. (John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life). He gave up his son, and sacrificed his only son that we might live.  So this tells us that even in a relationship we will make sacrifices.  Sacrifices cause you to be selfless because it's not about you.  You are giving up of yourself or something so that another can benefit.

Having faith is part of maintaining a relationship with God because you are giving up something as well. You are giving up your own way of thinking and trusting another to lead you.  Completely trusting God to lead you and guide you takes trust and faith.  The bible tells us in Hebrews 11:6 - "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

When we accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior, we gave up our way of thinking, our own way of doing things and entrusted God, by his spirit, to lead us and guide us into all things.

In this relationship, we must pray and talk to GOD, fellowship with him daily, worship him and read our bibles because we want to hear from him and understand what he desires for our lives.  We can tell him how much we appreciate him, how thankful we are, and just tell him what he means to us.  Another key is to fellowship with other believers and talk to others about what God has done in your life.  This will help build your faith and encourage you as well.

Remember, we must stay connected and not allow anything to come in between our relationship that is not from GOD. One thing that can separate us from God is sin. Sin can separate us from GOD, but because of his love, he allows us to come back to him and to get back into relationship with him again.

Ask God to show you if there is anything interfering with your relationship with him today.  And then, allow him to show you and be willing to make the change so that you can draw closer to him.  He's there to help you.  At times it can be so easy to drift away from our relationship when we aren't in fellowship with God and situations or circumstances arise in our lives.  We lose focus and take our eyes off of God, therefore, allowing other things to take the place of God. We forget that God is always there and promised to never leave us nor forsake us.  He is faithful! It's time to refocus and get back on track.

So if that's you today, come back into relationship with God today. God has a plan for your life and he is waiting to receive you back.

Are You Taking Care of Your Temple?

Healthcare Ministry

Immunization

3 John 1:2 states, "Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul."   So I simply ask, "Are You Taking Care of your Temple in promotion of good health?

August is National Immunization Awareness Month and school is approaching quickly.   Therefore, during the month of August several households are making physician appointments for school and/or sport physicals for children.   It is important to stress this is the month where the focus should be on all individuals in the household to ensure immunizations are current and up to date from infancy to geriatric population.

What Are Immunizations?

Immunizations are given to protect you and family members against illness and diseases.  They can also help prevent and control the spread of epidemics.   The majority are given as shots and very few are given orally.  They are also known as vaccines or vaccinations.

Sometime the vaccine does not prohibit the disease; however, the symptoms of the disease process will be much less because your immune system has made antibodies to fight the disease.

Why Should You Get Immunized?

  • Protecting your Temple
  • Decrease the spread of diseases
  • Vaccines cost less than treating of the disease process
  • Often needed for entrance into school and/or daycare, employment or traveling aboard

What Immunizations Are Recommend?

Each year the Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices (ACIP), a division within Center of Disease Control (CDC) reviews the recommended vaccinations for infants, children, preteens, teens, and adults.  ACIP collaborates with American Academy of Pediatrics and Family Physicians in order to establish guidelines.   The vaccine schedule can be found on the CDC Website at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/easy-to-read/index.html in further specific detail.

Side Effects From Immunizations?

Most side effects are very minimal but not limited to the following:

  • Redness, mild swelling  and soreness at the injection site
  • Irritability
  • Mild fever

In closing, it is imperative you discuss and review your vaccination schedule with your Primary Care Physician, Public Health Department Professional or School Nurse about the appropriate protocol established for the benefit of protecting your Temple!

Who Wants to
Be a Millionaire?

Brother Marocco Roberts

Business Affairs

The August edition of Money Magazine had an article, bound to get anyone's attention, entitled "How to Reach One Million Dollars".  This is intriguing but it could also demonstrate the realistic and difficult task of determining where we each fall in on this process.

Money magazine listed Real Estate, Stock Investing, Climbing the Ladder, Owning a Business, and Power Saving as the tracks one could use to reach the one million dollar goal.  A lot of us could easily use a number of reasons to disqualify these tracks in our own personal situation but I believe any article like this can be tailored to fit any situation.  Life presents many financial challenges but I feel like we are presented opportunities to bite into the one million dollar pie in our own way.

