October Newsletter
Dear Knitters and Crocheters,
 Knitters-October
Just a quick note to update you about our scarf drive for the troops!  They're starting to roll in now and we have about a thousand hats and scarves all neatly folded and ready to be put into care packages beginning November 20th.  The photo on the right is of a knitting group that delivered some of their lovely scarves to the armory last week.

As delighted as I am to have received many of your hand-made items now, I implore you to please continue with this project until the end of November, so we will have plenty of items to put into our December care packages too!

And special thanks to those who are taking a little extra time to include a note and contact address with each of your items.  It makes them even more special!!
Please try your hardest to stick as close to our scarf measurement guidelines as possible.  I've got a beautiful blue and white scarf in front of me now that is about 70" long with 5" of fringe on each end!  I'll do my best to get it into a care package but it's just too darn big! (Whatever we can't send will be donated to veterans' groups).  5-7" across and no more than 50" long are the safest measurements for our purposes.

Deadline for scarves and hats is December 10th.  Please send all items to:
Army National Guard Armory / Operation Gratitude/California
17330 Victory Blvd.
Van Nuys, CA  91406
ATTN: Charlie Othold/SCARVES
Financial Donations are still very much needed for the $11 it costs to ship each care package.  You may donate by a check, payable to and mail to:
Operation Gratitude
16444 Refugio Road
Encino, CA  91436
or donate online here: DONATE (and it's all tax-deductible)!
You may have heard the wonderful news that Operation Gratitude is hosting the Vietnam Memorial Wall Exhibit next weekend.  During that four day event we will have a knitting table set up for anyone interested in making scarves for the troops--or learning how to knit a scarf for the troops!

If you live in the L.A. area and would like to join us and sit at our table for a few hours over the weekend it would be greatly appreciated!  Your participation will also give you the opportunity to view this beautiful Veterans Traveling Wall honoring America's fallen heroes.  The event is free and open to the public, so please help spread the word!

The hours we need to "man" the knitting table are as follows:
    Thursday, October 15th: 12 - 6 p.m.
    Friday, October 16th:       9 - 5
    Saturday, October 17th:  11 - 6
    Sunday, October 18th:    11 - 5

For more information about the traveling wall go to www.avtt.org or visit the Operation Gratitude website; Special Events link

Please let me know if you'd like to sign up for a time by emailing me at sharhoward39@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your consideration.  We'd love to see you there!
Again, I thank each one of you all for your devotion and support of our troops--and for helping Operation Gratitude meet it's goal of sending a hand-made item to each member of our military deployed overseas!

With love and appreciation,

Sharon
