From the Bishop
A FATHER'S MEMORY OF HIS FATHER
With a dad like mine, I didn't stand a chance!
I remember the first time I saw my father cry. It shook me to the core. Up until then, I had never seen my strong first sergeant father shed a tear. Yet here he was crying in front of me, his high school age son. I really looked up to my father. Even though I realized by now that he was human, in my eyes, he was still my hero. He began to tell me that he had heard a few things about my activities both at school and in the community. You see, I had made a stupid choice and my father had just found out what I had done and was confronting me about it. As I sat there with him, my heart was racing. I just knew that I was going to get it now...grounded forever...I'll never be allowed to drive the car again...or maybe worse, I might have to see the dentist in the morning. Yet my father did none of those things. Instead, as we sat there together, he cried and said that he was sorry that he had let me down. He confessed that he had spent too much time on the road and too much time working extra jobs. Now I was really confused. I wanted to say something but I was too afraid because I had never experienced anything like this with my father. He said "your uncle told me what you have done and I am sorry that I have not given you the confidence in me that you felt you had to go to him for help in your deepest hour of concern". I sat there thinking, how could I break my father's heart? With a dad like mine, I didn't stand a chance.
Today I'm a grown man, a husband, father and grandfather. My dad is in heaven now. I can no longer hear his voice on the phone, saying, "I'm fine" and asking me, "how are you and the children", and always reminding me, "remember to take care of your family and don't you do anything to embarrass our family name". My reply always was, "Yes Sir I will". Almost every day of my life I'm faced with temptation to lie, cheat, steal and lust, but with a dad like mine, I still don't stand a chance! You see my father left a legacy that family must come first. He was a deacon and always prayed for his family. When my son was a baby and had to have surgery, my dad dropped everything, left his job the moment he got the word, picked up my mother and drove until he got to the hospital where we were. He would not leave until he knew that my son and I were doing well. With a dad like mine I didn't stand a chance.
My prayer for you is that you will get into the habit of praying for your children, calling each one by name every day. I pray that you will make sure that they understand that they are important to you, even if you haven't always gotten it just right. What you will be providing for your children, is exactly what my father provided for me. You see the reason I never stood a chance was because my father prayed for me and set a standard for manhood and fatherhood that is with me to this day.
With a dad like mine, I didn't stand a chance!
Faithfully Yours,
Bishop E.V. Reeves

Education Your Life
Spiritual Education Doesn't Take a Summer Vacation
Pastor Matrica Ware, Education Ministry Director
Summer's school break is fast approaching, and our minds are turning to the vacations we have planned for this summer and the many deserved breaks from work, school or whatever your regular routine may be. I pray you have a safe and restful summer. BUT just a reminder that we will be offering at least one discipleship class every 10 weeks during the summer. So be sure to look for the advertisements and postings about these upcoming classes.
Our Bible Study focus on Tuesday nights at 7:00pm is "Slaying your Giants in 2012". This is study is in line with our theme for this year and the teaching is directly from the Word of God on Spiritual Warfare. Our lessons so far have covered the individual pieces of armor listed in Ephesians 6, communion, prayer, baptism of the Holy Spirit and several other topics and how they are used as weapons in this warfare. If you missed any of these teachings, pick up a copy of the audio teachings from the Media Support Ministry. We will continue our teaching on Spiritual Warfare through the month of July.
The Education Ministry at New Life exists for the benefit of our congregation, and Bishop directs most of the classes we teach as he receives inspiration from the Holy Spirit. Some classes are taught as a result of members making it known that they would like more information on a particular Biblical topic. If there is a Biblical topic you would like to have more training on, don't hesitate to make it known to the Education Ministry. You can contact me e-mail at education@thelifedc.org, or by phone at (703) 490-7155.
We encourage you and your family to become a regular participant of the Tuesday night Bible Study and the many Discipleship classes taught here at The Life!