The article did present practical options because not everyone can own real estate, have excess money to invest in stocks, nor does everyone want to be a business owner.  We can develop what our individual "one million dollar goals" are and that they are attainable, realistic, and measurable.

Real Estate:  Review your current housing situation.  If you rent make sure you are renting a place that allows you to save up for your next home purchase or investment property.  Additionally, while rates are low and property values are low this may be a good time to purchase.  If you're a current home owner and need to better your financial situation, loan rates are low for refinances or if you have been waiting to upgrade, get sound advice and be prepared to rent or sell your current home.  Ensure you have planned out your strategy so you don't invest too much income on your home.

Stock Investing:  If you lack the disposable income or you currently have high interest consumer debt you may want to work on these areas before stock investing.  However, if you have flexibility in your budget and your debt is under control, stock investing is available.  There are many options to do this in small dollar amounts and safely to take advantage.  Don't let inexperience deter you.  Look at where you work initially to see what your employer offers.  Secondly, go to your financial institution to see what options they have.  Start small and build but start as soon as possible.

Climbing the Ladder:  I believe there can be opportunities to grow in any organization.  But you have to increase your income or lower your expenses in order to increase cash flow.  Make sure you are doing all that you can do in the job your in.  Don't become stagnant or complacent.  Always believe and work towards obtaining your next promotion or raise.  When this happens don't raise your standard of living to match your income instead use the increase to help achieve the other steps/tracks.  This can be difficult, be ready for a firm commitment.

Owning a business:  In this area you have to be creative.  There are many ways to achieve this and not every business venture will be a winner and not everyone is designed to be a business owner.  The main principal; create multiple streams of income.  Invest the right amount, in something that interests you , and clearly understand the time commitment, product/service, and consumer demand.

Power Saving:  Set a percent you can save, do it regularly, increase it when you can, start where you are, and look for ways to trim expenses to meet your savings goal.  No gimmicks just desire and commitment to continuous savings no matter what.

Why Am I Not Losing Weight?

Brother John Butler

We all know of someone or perhaps even ourselves who is working out on a regular basis, exercising food portion control and making healthy food choices, but the weight is just not coming off.  Why hasn't my mid-section decreased instead of increasing? Why hasn't the scale moved?  If you're asking these questions, the answer is quite simple.  The very thing we feel is good for us may in fact not be as good for us as we think, especially as we see the scale tipping on the greater side. I believe that one of our key kryptonites is BREAD!

Basket of Bread

We've been taught that in order to stay our healthy best, we must ovoid, minimize or stay away from refined carbohydrates (carbs).  Refined carbs are defined as those such as white bre

ad, white rice, white pasta, bake goods or anything that represent a refined sugar and has no Vitamin B value.  However, we've also been instructed that it's okay to replace these refined carbs with wheat grains, barley and rye.  So now we're making our sandwiches with 100% whole grain or rye or asking the s

erver to bring whole wheat bread and perhaps even light butter.

Okay my friends; this is where this article gets interesting, because the very thing we've been instructed to replace the refined stuff with is in fact just as bad when it comes to your quest to keep off the pounds, " it is called gluten".   Did you know that gluten makes up our wheat grain, barley and rye products (unless you buy them gluten-free)?  GLUTEN is a protein found in most foods that enhances the taste of our food.  This protein is found in our wheat products, rye and barley.  It thickens our soups and sauces, it adds the texture to our breads (white & wheat), and it stretches the pizza dough so that our pizza is not only tasty, but shapely as well.  Although, gluten will add more health issues to those individuals suffering from Coeliac disease, "an abnormal immune reaction to partially digested gliadin within the digestive system (Reference:  Gluten/Ask.com Encyclopedia).  It will also hinder proper weight loss where our diets are concerned.

My suggestion is to modify your diet to include no bread (wheat or white), or switch to a gluten-free bread lifestyle.  As for myself, I find gluten free bread to be an acquired taste, however, my quest is to find a gluten free bread that also taste good.  Good luck!!
