7 readings in 7 days kicks off with Brunonia Barry tonight at 7pm at the Wellesley Free Library - yowza! Add 2 amazing kids events at the end of the week and we have a full plate! Be sure to check out the amazing lineup to the right. We look forward to seeing you.

For the graduate or teacher, we have put together some great book recommendations for both children and adults. We have plenty of gifts, both big and small, to reward that special someone at the end of the school year. Plus, signed books always make great teacher gifts. If you need suggestions, just ask us. That's why we are here!

If you missed the very entertaining and informative event with Lexington-based author and environmental journalist, Meg Muckenhoupt, Union Park Press is sponsoring a walking tour to celebrate the publication of Boston's Gardens & Green Spaces. They have planned three wonderful 2-hour tours through Boston's ever-expanding green network. For more information, we have a link to the flyer HERE.

My friend Marijke has been emailing me reviews of her favorite books. You can find her review for The BFG a little further down the newsletter. If you have a favorite book you would like to share - adult or kids - please email me at kym@wellesleybooksmith.com.

The Irresistible Henry HosueThe Irrestible Henry House by Lisa Grunwald
Believe it or not, starting at Cornell in 1919 there were various university "practice houses" where college students learned homemaking and took turns mothering real babies supplied by local orphanages. Henry House was one of those "practice babies" brought up by multiple "mothers". This is his story and how his unusual upbringing affected his later life, unable to make attachments to any one person. It is fascinating - and irresistible!

InnocentInnocent by Scott Turow
20 years is a long time to wait for a sequel. And you may worry that you won't even remember the original. So not the case. You immediately remember Rusty Sabich and Tommy Molto, and are introduced to Rusty's son. Rusty is now a judge in the appelate court, and finds himself accused of murdering his wife. Make sure you have some time to spare because you won't want to put it down once you start!

Tess of the d'Urberville'sTess of the d' Urberville's by Thomas Hardy
Enjoying a brief reading break, I thought I'd reach back to the old masters and read Tess of the D'Urberville's by Thomas Hardy. Hardy's writing is beautiful, dense and descriptive. Emotion is embedded in every page and the characters, Tess, Angel, and the rest are so fully developed. But even beyond the literary value, the story is gripping and a thrill to read or reread.

The BFGThe BFG by Roald Dahl
The BFG is a heart warming tale by Roald Dahl. It is about a little girl named Sophie. Sophie is an English orphan. One night she is kidnapped by the BFG (the big friendly giant) and taken to the land of the giants. The giants eat humans, but the not the BFG. He is kind. Together the BFG and Sophie set out to stop the ghastly giants. Read the book to find out what happens. I rate this book 5 stars.

In the gift aisle We all know that you can't plan a trip without taking a good book. Our gift buyer, Alexa has everything else you need! Fill & Fly pump bottles that are carry-on approved, Travel First Aid kit, Red Eye pack (eyemask, earplugs, gum, Burt's Bees lip balm & lotion) cool Passport covers, luggage locks and tags. One of my favorites is the point-it language book. dog of the week
  • puzzle
Rescue dog Puzzle came to our store last week  with her owner Susannah Charleson, to talk about her riveting book Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search and Rescue Dog .  A commercial pilot and professor,  Susannah goes on missions and trained Puzzle during her "off time"!  A passionate advocate of search-and-rescue teams, Susannah explores some of the science of rescue dogs,  the training, the talents of different types of rescue dogs, the certification trials, and, of course, moving stories of actual rescues.  We thank Puzzle for finding lost children, saving disaster victims, and even recovering debris from the Challenger disaster!

when you buy a book at wellesley booksmith...
1 You help support local author programs
We bring authors to the store, library, and your local schools at no charge, supporting authors and encouraging readers.

2 You embrace what makes us unique
We choose the books and gift items we carry based on our first-hand knowledge of your needs and your interests.  We carry a wider array of products because we look for those unique titles and gift items you won't find elsewhere. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you're helping to maintain the diversity and distinctive flavor of your community.

3 You nurture our community
We know you, you know us!  Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and donating to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains.  Spending locally makes sure your tax dollars are put to work right here.  Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and often provide better wages and benefits than chains do.

4 You help the environment
Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers, which are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.  Buying from a local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging.

Thank you for supporting your community independent bookstore!

And don't forget to visit our sister store Brookline Booksmith when you are in the city!

Sincerely,
