October was a whirlwind month for events here at Wellesley Booksmith! A huge thank you to all who attended these recent events. It was so great to see familiar faces both here and at the library. We couldn't do it without you! If this was your first time at one of our events, welcome and we are so happy you came.
November will be another month full of fabulous events starting with artist Gareth Hinds this Friday at 6:00 pm here in the Used Book Cellar. We are so excited about this event with Gareth. Both kids and adults will enjoy Gareth's highly visual presentation about the process by which he creates a graphic novel. At this event he'll talk about his recent adaptations of two of Shakespeare's plays, King Lear and The Merchant of Venice, AND give us a sneak peek at his forthcoming graphic novel of The Odyssey, to be published by Candlewick Press in the Fall of 2010. He'll also sign books and accept your words of congratulations on becoming the newest addition to the extended Booksmith family! (He married our store's Children's Book Buyer, Alison Morris, on September 12th of this year.) Learn more about Gareth by checking out his website, www.garethhinds.com.
Make sure and check out the full listing of our events in the Upcoming Events box to the right.
Did you know we have a in-store book club? They meet on the first Tuesday of every month at noon. The next meeting will be Tuesday, December 1st and the book is Rabbit Run by John Updike. Munch your food while we chew on ideas with Betty Sudarsky, unparalleled bookseller and experienced book club leader. Bring your own lunch, head downstairs to the Used Book Cellar, and talk with your mouth full! |

| 10 years of favorite books |
|
| Since this is our 10th Anniversary year, we put together a display in the store of our booksellers' favorite titles from the last 10 years. We've asked our customers for their favorites too and here are a few of them. If you'd liked to tell us about a favorite book that you've read over the last 10 years, email us at newsletter@wellesleybooksmith.com or come into the store. Sharing great titles is one of the things we love about bookselling!

At Large and At Small by Ann Fadiman
I love Anne Fadiman. Witty, erudite modern essays that make you laugh and think and revel in the wonders of the English language. I also love Ex Libris, but that might be slightly before the 10 year cut off. I keep both of these on my bedside table and reread sections often. | |

The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan
Did you know there is a revolution going on in your kitchen? It is chemical warfare, no less dangerous than anything a terrorist could plan. Yet it is organized and employed by long standing, well known corporations. I don't want to rant, but Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame warned us years ago.
Michael Pollan brings the gory details right into our kitchens. Mr. Pollan explores three main areas: corn, grass and the forest. It seems every convenience food item we eat contains corn. Our DNA is largely corn. He then takes us into the gory world of meat. It makes you think twice about what goes on your grill, or certainly into your children. Please be forewarned on the mental images portrayed in this section.
After I read this book, I did change some grocery shopping habits. Our red meat comes from a local farm full of happy, 100% grass fed cattle. I try to buy organic from as close to my home as possible.Funny, now that I think back, may grandfather may have discussed this very topic. He had the most delicious garden.

Maggie (named after Margaret Thatcher) is a cute, googly-tooth Schnauzer mix. She is also lucky enough to have been rescued by her owner. I love seeing happy, affectionate rescue dogs in the store. Rebecca just loves Maggie!
