We've meant to go up north all summer and never made the time. Getting ready, packing the car and fighting traffic - all to spend a couple nights in a tent with two kids and a labrador fresh out of the lake! It's no wonder that we put if off. But a couple weeks ago we remembered the "Goods from the Woods" marketplace up in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and if you don't actually plan for a trip up north you don't have to do any of the fretting. So we packed the car and off we went!

We made it into Grand Rapids in time for lunch at
Brewed Awakenings Coffeehouse. The owners, Joan Foster and John Ostroot have a stated mission to be a café where you can eat everyday and be healthy. They believe that the way they do business will strengthen their community and even farther reaching ecosystems. This bright and welcoming café features local and organic ingredients on a menu of creative soups and sandwiches and you will find art hanging on the walls by local artists. When you go, make sure you have the soup of the day. We had a great Cuban Black Bean Soup, just one of 55 original recipes Joan has developed over the years. You can get your hands on a few of those recipes in the upcoming book from Renewing the Countryside titled "Minnesota Homegrown Cookbook" available spring 2008.

Goods from the Woods takes place about a half mile away from the café in the Civic Center in Grand Rapids. We didn't really know what to expect other than we were probably going to see a few wooden bowls and a bent willow chair or two. But actually there was a wide array of amazing products. From traditional Swedish carving knives and delicate pine needle baskets to beautiful hand built cedar canoes. We have Goods from the Woods to thank for getting us started on our Christmas list this year. We bought a few very interesting beeswax candles with leaves imbedded in the wax and and a gorgeous translucent, amber colored drum from Joyce LaPorte. According to Ms. LaPorte she uses Autumn deer hides because they can be stretched tightly for use in sweat lodge ceremonies.  It nearly rings when you hit it.

If you haven't started your christmas shopping yet, I highly recommend buying local this year.  And next year, make sure you have Goods from the Woods on your calendar

Creating Value-Added Communities Across Minnesota
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Renewing the Countryside, Green Routes' parent organization, has a new and exciting training opportunity available for communities in Minnesota.   We will be conducting a new, community-based training called, Creating a Value-Added Community (CVAC) to communities across Minnesota this fall and winter.
Creating a Value-Added Community (CVAC) was designed to help communities develop strategies for poverty reduction, while planning for economic development.
CVAC's program materials are modeled after business planning guides and manuals; they focus on reducing poverty, creating wealth, and building community capacity.  They introduce and define community development concepts, and provide worksheets and tools to help users adapt these concepts to local needs.
The CVAC process is aimed at helping rural communities find practical ways to build capacity and fuel their economic engines toward a vibrant local economy.  The purpose of the CVAC process is to help community residents understand that addressing poverty issues is good business for the entire community.  Guiding the community's economic future through the appropriate use of value-added capacities enhances the economic and social well-being of the community.
Contact Christy James at christy@rtcinfo.org or 612-963-0467 for more information about how your community can participate in the Creating a Value-Added Community training.
Ongoing reports of greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming and high gas prices are leading many people to pursue alternative means of transportation in their daily lives.  When traveling, this can be much more difficult as buses and bicycles are not feasible ways to get to many tourism destinations.  If your travel plans necessitate the use of a car, van, or truck, consider making the move to one of these alternative fuels:
1)    Ethanol - Widely produced from corn, ethanol can be made from many biological sources such as sugar cane, wheat, or potatoes. Switchgrass and other perennial crops are also showing promise for converting to ethanol.  E85 is the most common and accessible form of ethanol and can be used in the selection of flex-fuel cars on the market today.  A list of E85 compatible vehicles can be found at http://alternativefuels.about.com/od/ethanole85/a/2007ffvhub.htm
2)    Hybrids - Using a combination of traditional fuel and battery power, hybrid cars can also be a great way to reduce your emmissions.  Many car companies, such as Toyota, Honda, and Ford, have added hybrid vehicles in recent years.  Rental companies Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, and Avis-Budget have all recently announced the addition of hybrids to their fleets, so it's getting easier to use this option when traveling.
3)    Biodiesel - Biodiesel can be used in its pure form (B100) or combined with petroleum diesel at different percentages.  Minnesota was the first state to mandate a percentage (2%) of biodiesel in all diesel sold in the state starting in 2005.  For information on using biodiesel in your car or purchasing a biodiesel car, check out http://www.biodieselamerica.org/.
Have Fun! Make a Difference! Take the Green Routes Travel Pledge!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Green Routes Newsletter BannerIf you didn't sign up last time - we are continuing to collect Travel Pledges. We're serious about growing and sustaining our rural economy. We want to support small businesses and communities that have made a commitment to be more environmentally and socially responsible while building their local economy. Join 1,000 green travelers who pledge to visit at least five Green Routes businesses this summer.

Here's how the pledge works.
1) Send us an email with "I pledge" in the subject line. In the body of the email, include your name, preferred email address, and your mailing address (optional).

2) Then, next time you travel in the state, use the Green Routes website or one of the Green Routes maps to find fun and unique places to eat, play, sleep, shop and learn.

3) Keep track of the places you visit, and then once you've visited five places, send us an email with the names of the places you've visited and the dates you were there.

4) As an incentive to for you to keep track of your visits, those who submit their list will be entered in a drawing for a $50.00 gift certificate that can be used at any of the Green Routes businesses.

Happy travels,

- Brett, Christy, Deborah, Jan, John, Lindsay, Lisa and Margaret
