encoreThe Spa at Encore in Las Vegas, Nevada

A Spa Review

 by Julie Register

The Spa at Encore"Opulent!" "Beautiful!" "Breathtaking!" These are just a few of the words people have used to describe The Spa at Encore to me over the past few years. The 61,000 square-foot spa has 51 treatment rooms, which include 14 garden suites that can accommodate two people. I finally had an opportunity to see and experience it for myself. I were handing out awards for personal favorites in elements of spa décor, The Spa at Encore would win three. Read about my experience at The Spa at Encore in Las Vegas

art2Two Springs on my Driving Tour of the Historic Springs of the Virginias - Salt Sulphur Springs and Red Sulphur Springs in West Virginia
A Spa Review
by Julie Register
Salt Sulphur SpringsWe came upon Salt Sulphur Springs about 3 miles south of Union, WV. Thanks to stone construction, many buildings still stand. The Salt Sulphur Springs Hotel, a store, church, bath house, and spring house remain. It is the largest pre-Civil War stone building complex in West Virginia. Salt Sulphur Springs is no longer a resort. At the time of our visit, it was a private residence. There were three types of springs that flowed here: sulphur, sweet and iodine. We were told that one of the previous owners, in an attempt to increase the flow of the water, dynamited the springs. Sadly, the effect was the opposite of what they had hoped. The springs dried up. Read More.

Red Sulphur SpringsRed Sulphur Springs, built in 1832, once hosted Francis Scott Key and a future Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Roger Tanay and his ailing wife among others. Red Sulphur was one of the largest and most popular resorts in the area. Not a trace remains except the spring itself and its rock foundation. We couldn't even find that. Read More.

These are two of the nine historic springs I visited on my Driving Tour of the Historic Springs of the Virginias.

    Explaining how stillness in meditation refers not to a rigid and frozen body but to a quality of mind, Will Johnson examines the Buddha's own words at the core of the Satipatthana Sutta: "As you breathe in, breathe in through the whole body; as you breathe out, breathe out through the whole body"--an instruction often overlooked in the majority of Buddhist schools. Exploring the Buddha's complete series of steps for deepening awareness of the breath, he shows how to invite natural, responsive movement back into the posture of meditation by extending breath awareness beyond the nostrils, lungs, and abdomen to the entire body--a practice that unifies the breath, body, and mind into a single shared phenomenon.

    Everyday Meditation
    We all know that meditation helps to lower stress and can even prevent disease. It has no negative side effects and no cost, and requires only a few minutes a day. So why is it so challenging to begin and sustain? Tobin Blake offers innovative ways to start meditating and to invigorate an existing practice. He begins with the basics - how to sit, how long to practice, and how to use various techniques, such as zazen, mantra, and visualization - and then covers topics such as dealing with thoughts, restlessness, and overcoming the deeper obstacles to meditation. Written with our modern challenges in mind, including electronic distractions, stress, and the constant sense of overwhelm, Everyday Meditation will help you:
    * make your mind an ally
    * undo restlessness and anxiety
    * build spiritual relationships
    * heal your body
    * overcome depression and anxiety
    * find balance, meaning, and life purpose

    by Wolf D. Storl and Rosemary Gladstar
    Traditional herbalists or wise women were not only good botanists or pharmacologists; they were also shamanic practitioners and keepers of occult knowledge about the powerful properties of plants. Traveling back to the healing arts of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, The Herbal Lore of Wise Women and Wortcunners takes readers deep into this world, through the leechcraft of heathen society and witches' herb bundles to the cloister gardens of the Middle Ages. It also examines herbal medicine today in the traditional Chinese apothecary, the Indian ayurvedic system, homeopathy, and Native American medicine. Balancing the mystical with the practical, author Wolf Storl explains how to become an herbalist, from collecting material to distilling and administering medicines. He includes authoritative advice on herb gardening, as well as a holistic inventory of plants used for purposes both benign and malign, from herbs for cooking, healing, beauty, and body care to psychedelic plants, witches' salves for opening alternative realities, and poisonous herbs that can induce madness or cause death. Storl also describes traditional "women's plants" and their uses: dyeing cloth, spinning and weaving, or whipping up love potions. The Herbal Lore of Wise Women and Wortcunners is written for professional and amateur herbalists as well as gardeners, urban homesteaders, and plantspeople interested in these rich ancient traditions.
    Also avaialble in Kindle Edition.