Your Spiritual Life
Bless Me Dad, Bless Me...
By Pastor Ron Jones, Executive Pastor
Reprint

During this time of the year I'm often reminded of Jacob and the blessing he bestowed upon his children. In particular the blessings that were bestowed upon Joseph ring out loud and clear. The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren...Gen 49:2.
Give a blessing to your children. Find their good qualities, recognize their potential and verbalize that to them. Say "I Love You". Support their dreams as you would have wanted your dreams and visions supported. Direct them and inspire them to soar with the eagles. As you place your hands upon their little heads, say these few words that I wish MY FATHER had said, "May God shine His countenance upon you..."
The difference in the children who receive a father's blessing are success and failure, victory and defeat, knowing who you are or searching all your life for your identity. I'm told that in the absence of a blessing some children believe they are cursed. Dad, you have the power to reverse the curse.Death and Life are in the power of the tongue, and those that love it will eat of its fruit...Prov 18:21.
Believe in the importance of your impact and influence over your children -- just because you are their Dad. Divorce should not negate your obligation to pass on a blessing to your children. Create a legacy of blessing in your family. Your children need to hear you proclaim a blessing upon their life.
You may be reading this newsletter and never received a blessing from your Father.....It's not too late....You have a Heavenly Daddy who loves you and wishes to bless you...As a matter of fact kneel down right now and receive your blessing...."Son/Daughter, I know the thoughts that I think towards you, thoughts of peace and not evil, I now bless you and enlarge your territory. My hand shall be upon you and I will keep you from evil, that you may no longer cause pain, now rise up and walk into your destiny..." AMEN.

Restoring Lives Community Development Corporation
Restoring Lives Summer Jam!
By Kylisa Harris, Executive Director
A few months ago Restoring Lives began planning for our annual Community Festival! The day will be filled with lots of fun for our youth, plenty of great entertainment, food, vendors, give a ways and community outreach. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 11th on the grounds of Garfield High School!
On that day, Restoring Lives will be conducting its annual back to school distribution. Our goal is to distribute 500 book bags filled with school supplies to local area students! Last year, we adopted several area schools, Bel Air Elementary, Neabsco Elementary, Godwin Middle and Garfield High School. With your support, we were able to meet the requests for assistance that came from those schools and supplied them with new book bags filled with school supplies! The program was so successful, other local area schools have called asking to be considered for donations this year. We want to be a blessing but we need your help!
Restoring Lives is now collecting school supplies, especially book bags! Over the next several weeks, we are hosting a school supply drive! We need you to begin bringing college rule paper, BOOK BAGS, pens, pencils, index cards, crayons, single subject notebooks, glue, scissors, and more BOOK BAGS!! Donations can be dropped off on Sundays and during the week between the hours of 9am and 6pm.
We are expecting over 1000 people to attend the festival! It's a perfect opportunity to showcase your business to the community! Vendor tables are currently available on a first come, first serve basis for only $25! Please contact Restoring Lives at rlcdc@rlcdc.org for more information on how you can reserve your spot today!
Please be sure to visit www.rlcdc.org to stay informed on what you're doing in the community!
Blessings!

Staying Fit for Life

Summertime Fun & Safety
It's summertime! Time to hit the road, the beaches, the pool, the backyard and anywhere else there's fun in the sun. But don't let a mishap dampen your fun. Here are some tips to stay safe.
Heat & Water
- To prevent heat stress and heat stroke keep yourself and children well-hydrated, take frequent breaks when playing outside, and watch for symptoms such as thirst, cramps, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and fever. Never leave a child or let them play in a hot car.
- Be careful of getting burned on metal slides or other hot playground equipment.
- Apply sunscreen or sunblock to you and your children.
- Childproof your pool by enclosing it in a fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate.
- Supervise your children around the pool, even if they know how to swim.
- Have children who don't know how to swim wear a life vest instead of "floaties" when they are in the pool.
- Always have your child wear a life vest when on a lake or river, even if they know how to swim.
- Take your child to swimming lessons to learn to swim.
Other Areas
- Keep younger children away from lawn mowers.
- Use insect repellents when necessary.
- Do a daily tick check if your children have been playing outdoors, especially in or near wooded areas.
- Make sure your children have appropriate protective gear when they ride a bicycle, skateboard, or scooter.
- Don't eat food that has been left out for more than an hour at barbecues and family picnics, which can cause food poisoning.
Although not a safety danger, it's important to remember that time off from school and work also means more time to become inactive and eat more junk food. Be sure to stay active and eat healthy all summer long to stay fit for life! Segments take from Dr. Vincent Iannelli, M.D., "Hidden Summer Dangers"

Father's Day Poem
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it...
Dad
