Valentine's Day is next Monday - are you ready to spoil your sweetheart? We have a great selection of books on display on the front table by the register. Small gift books, books of love letters, stories of love gone wrong - there is something for everyone! Grab a Valentine card either funny or romantic, for kids or for Grandma, and something from the gift aisle and you are good to go.

An article in the upcoming Publisher's Weekly magazine focuses on bookstores with kids working in the family store. One of the featured families is our very own Kohli family. It is so great to work in a family bookstore, with local owners who are here all the time.

Jane Kohuth, one of our former children's booksellers, is now also a published author! We will be celebrating the launch of her new early readers book, Ducks Go Vroom! this Saturday, February 12th at 2 pm. There will be snacks, a fun bookmark craft for kids, and Jane is happy to sign her book to your special Valentine. Perfect for the lovable little ducks in your life!

Betty's lunchtime book group met yesterday to discuss The Tender Bar by J. R. Moehringer (Betty reviewed it below). Much of the lively discussion revolved around the differences of a memoir as opposed to an autobiography. The next meeting will take place here in the ubc on Tuesday, March 8th when they will discuss The Lotus Eaters  by Tatjana Soli. All are welcome to join anytime.

In our last newsletter, our top books of 2010 bookmark was the link you clicked on the most! We all want to know which books everyone is reading. If you missed it last time, you can still download the list.

And on a final note, yesterday was Red Sox "Truck Day" where the Red Sox equipment departed Fenway Park for the 1,480-mile trip to the club's Spring Training home in Fort Myers, Florida. A sure sign that spring is just around the corner. In the meantime, enjoy the musings of our in-house Red Sox poet, Barry Hoberman.

books we recommend

What is our favorite thing to do - besides reading, of course? Telling everyone how much we loved the book we just read! This is one of the best parts of being a bookseller.  Here are our picks for cozy, snowy day reading:

Major Pettigrew's Last StandMajor Pettigrew's Last Stand
by Helen Simonson

I am a big fan of British society dramas and have really enjoyed watching Downton Abbey (which sadly, is an original screenplay by Julian Fellowes and NOT based on a book) so I finally picked up Helen Simonson's Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. A modern British comedy of manners where the widowed Major Pettigrew loves his little village, but isn't sure he approves of the changes that are in the works. He has developed a friendship with the local shopkeeper, and they share their appreciation for Kipling and good tea. This warm, funny book will keep you reading and is even better with a good cup of tea by your side.

The Death InstinctThe Death Instinct
by Jed Rubenfeld

The story begins with a bombing on Wall Street, suspects are terrorists. Sound familiar? Only thing is, the year is 1920. Based on fact, this historical mystery takes you from New York City to Paris to Prague, with believable characters and brilliant writing. I thoroughly enjoyed following the seemingly disconnected pieces of the story as it all comes together in a satisfying ending.

The Tender BarThe Tender Bar
by J. R. Moehringer

A book I have often heard about, The Tender Bar was every bit as good as had been reported. J.R. Moehringer's memoir about growing up fatherless in Manhasset, Long Island is more than a coming of age story. It is a wonderful amalgam of unusual characters, dysfunctional family life, striving and setbacks, and a love affair with writing. Guided by his single mother, JR ricochets between her ambitions for him and the influence of Dickens the bar that dominates the story. The writing is gorgeous and the plight of a boy trying to define himself is a compelling one. This book is a wonderful way to spend a few wintry afternoons.

HothouseHothouse
by
Chris Lynch

The brilliant, heartbreaking story of a teenage boy coming to grips with the truth about his firefighter father's death. After Russell's father and his best friend die fighting a house fire, the firefighting brotherhood and the greater community honor them as heroes. But when evidence turns up that there may be more to the story, the two men are vilified as much as they were praised. How Russell and his friend DJ deal with their own grief and the town's reaction makes a powerful story about fathers and sons, friendship, and growing up.
Ages 12 and up.
